Today’s game is a quarterfinal between Switzerland and Canada. The Swiss finished 3rd in Pool A (2W, 2L), while Canada finished 2nd in Pool B (3W, 1OTL). Canada pounded the Swiss in the pre-competition round by 8-0. I suspect this will be a lot closer of a game. But I do think the Canadians will still dominate this one. Switzerland’s wins came against Germany and Slovakia, which aren’t exactly powerhouse teams, however they gave the USA a run for their money in a 2-1 loss on December 31, 2010.

Prediction: 6-2 Canada

Well here it is.. this is something I look forward to every year. My Christmas isn’t actually Christmas and opening presents, but the World Junior Hockey Championships. I absolutely love this tournament. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better hockey to be seen at any time during the year than this tournament. These kids lay it all on the line during this tourney. It’s fast, it’s physical, and it’s just all around entertaining, serious hockey. The kind of hockey that would upset the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Swiss have some returnees from last year, of course, with the biggest names being goaltender Benjamin Conz (who wooed many with some unorthodox, yet strong goaltending) and Nino Niederreiter, who wasn’t even on most peoples’ radars before the tournament but quickly became a household name afterwords by his incredible work ethic. Conz is undrafted and will look to make a case for that, but Niederreiter Continue reading 'WJHC 2011 GDT – Canada 8, Switzerland 0 – Pre-Comp 1 – 2010-12-20 @ 5:00PM MST – TSN2'»

Preliminary Round Game 2
Date: Feb 18 @ 5:30 PM MST
TV: CTV
Canada: 1-0-0
Switzerland: 0-1-0

PRE-GAME RANT

Game two for Canada sees them face Jonas Hiller and the Swiss. The Swiss have been known, in recent years anyways, for their tight defensive play. I expect a lower scoring game tonight than there was in Canada’s first game in which they won 8-0 vs. Norway. The Swiss lost their first game 3-1 to the Americans on Tuesday.

I’m going to say this one is a 5-1 final for Canada. The Canadians just have far too strong a team that even the tightest of defenses will struggle with. It should be a pretty good game to watch. Players of interest on the Swiss this year are goaltender Jonas Hiller, and defensemen Mark Streit (of the New York Islanders) and Anaheim Ducks prospect / 2009 1st-rounder Luca Sbisa.

Canada defeats Swiss, USA defeats Sweden setting up Canada vs. USA final in WJHC

Oldie but a goodie.

Oldie but a goodie.

In semifinal action, Canada defeated Switzerland by a score of 6-1 today while USA beat the Swedes 5-2. For Oilers prospects, Jordan Eberle had one goal in the Canada game, while Anton Lander was the lone scorer for Sweden with both goals.

This sets up an epic battle Tuesday between the USA and Canada. The last time the two faced in the gold medal was in 2004 in Helsinki. The Americans won gold by a score of 4 to 3. Needless to say, this will be Canada’s toughest battle of the tournament. The two teams have already faced each other. The Canadians managed to come back from a 4-2 lead and win it 5-4 in the shootout in part to some more heroics by Jordan Eberle. Hopefully we can pay them dirty Yankees back for the 2004 loss and win this one. Sixpeat!

The Swedes will face the Swiss Tuesday afternoon at 2:00PM MST for the Bronze medal.

Here are the current point totals for Oilers prospects:

PRE-GAME RANT

That picture is of Nino Niederreiter, the Swiss forward who has been garnering a fair bit of attention this tourney, and the player that helped the Swiss to the unthinkable – a victory over the Russians. Get used to that face, because we’re going to see a fair bit of him in Sunday’s game.

This isn’t the first meeting between the two teams this tournament. Canada beat the Swiss 6-0 the first time they met, in the preliminary round. But even so, I hope the Canadians take them seriously. Look for a more inspired game from the Swiss and perhaps a tighter game.

I expect the Canadians will win this one though. My prediction is 7-2. I think the Swiss have a strong, hardworking, blue-collar team. But the Canadian powerplay is just unbelievable right now. It is currently at 43.3%. The Swiss are going to have to play a very disciplined hockey game if they hope to take down the Canadians. Of course that PP stat is inflated, having unloaded on a couple of lesser teams. But if I’m coaching another team in this tourney, I don’t want to face that powerplay.
