Oilers re-sign Yann Danis (1-year) and Ryan Smyth (2yr @ $2.25M/year)
I think the Smyth contract is good. We know he’s at the tail end of his career, but in the early half of the year he looked really good. After December, he slowed way down. But there are signs he can still play. He was a very good penalty killer for us last year. I think that alone is worth the $2.25M, but I suspect we’ll get a vet line (either with Horcoff and Hemsky, or Horcoff and Jones) and they’ll pitch in around 50 goals combined.
Ralph Krueger apparently talked to Smyth and also let him know he’ll have a different role this year. I.e., he won’t be a top six player.. he’ll be a support player, playing “a more versatile role rather than top six minutes.” (per Joanne Ireland)
Edit: Also now add Darcy Hordichuk to the mix.. 1 year deal.

Tambi was a busy man today...
OK, really, today wasn’t THAT good. It was good though, and I was surprised how much the Edmonton Oilers got done in a single day. This is the same crew of people that snailed their way through last off-season and did much to improve the farm team, but very little to improve the big club with Colin Fraser, Jim Vandermeer and Kurtis Foster being the “big” additions.
So, let’s summarize: Continue reading 'And on the 1st day, he created the heavens, then called it an off-season…'»

Draft...draught...get it... (focus on the beer guys)
Thought I’d throw up a post for discussion today about the draft. I’ll also update this with Oilers specific news during the day (or a hate filled rant of Tambellini).
Today is the day that drafting the Nuge/or Larsson/Trade with Florida/acquire Smyth happens.
Update 5:24pm – Bob McKenzie I think confirmed Smyth to the Oilers for Brule, plus the Oilers picked the Nuge @ #1 and put a sexy new home jersey on him.
Update 7:42pm – Oilers pick Klefbom with the 19th pick
Discuss…
Also, chat added.

As per TSN.
A deal certainly isn’t imminent and won’t necessarily be an easy transaction for either the Los Angeles Kings or Oilers to close, but sources tell TSN the 35-year-old left winger has indicated to the Kings his preference would be to play next season in Edmonton if a trade can be worked out.
Important details: 1 year remaining, 4.5 mil owed, 6.25 cap
Me personally would love to see him back, but I wouldn’t give up much for a 35 year old salary dump (even though he does contribute a bunch of offense) with only 1 year remaining.
