PRE-GAME RANT

Every game from this point onward is huge. The Edmonton Oilers are trending upwards now, and that is perfect timing for them (well, I guess perfect timing is the start of the season, as long as you continue the trend..). The Oilers are 3-0-1 in their last 4, after getting smoked by the Predators. They had their revenge with a narrow 3-2 win in a rematch the last game. The Sharks, on the other hand, appear to be trending downward. They’ve only won one of their last 7 (with two OTL in that frame). This is an opportunity the Oilers have to seize. They’ve historically been the team that other teams look forward too when they are slumping. The Oilers have always been slump busters. That has to change. The sharks have 1 regulation win and 1 shootout win versus the Oilers this season so far. A win tonight will put the Oilers on equal ground as far as points, but no matter what the outcome, the Oilers have already lost out on a potential tie breaker of record between the two clubs. Every point from here on out is going to count, as the Oilers are going to be in a dog fight all the way. Most of the teams are on the upswing, with very few teams faltering like the Sharks.

There’s been some trade/contract talk lately. Much of it revolves around whether or not we should trade Ryan Whitney. I’m still saying yes to that, if the return is good. Ryan Whitney is hot right now, and his value will never be higher. I believe that it isn’t our blue that is the straw that stirs the drink on our powerplay, even though it does help. Can we make due with Potter there? Doubtful.. but why not Jeff Petry?? This is a guy with a decent offensive skillset, but for whatever reason he’s being heavily relied on defensively (albeit he does well in that regard). Perhaps you could reduce his PK time and increase his PP time to make up for the loss of Whitney. Right now, Petry is our most used PKer. That is great and speaks highly of Krueger’s trust in him, but I think you should be able to dial back those minutes in favor of Marc Fistric or Nick Schultz, and then feed Petry more PP ice time. Just my 2 cents. On the flip side though, there is a very good argument that we need to keep Whitney around for a playoff push. I will just remind people how difficult it was to watch Ryan Whitney here the last couple of years. He could revert to that. Just saying… if we can get something good for him, do it. If not, well, no loss for us.

Awesome article up on the Edmonton Sun here. Basically it talks about the Oilers finding their new formula for success and how they think they can stick to it and win games. Talk is cheap, but I think they can do it. Drinking game tip: Take 1 shot for every time the word “identity” is used in the article (that’s 14 shots).

Go OIL!!!!

UPDATE: Nuge is out. That presumably should mean that Hartikainen is in now. As far as who slots in at center, it’s anyone’s guess. It could be Petrell, who has played some C. It could be Hall, who we would love to make a C long term. It could be Mike Brown because according to Bob Stauffer he’s played some C (Mike Brown would beg to differ, however).. just kidding on that one. It should be either Hall or Petrell. I would guess Hall moves over, Horcoff drops to play with Jones/Eberle and Hartikainen gets the glorious opportunity to play with Hall and Hemsky.

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers play the second game in a back-to-back set of games tonight and they face the undefeated Sharks for it. The Sharks have been steamrolling teams in part due to elevated performances by Marleau and Thornton. They are killing it with 14 points each in 6 games… and Antii Niemi has been solid in net for them posting 5 of the 6 wins so far and a sub 2.00 GAA.

The Oilers mailed it in last night, so I don’t have much faith in them tonight. The pessimist says momentum going in says they should get killed. The optimist says that teams that have bad games often have big bounce back games. We’ll see which route the Oilers go, but these Sharks have been dominant, so I’m not holding my breath for a good game tonight. The Oil can’t autopilot their way through this one, like in Phoenix.

No word on the lineup just yet that I’ve found, so for now I assume things are the same, although there is a good chance we see Khabibulin tonight for no other reason than to shelter Doobie from potential embarrassment.

EDIT: OK Lander has been called up to replace Horcoff (hurt neck after being hit from behind by Doan)… Paajarvi has been sent down (since we have to send someone down to recall Lander). Fistric might slot in as well if Petrell is out (i.e. we go with 11F 7D).

PRE-GAME RANT

The home opener! Sounds like plenty of goodies are being given away at the first three home games. I get to go to home game #2, but will be watching this one on the moving picture box.

The first game went pretty well. Our boy Justin Schultz (or “Jultz” as he seems to now be dubbed in the Oil universe) had a pretty solid debut. Poise. Oodles of poise. This kid is going to be a hell of a player. Of course, it’s just game one. I was also happy with Yakupov even though most of the Oil world seem to be giving him a hard time on at least one of the two goals against in the Sunday game. I don’t fault him at all. One could be classified as a “rookie mistake” at best – the mistake being not knowing when to make the easy play. This was on the attempted pass to Hemsky when he was in the better shooting position. It led to a turnover, yes, but I don’t blame him. This will come with confidence. Not to worry. The other goal, he was following Sedin into the corner. Sedin passed it out front, past an onlooker in Whitney, to Kassian, who Gagner and Whitney both abandoned in front of the net. You’d be reaching to blame this one on Yakupov.

Anyways, I’m hoping to see more good play from the young guys tonight. Eberle, Petry and Horcoff all seem to be playing pretty inspired, so I’m hoping they keep that going. Hall looks good, but not Taylor Hall good just yet (plus two penalties the first game.. tsk tsk). The Nuge needs to get going, but I have confidence that he will.

Enjoy the game folks! Not sure if I’ll be around for the GDT chat, but please feel free to stop in.. generally people pop in at scattered times, so if you hang in the chat, eventually a few will be in there.

PRE-GAME RANT

Hello folks. Tonight the Oilers face the Sharks again. The last meeting, a week ago, went well with the Oilers picking up the 3-2 win in the shootout.

Dubnyk will get the start for this one, and Ben Eager is in for Darcy Hordichuk. Cam Barker and Theo Peckham are also scratches. To quote Steve-O, “so they are planning on winning this one?”

I think if we picked up a GOOD goaltender (perhaps Harding can do it?) in the off-season, and a few better bottom six guys, this team will look a lot better. Another solid d-man would be nice too. But this line up is looking a little closer to an NHL line up. It still has issues though, so don’t worry, I’m not too clueless. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Oil pulled off a win tonight.

PRE-GAME RANT

Not a lot to say for today’s match up. Oilers… Sharks.. late start tonight. Hopefully it isn’t a stinker. We really need to watch a win though, as these are getting difficult to watch. I think the Oilers sealed their fate with a couple of boneheaded plays that led to breakaways (or what was probably a 4 on nothing), but they seemed in it for most of the game. So it sucks to see them losing regardless of how well they play.
