PRE-GAME RANT

Well, so much for win and you’re in… Nikolai Khabibulin plays again tonight, despite the loss on Wednesday. I didn’t think he played though, and the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch seems to figure we’re showcasing him. Sounds good to me.

Andy Sutton draws in tonight (thank god!). There are rumors flying about now that the Oilers are trying to re-sign him to a 1-year deal (also, thank God). That is definitely fine by me. I hope they manage to get that done. A 1-year deal would be perfect. I’m not sure who comes out of the line up. It sounds like he’ll be replacing Cam Barker tonight, who hasn’t looked very good at all on his return (and for me, I don’t think he’s looked all that great all year… some flashes of a good player here and there though).

PRE-GAME RANT

Well, it’s officially a winter wonderland here now. The hockey season can start for real now. What Oilers team will we see tonight? The one that has been near perfect in the early goings? Or the one that has seemingly forgotten what they were doing during that time. The long rodeo road trip is over, finally time for a home game… let’s hope that the Oilers get things back on track starting now. Taylor Hall has been suffering without a goal for 8 games now. Perhaps with Tom Renney being able to get the match up he wants, Hall might start scoring again. I’m not sure if that really is even the problem, or if he’s just suffering from a plain old sophomore jinx. At any rate, I hope he snaps out of it soon, as this team really needs him to score. On the flip side, this team really needs Nikolai Khabibulin to making those impossible saves again, as he’s looked more mortal as of late.

Tonight Sam Gagner will watch from the press box. Anton Lander draws back in on the fourth line, with Ben Eager and Lennart Petrell playing book-ends. Eric Belanger bumps back up to line 3, with Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan Jones manning the wings. The rest of the line up remains untouched.

Prediction: I’m starting to think I’m bad luck. I’ll just keep it quiet tonight and we’ll see what happens.

There are few teams in the NHL that can compete with the Oilers for bottom feeder position, and this afternoon the Oilers will face one of them in the Senators. The Senators are on a worse recent skid than the Oilers, as a matter of fact. They’ve dropped their last 5 and are winless in their last 11, and their last win was nearly a month ago (1 day shy). The Oilers are no slouches in the losing department either this year, and are 2-7-1 in their last 10. This match-up could have draft pick implications… OK, I’m just building this one up needlessly… this is probably not going to be an exciting one, but I do expect an Oilers win.

Prediction: 6-1 Oilers (where did that come from?)

I always thought the games versus the East were cakewalks for us, but nothing has gone right this year. The Oilers have looked better than the team that was blown out 8-2 by the Rangers, however. So I think they’ll make it close. I’ll say 4-3 Senators. Gerber gets the start tonight. Sorry not a lot to talk about in today’s GDT.

PRE-GAME RANT

Well, the Oilers are coming off 2 wins in a row now. After watching them plod heartlessly through January, it’s nice to see some effort out of everyone right now. I’d like to believe that there has been a big morale and culture shift, however really there shouldn’t be much reason to believe that, as the only guy of the vets from 06 to go was Staios. However, there are a lot of new faces in the line-ups these days, so there is a possibility that this is the case. Even Horcoff, everyone’s favorite goat, has stepped his game up lately. I think, personally, I’d bet that with the trade deadline gone, the guys can relax a fair bit more and play loose. The Senators have won only 1 game in their last 5. So they’ll be hoping to bounce back against a team that is normally considered the free spot on the big card. Not tonight though!

Prediction: 3-1 Oilers
