GDT - Edmonton Oilers at San Jose Sharks
The Oilers are coming off a heartbreaker vs. the Penguins on Thursday. After getting a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period, the Oilers struggled to contain the Staal line. Staal assisted on all 3 goals for the Penguins, who went on to win the game 3-2. The Oilers now sit at 1-12-1 in their last 14. Their last win was vs. Toronto back on December 30th. The Olympic torch was in Rexall place on Thursday night, and Quinn helped limp it down there. It must have been hard as hell not to burn the mother(bleep)er down, the way the season is going.
As for the Sharks, they sit at the top of the heap, tied for 1st with Chicago. The Sharks lost the last one in a shootout versus the Bruins, but are 7-2-1 in their last 10. This is the 3rd meeting of the two teams this season, and second of January. The Sharks won both games. The first game was on November 27th, and was a 5-4 loss, and the second was January 2nd, a 4-1 loss.
I think given the way the Oilers last game went, they could come out with a good game, however I don’t think afternoon games are their forte these days. So, prediction time…
Heart says: 4-3 Oilers
Brain says: 6-3 Sharks

GDT - Edmonton Oilers at San Jose Sharks
Well, the Oilers head into a new year, and they’ll be thankful to put 2009 behind them. The playoff chance calculator has them at a 0.4% chance of making the playoffs. And as Dustin Penner would remind us, Lloyd Christmas once said “so you’re saying there’s a chance!!” (for those that missed it: Penner on not making Canada: “Like my friend Lloyd Christmas said, what was all this 1 in a million talk?”).
Anyways, the Oilers are coming off a 2-1 loss vs. the Flames yesterday in which Jeff Deslauriers stood on his head to keep the score from being completely out of hand (I’m sure many of you skipped this one, and you were smart to). They’ve lost 8 of their last 9 now. The Sharks, meanwhile have won 7 straight. So hi, uhm.. free spot on the bingo card.
Here are my predictions:
Brain says: Sharks 6, Oilers 2
Sharks 5, Oilers 3 Oilers forfeit before this one starts Continue reading 'GDT – Edmonton Oilers at San Jose Sharks – Jan 2, 2010 @ 8:00 PM – CBC – Game 42'»
GDT - Edmonton Oilers vs. San Jose Sharks
Well here it is folks, the moment we’ve been waiting for – Heatley’s first game in Edmonton since he nixed the trade. The Oilers are coming off a poor showing versus the Kings on Wednesday – a 3-1 loss on home ice. The Sharks are also coming off a loss, having been hammered 7-2 by the Chicago Blackhawks in Marian Hossa’s 2009/10 season debut.
Since the failed trade, Dustin Penner has shown great success this season with a surprising 26 points in 25 games. Ladislav Smid has also been fantastic this year, having grown into a very reliable two-way defenseman. Andrew Cogliano has struggled a bit this season, but he also hasn’t been given much of a chance, spending most of the season in the bottom six. Meanwhile, Dany Heatley has 33 points in 26 games, with Joe Thornton serving up fat pucks on a platter for him on the top line. Whether the Oilers are better off without Heatley remains to be seen, but so far I’d say I’m pretty happy that deal never happened.
So two teams coming off horrible losses.. who bounces back? The way the Oilers have playing, my guess would be the sharks. But I’m hoping that the trade-bait players (Heatley excluded) want to prove that the trade should not have been made to begin with. Is that going to be enough for the Oil, sans-Hemsky? Sheldon Souray in a rare non-GQ pose.
UPDATE: Check the Comrie rumor post for more information around Comrie. This rumor is sounding less like rumor and more like fact now, folks. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program…. the San Jose rumors:
Here’s a little something to get things going… people have been talking that SJ’s trades today freed up cash for Heatley. Darren Dreger’s twitter says “talks have gone cold” between San Jose and Ottawa, however. Anyone revisiting the old Souray to San Jose rumor again? Continue reading 'Unfounded rumor time…'»
