PRE-GAME RANT

So it turns out my powers of prediction are extremely weak. Every sign pointed to the Oilers dying to the hands of the Wild, without much of a fight put up. In reality, it didn’t take much of a fight to kick the crap out of them on the scoreboard. I have to ask.. what the hell was up with Zach Parise kicking at Corey Potter (blade first)? It will go unpunished, I’m sure, but I don’t think it should be. Of course if it was Matt Cooke doing the kicking, he’d be banned from hockey for life. For Parise… it won’t even be reviewed. It all happened pretty quick and wasn’t a big kick or anything, but in light of the Karlsson incident, you’d think the NHL would step in. Anyways, judge for yourself. Anyways, I thought Parise deserved to have his ass beat, but somehow it turned into the Wild pushing Potter around after that. On a later shift, both Mike Rupp and Zenon Konopka went after him. I’m not sure why.. I missed a lot of this one, so I’m not sure if something happened before, or what. But really, this is sign number 1 that MacTavish needs some tougher players (that can play) in the lineup. I think he knows this too. He pointed to the Habs as an example to follow, and I think he recognized Brandon Prust as a good example of what to look for. We do have Mike Brown for that though, and he fills that role pretty well.. but I think we could use some guys like a prime Ethan Moreau (meaning, Moreau when he was a good player) and a Jason Smith type.

On to to tonight’s game… I’m pulling for a win, but I feel that I need to predict an awful loss, due to superstition (since my 3-0 Wild prediction last night turned into a 6-1 Oilers win). So uhm… 5-0 Vancouver.

PRE-GAME RANT

Roberto would like you to know that his contract sucks. That’s why he wasn’t traded. Good point, and I’m in full agreement. Pretty honest words from Lou though. He’s endeared himself to fans though lately with his @strombone1 account on Twitter. He’s a pretty funny guy and that’s probably the only thing keeping him somewhat sane these days, amidst all the pressure. Not sure if he starts or if it will be Schneider. His team will have to look past that negativity though.

The Oilers.. wow.. smoked Calgary good last night. It’s about time. It’s nice for our team to not only shut up Flames fans in our building, but to overtake their building with cheers for Oilers goals. The Flames are in for some really painful times though. This is just the start. I want to caution that we beat up on a really bad team though. But I also want to give some credit, cause in the past, the Oilers wouldn’t have showed up at all for that kind of game. I find they typically put their best effort in vs. the tougher teams and coast by against the bottom feeders. They started off looking like that team, early on, when Calgary got a 2-0. However, the Oilers completely turned things around. After the first goal, it was like someone hit them with a defibrillator.

Paajarvi might miss this one. If he does, expect Smyth to play in his place, and Lander to be called up to center line 4. New guy Jerred Smithson is not ready to play yet, as his wife is ready to have a baby, if she hasn’t yet. Other than that, I don’t suspect there will be any lineup changes. I’d really like to see Fistric or Peckham in for the more physical opponents, but doesn’t look like that will happen.

PRE-GAME RANT

Yet another good test for the Oilers, tonight… vs. one of their biggest rivals, the Vancouver Canucks. I know several of you displaced fans are tired of being beaten up by the locals, so hopefully the Oilers will win this one and win it handily in regulation so you can shut those fockers up! I have many relatives in B.C., and I wouldn’t mind to do some rare gloating! Plus, a win tonight could push us just 1 point behind 8th place (depending on outcomes from other teams).

The Oilers are continuing to play Whitney. I think he’s been doing fairly well, so he could win ice time on merit alone. But I think it makes as much sense that they want to showcase him as much as possible for a deal. There are just 4 days left until the 2013 NHL trade deadline. It will likely be a snoozer like last year.

Go OIL!

PRE-GAME RANT

Some early updates on this one… Magnus Paajarvi has been recalled. Eric Belanger was put on the injured reserve list after hurting his foot blocking a shot. Doesn’t sound like anything serious. But given our luck, he might need to have his foot amputated.

Shawn Horcoff is also expected to be in the lineup for this one.. hopefully that is the case. He was absent from the last couple games with neck strain suffered on a hit from Shane Doan.

The Canucks are starting to show more of their “true” form… back on top of the standings, based on some fine play from Roberto “We don’t need you here anymore.. wait, yes we do” Luongo. Bleh.

Update @ 10:50am… sounds like Whitney will sit this one out in favor of Corey Potter. Hate to say it, but this is good. Also, word is Eric Belanger is wearing a walking boot now for his foot.

PRE-GAME RANT

I’m liking that I don’t have to choose a new GDT pic for this one, since the Oil start the 2012/13 season the same way they finished the 2011/12 season.. playing Vancouver. Hopefully this time the Oilers will have more jump in their step. The Cancuks got SMOKED last night 7-3 by the Anaheim Ducks, and, believe it or not, 5 of those goals were on Cory Schneider.

Who here is NOT excited to see Justin Schultz and Nail Yakupov play their first NHL game? Hell, I’m excited to see all the existing Oilers, never mind the new ones. But I’m also anxious to see Mark Fistric play his first game with us too. Too bad it won’t be game 1 though, as according to Dan Tencer, he’s scratched for game 1, and Corey Potter is in. Strange choice. I like Corey Potter, but I think you go with your muscle in the divisional games. Is Fistric not ready to play yet?

Hopefully this will be a good one, as this has a lot of promise.
