PRE-GAME RANT

I’m putting this up early so I don’t have to remember in the morning (which isn’t my best time), plus since I’ve missed a couple MMS’s hopefully this pic will make up for it.

Well, this is the half way point in the season. Yet another season of rebuilding, but if you listen to Tencer we’ve only been rebuilding since 2010 so I guess it’s not so bad, right? In good news, the Oilers had a pretty good showing defense wise in the world juniors (4 D played, Kelfbom won gold and was named a tourney all-star; plus Marincin, Musil and Gernat). Makes the future look a little bright, however we all know with D they don’t progress in a straight line. Just look at Smid. Started playing with us in 06/07, and just now looks like a player that is a difference maker. Continue reading 'Oilers 1, Stars 4 – Game 41 – 2012-01-07 @ 12:00 PM MST – SNETW'»

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers are fresh off their best win in recent years, with a 9-2 victory over the Blackhawks. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. I can’t see them following that up tonight, but hopefully they can at least make a game of it. This team IS good and has some superb offensive weapons. They just needed a blowout like that to get some confidence back. A hattrick for Taylor Hall hopefully opens up the floodgates for him – that was much needed.

One guy that didn’t score a point at all that night was Magnus Paajarvi. His struggles continue. It’s upsetting because I know he’s in the quicksand right now. Nothing he does seems to improve things for him. The chances have been there at times. I think he’ll get it, but I hate seeing players struggle.. for their sake. Anyways, he will sit out again tonight. It might be worth considering sending him to Oklahoma City for a bit to find some confidence. Ben Eager will also sit. Replacing these two will be Lennart Petrell and Darcy Hordichuk. Hordichuk hasn’t won over everyone, I know, but before he was hurt many fans here were loving him. So I hope he can get back to that form again.

Khabibulin gets the start again tonight. It seems that he is our official starter from here on out, until he slips long term.

I’ll be missing this one tonight, unfortunately, but I’ll PVR it. Hoping that it’s a good one.

Prediction 4-3 Stars

NHL Operating Incomes Analysis

By , September 15, 2011 2:05 pm
Where all the Dallas Stars revenue went...

Where all the Dallas Stars revenue went...

So this article was inspired by some talk over at the Putting On The Foil Forum about financial problems some teams in the NHL are having… namely the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars. I thought I’d dig a little deeper, knowing that there is information from Forbes about teams’ operating incomes available to the general public. Why are these teams in such hardship when it seems like they’ve always done well?

Stastical uber analysis by Moi

OK, Click the link for a pic of an Excel doc (maybe I’ll upload this thing to Google Docs later) I made based on Forbes NHL Team Valuation reports.

First off… an important note: Take this with a grain of salt! That is because these numbers might not be 100% accurate. Plus the values are a bit off already in that it (as they state at Forbes) they don’t include “interest, taxes, amortization, depreciation”. Also keep in mind we don’t have last year’s numbers yet. However, I think they still give us an overview to see what teams have been succeeding and which have been keeping their head above water.

Dallas… a recent article stated that they were in financial hardship and are selling the team and declaring bankruptcy (the ownership group is). Well, if you look at the Forbes numbers, it looks like this team is still doing quite well. So I kind of wonder if the problems the Stars’ ownership group is having is because of the Stars or if it’s because of their other businesses/teams that they own, etc. Anyone with insight on that, feel free to share.

Anyways, I thought I’d use this info to point out that keeping this league afloat (and this should be obvious) are profits by Toronto, Montreal, New York, and to lesser extents Detroit and Vancouver, DALLAS, Edmonton and Chicago.

Your bottom feeders are:
Phoenix, Florida, New York Islanders, Columbus, Carolina, Atlanta, Nashville, Buffalo, St. Louis, Washington (a team that is losing money despite Ovechkin being there).

Here’s a sorted version of that table I did up above.

Note: I am in no way a dollars and “sense” (sic) guy. So I may be severely oversimplifying things here. But it just seems to me like the Dallas Stars aren’t really a bankrupt team so much as the ownership group is bankrupt for other reasons. The Devils seem to have been losing money up until recently, although I’d say once you figure out all the missing numbers (taxes, etc.) they’ve probably lost money every year since 2006.

Where would this league be now without Toronto, Montreal and New York though?

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers have been playing some pretty poor hockey lately, which triggered a meeting between the team and General Manager Steve Tambellini. Look for a post on that shortly. I think it will work tonight.. I hope they dress MacIntyre, as I think he has a score to settle, if what I caught in the last Oil Change was any indication. Kreuger was holding him back like a pit bull on a leash, saying that “we play them again soon”. As luck (or lack of) would have it, MacIntyre did not get dressed for the follow up game.

Prediction: a fight for MacIntyre (please be dressed) and a spirited 4-3 win for the home team.

PRE-GAME RANT

Happy birthday to Wayne, happy birthday to Wayne, happy birthday dear Wayner, happy birthday to you. Happy 50th big guy!

Now that’s out of the way, let’s see what we’re in for tonight. Dallas Stars again…

There have been some chippy games recently between the two clubs, so look for a spirited affair tonight. Adding to the Stars’ angst they’ve been outscored 14-5 in their last two games, so hopefully the goaltending woes continue and the Oil have a big game before going into the break.

Back to Wayne, share your thoughts in the comments on some fond memories of the glory days. A few stick in my mind that weren’t all that glorious. I remember a line brawl in one game when Wayne was on the ice. Everyone had a dance partner and Wayne’s opponent respectfully pinned him to the ice and just held him there while everyone else started the lawn mowers. Another big moment in Wayne memories happened post trade and involved another Oiler. Kelly Buchberger laid Wayne out with a vicious elbow while Gretzky was with the Blues. Someone has to post some happier memories below.
