The last time we faced the Penguins was over 2 years ago, it coincided with RNH’s debut and first NHL goal. The Oilers were victorious that glorious night, but much has changed since then. It’s no secret that our back end has been having issues not unlike digesting a road side taco. It’s been pretty bad… Goalies have been letting in softies and the defence has been getting schooled. Our offence has been keeping us in most games, but it’s just not enough. Something has to give.

MacTavish has been on the phone but what’s really available out there for goalies right now? St. Louis does have a few options and with Lehner doing well in Ottawa, perhaps either he or Anderson could be had. It’s not going to be cheap and the Oilers will have to give up an asset. The copper and blue are sitting at 49 contracts, so maxing the roster this early in the season won’t be the best option. Ideally a player for player trade will go down, if there are any takers.

Another side story is Yakupov. Eakins has had him benched the last two games and it would appear he’s back in the lineup tonight. Eakins did great work with the youth while working with the Marlies, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here. He definitely squeezed more out of Kadri who was a bit of an enigma but has now turned things around enough to get himself a decent contract extension over there in the center of the universe. Yak is a great talent but if he’s not buying into Eakins system things aren’t going to work out.

Joensuu is hurting again so Jones has been recalled. Larsen is going back down to OKC.

Jarome Iginla trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins…

By , March 27, 2013 11:50 pm

Wow, what a big win for the Penguins. They picked up Jarome Iginla and lost no current roster pieces and still have the cupboards stocked well enough.

Going the other way are two forward college prospects, Ben Hanowski, Kenneth Agostino, and also the Penguins 2013 first-round pick. TSN intitially caught a sniff of a rumor that Iginla was traded to the Bruins, and this was at first what was believed to be true (reported by Aaron Ward as a done deal). Sister station RDS (as well as Sportsnet) stated adamantly that this was not true as the Bruins were denying it. Shortly after, the Flames told the media to hang around after their game, as an announcement was to be made. After a whole bunch of babble, Jay Feaster finally spilled the beans that Iginla had been traded to the Penguins.

The deal with the Penguins looks better on paper than the one they had set up with the Bruins. One of the forwards (Hanowski) is a pretty big kid and put up decent numbers with St. Cloud State (is Lando Calrissian is coach?). Agostino leads Yale University in scoring this year. Time will tell on this one, but at least it’s better for the Flames than what they’d have gotten from the Bruins.

I think the fallout of the Bruins trade sets up an Oilers/Bruins trade, so watch for that soon.

It seems like forever since we’ve last seen a regulation game so, needless to say, I’m excited as hell for this one. The big story about tonight’s game is that we’ll see the NHL debut of two Oilers in Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Anton Lander. The Oilers are giving Nugent-Hopkins the best possible start he can get by playing between Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky. These guys have been playing together in practice for quite a while now, so it will be interesting to see what kind of chemistry has been built there. We all know that Hemsky, as amazingly skilled as he is, can be a difficult player to play with at times. But I think Hall and Nugent-Hopkins are very smart players that should have no troubles keeping up.

Lander will center the fourth line tonight, which contains Ryan Jones and Darcy Hordichuk. I don’t expect too much magic from him tonight playing with those two guys. But I do expect to see what he can do in the defensive zone at shutting down opponents and playing an energy game.

The other HUGE deal for me.. Continue reading 'GDT: Oilers 2 – Penguins 1 (SO) – Game 1 – 2011-10-09 @ 7:00 PM MST – SNETW'»

Not many teams can bitch about injuries this year like the Oilers can. The Penguins can just based on having two elite players out of the lineup.. Malkin for the remainder of the season, and Crosby is very unknown (in fact his career is even up in the air). As much as people may hate Crosby, it’ll be a damn shame if the league loses another great player to concussion problems… especially before the guy even reached 24. Crosby’s injury is a tough one to prevent though, as to me it looked like accidental contact.

Anyways, enough of the headshot/concussion debate… the Oilers had a really tough loss vs. the Red Wings on Friday. I feel that the refereeing in that one was very one sided. The Oilers definitely were robbed of a win. I think they’ve got the legs to give the Penguins a run for their money. The Penguins are 3-3-4 in their last 10, while the Oilers are 4-5-1.

Prediction: 3-2 Oilers

GDT - Edmonton Oilers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins head into Edmonton tonight to face the slumping Oilers. The Oilers are a horrendous 1-11-1 in their last 13 games since going on a 5-game winning streak on the road. The Penguins have had their own share of struggles lately, having gone 5-8-0 in the same stretch.

Both the brain and heart tell me this is going to be an ugly game, whether Pittsburgh has been hot or not (unless Dubnyk plays unreal). So that said, here are my predictions for the game:

Brain: Penguins 7, Oilers 4
Heart: Penguins 5, Oilers 2

One last thing… Tambellini addressed the media Wednesday about Khabibulin and some other issues. One topic of discussion was in regards to thecaptainethanmoreau’s in which this exchange took place:
