The rumor mill has been busy lately, as it always is at this time, with suggestions that the Oilers will be moving the #1 overall pick. So I thought it would be great to take a look at every team in the NHL and consider their assets… NHLers, and prospects … and consider which players we should be asking about. I mostly focused on the defense, and a bit on goaltenders and centermen, as I think those are our biggest needs. Some of these teams wouldn’t be able to offer much for our #1 pick and some teams would need more than our #1 pick for their assets, so I’ve also considered a list of tradeable players for the Oilers. This time of the year, it’s always fun to talk about trades.. but often they’re pretty unrealistic. I don’t mention any specific deals here though (save for a couple). Please feel free to make some suggestions in the comment section for guys we should be after, or trades we could make.

Alright, here’s my post on what players are out there for the Oilers to pick up, as well as who we have available. Discuss your rumors here, and feel free to post about any successful trades and such in comments here too (also feel free to point out anything significant I’ve missed).

Oilers needs:
Goaltending – Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk won’t cut it.
Mobile, multi-faceted, big minute defenseman (who couldn’t use one of those?).
Bottom six depth players.
Argument for another top-six forward if Hemsky is traded.

Me personally would love to see him back, but I wouldn’t give up much for a 35 year old salary dump (even though he does contribute a bunch of offense) with only 1 year remaining.

According to the Fourth Period:

The Oilers could go after impending free agent center Zenon Konopka next month, if he hits the unrestricted market, the Edmonton Journal Reports.

Konopka isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and is a solid faceoff man, something the Oilers appear to be in the market for.

“Would I sign him? One hundred per cent, yes,” an NHL scout told the Journal. “He’s hard to play against and every team needs a captain of the bottom eight players on their roster and that’s Konopka.”

From what I read in the Journal, it’s more of a suggestion than a rumor, but man that would be nice.
