Mike Brown traded to SJS for 4th rounder in 2014

By , October 21, 2013 9:55 pm

The Edmonton Oilers traded Mike Brown to the San Jose Sharks for a 4th round pick in 2014. That puts the Oilers at 48 pro contracts now (limit is 50), giving them some wiggle room in a deal. You have to figure there is something else coming in the near future. At the very least, it’s good to have flexibility. I liked the kind of player Mike Brown is, but unfortunately that type of guy just isn’t useful on a hockey club. This is addition by subtraction. The Oilers recalled Tyler Pitlick today, and also Ben Eager. There is some reports that they also recalled Tyler Fedun, as he shows on the AHL transaction list as being recalled and is on the Oilers active roster page currently. Mysterious.

Closing the book on Shawn Horcoff …

Thank you for the loyal service..

Thank you for the loyal service..

It is with a mixture of relief and sadness that I report that Shawn Horcoff has been traded. He’s always been a favorite of mine. He definitely had his struggles. Fans were overly critical of him, ever since he got the big pay day. I understand why they didn’t like the contract… I won’t go much into it or defend it. No matter what, I don’t think anyone could question his heart. He was undoubtedly a good leader, and his presence will be missed.

With the Oilers buying out Eric Belanger, and moving Horcoff, there will be a big hole at center now. I would welcome several players here in the #2 center spot: Stephen Weiss, Valteri Filppula, … freshly bought out Mikhail Grabovski. Correction, freshly waived for the purpose of buyout Mikhail Grabovski. So I ask, if we’re interested in him, should we do it by a waiver claim? Is his high contract TOO high to do that? Or is it too risky to let the free agent gods handle it? I would strongly consider the waiver claim. He is a bit overpaid, but not terribly bad. I think a Gagner-Grabovski-Yakupov line could be good to watch. It might need a guy like Paajarvi in place of Gagner for some defensive stability. Not sure how I feel about that idea.

Anyways, it’s the end of another captaincy (#14 I believe)… who’s next? I say without a doubt it will be Taylor Hall.

Details on the Horcoff trade are still being worked out. Original report was that it was for a pick, but according to Darren Dreger, more than one piece is involved.

EDIT: the deal is Shawn Horcoff for 2016 7th Rounder, plus defenseman Philip Larsen. Really, Horcoff’s contract is such an albatross that it is a miracle we got a return for him and didn’t need to eat any salary. Nice.

Pre Draft Trade Thoughts…

Is the #1 pick available? Should it be?

Is the #1 pick available? Should it be?

The rumor mill has been busy lately, as it always is at this time, with suggestions that the Oilers will be moving the #1 overall pick. So I thought it would be great to take a look at every team in the NHL and consider their assets… NHLers, and prospects … and consider which players we should be asking about. I mostly focused on the defense, and a bit on goaltenders and centermen, as I think those are our biggest needs. Some of these teams wouldn’t be able to offer much for our #1 pick and some teams would need more than our #1 pick for their assets, so I’ve also considered a list of tradeable players for the Oilers. This time of the year, it’s always fun to talk about trades.. but often they’re pretty unrealistic. I don’t mention any specific deals here though (save for a couple). Please feel free to make some suggestions in the comment section for guys we should be after, or trades we could make.

Tom Gilbert Traded to the Wild for Nick Schultz

By , February 27, 2012 11:05 am

Oilers have just traded Tom Gilbert for Nick Schultz

Steve-O’s initial thoughts: Terrible trade. Absolutely terrible. Although I know nothing about Schultz.

Steve-O more rational thoughts 3 hours later: I still think we gave away a better D man. At best we broke even.

Racki’s info:
Here’s what I’ve been able to dig up about Nick Schultz:
Scouting Report
Assets

Has excellent speed, mobility and grit for the blue-line position. Plays with poise and is capable of logging a lot of minutes. Always gives his all and leads by example.

Flaws

Lacks the physicality to truly dominate offensive forwards. Doesn’t play with a lot of confidence in the offensive zone at the NHL level.

Career Potential

Solid defensive defenseman.

He’s 6’1, 200 lbs and shoots left (sucks losing a righty in Gilbert.. especially one that excels at moving the puck) and 29 years old.

$3.5M cap hit until end of 2013-14, so the Oilers save $500k in salary.

This is what the experts are calling a “hockey trade”. Tom Gilbert returns to his home of Minnesota.

Schultz averaged 19:35 in TOI this year so far with the Wild, with what looks like 2nd line pairing on the PP and top pairing on the PK.

Canadiens trade Jaro Spacek to Canes for Tomas Kaberle

The Montreal Canadiens have traded Jaroslav Spacek to the Carolina Hurricanes for Tomas Kaberle. I’m thinking that Kaberle revives his career a bit under Montreal.
