2013 WJHC – Game 3 Summary – Canada vs. USA

Malcolm Subban makes a big save against Team USA

Canada wins 2-1 over the USA. Canada built up an early 2-0 lead in this one, in the first period. They exchanged chances with the Americans up until the 3rd period where the US came on strong in spite of getting into serious penalty trouble. Canada had a brief 5-on-3 followed up by a full 2 minute 5-on-3, but couldn’t capitalize.

This game was Malcolm Subban’s best game we’ve seen thus far, answering questions about whether he could rise to the question or not. He did make one near fatal error though. On a delayed penalty in which he was a bit mysteriously called on a trip, Subban raised his hands in disgust just before a shot was coming in from the point. Luckily, our boy Nugent-Hopkins came to the rescue, sliding across on one knee to block the shot, or that likely would have went right in (thumbs down to him though for taking a dumb penalty in the final 2 minutes of the game while protecting a 1 goal lead though). Credit also to Scott Harrington for his unheralded defensive game. He came up big near the end of the game to stop the Americans from banging in a loose puck. That all said, Subban played quite fantastically throughout the game, including a huge kick save (and a beauty) in the 3rd. He earned player of the game for this one. John Gibson also stood out in the other net and also was given player of the game.

Overall, I thought the Canadians played a decent game and managed to stay out of penalty trouble for the most part. This game was a lot less of an offensive showcase, and was more of a tight defensive game / goaltending battle… I would have thought the Americans would beat us in a game like that. It didn’t help much that the Canadian powerplay was quite limp throughout the game. They had their chances, but couldn’t finish.

Next game is vs. Team Russia tomorrow, a 7:00AM MST start. I’m looking forward to that one cause I can actually watch the full game live. I work tomorrow, but I’ll have the game on for sure. I stayed up for two periods this AM for the Canada / USA game, but that was about all I could do. Canada will get a boost as J.C. Lipon (1 game) and Boone Jenner (3 games) return from their suspensions. I’m thinking about putting up an actual GDT for that one since there is a chance people will be up to watch that one.

Today’s game is a semifinal between the United States and Canada. No matter how much I build this one up, I can’t build it up enough. Last year’s final between the USA and Canada hurt. It sucked to see Canada lose on their own soil to our neighbors to the south. There is a rivalry between us both.. I don’t have to explain it. Everyone knows about it. Last year, Canadian goaltending was very suspect. This year, it is much of the same. It’s a game I’m worried about, for sure. I’m not sure if the Canadians can do it. I wasn’t sure if the Canadians could beat the Swedes either, so I omitted the prediction there. They ended up losing. Well, since I’m a superstitious guy when it comes to hockey, I’m making a prediction in this one.. Continue reading 'WJHC 2011 GDT – Canada 4, USA 1 – Semi-final – 2011-01-03 @ 5:30PM MST – TSN'»

PRE-GAME RANT

Well I’m not too sure if anyone cares about this game. It should pretty much come and go without anyone even noticing really. Just another old game between Canada and the United States. Just a game for a piece of ductile metal. Meaningless.

Obviously I’m being facetious here. This is one of those moments in hockey history that could be remembered for a while. How it is remembered is yet to be known. These games really have been fantastic for Canada, and it’s my hope that one of the end points of the games will be fantastic as well.

I’m sure no American or Canadian hockey fan needs to be reminded what happened the last time these two teams met, on February 21st, but for those that don’t know, it was of course a 5-3 win for the United States. Canadians consider hockey to be “our game”. No one is allowed to be better at it than us, and at least on that day, the U.S. was. So everyone donning that red jersey Sunday should have a lot to prove. I expect a pretty damn good show from Canada, and what remains to be seen for me is who in the Red, White and Blue are going to be doing the same. I expect a pretty epic game.

No prediction for today… I don’t want to jinx anything. I have a lot of hope for Canada, but let’s just see how it pans out. Hopefully both teams deliver an entertaining package. That’s all either countries fans can ask!

PRE-GAME RANT

Well here it is, the game we’ve been waiting for. No, not the gold, but who doesn’t love a good old battle between the US and Canada? This should be Canada’s toughest battle of this Olympics so far, having easily walked over Norway in the first game. The second game probably didn’t go as anyone had planned. It was a win, but Canada struggled to put the puck in the net behind Hiller. Despite outshooting the Swiss by a 2-to-1 ratio, Canada needed extra time and the shootout to lock the win (3-2). Sidney Crosby was the lone goal scorer in the shootout (on his second attempt – after the first 3 shooters for each team, there is no limitation on the number of times a single player can shoot), and Brodeur sealed the win by whipping the glove out on a great save on a shot by Martin Plüss.
