Saw a USC Trojans game while in the states, college football is awesome

Back from vacation, saw Racki get married off (he mentioned it in the comments somewhere, figure it’s safe for talking about), indulged in Vegas for a few days and then went to San Francisco for the weekend to catch a USC and 49er game. And you think Oiler fans are intense!

None the less, it appeared the Oilers had hit the bottom, and have recently attempted to make themselves respectable. Two straight wins, granted against shite quality teams, and looking at a very beatable team tomorrow. Something made me think they were not as bad as the first games have indicated, and we all know they are not as good as yesterday shows, so I’m guessing they’ll settle in around 20th place in the league by seasons end. Let’s make that my official prediction for the rest of the year.

Oiler News

Lots of Oiler news:
– Larianov bitched to the media about Yak’s icetime, which created a mini-firestorm where Yak was asked if he was happy about it and he said no. Honestly the less said about this non-item the better. I mean, come on. Dude wants to play, and it isn’t him asking for his way out.
– Smid was traded, and to the Flames no less. It seems Mac-T has put the team on notice that if things don’t get better quickly, he’ll trade all remaining defense away. I don’t like the trade, and the only way I think this becomes a win is if Brossoit becomes an actual #1 goalie which I’m not sold that he can be. But he was awesome on the Oil Kings.
– And apparently with the cap room freed up by that trade, Bryzgalov was signed to a deal to shore up the goaltending. Honestly, I didn’t think that Dubnyk would continue to shit the bed like he had been but at the price I don’t see this as an issue. If he returns to his Phoenix/Anaheim years I think he’ll help this team. Certainly a better quote.
– Mac-T had a state of the union address. I agree with pretty much all of what he said. In short (as I heard it), the team sucked but he won’t trade the good bits for a quick fix. While it sucks that the team is spending another year getting railed by real NHL teams, sending out talent in an attempt to save this year isn’t what is needed. Further, he mentioned that defense is what is needed, and while this isn’t a shock to anyone who pays attention to the team, it’s a positive to finally have Oiler management echo that sentiment.
– Arcobello has been told to apartment up. Good news for the little guy. Even though his waiver eligibility makes him the target of paper moves, he has definitely earned a spot on this team.
– All that said, the team is still in a terrible spot and I’d like to see a solid 2nd quarter of the season to show us that they are trending upwards and not just becoming the Islanders/Panthers/Thrashers of the west.

League News

– Buffalo cleaned house and turfed their GM, bringing in Pat Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalafontaine as their President of Hockey Operations (Kevin Lowe position) and Ted Nolan as their interm coach. Glad to see Nolan get another shot.
– Versteeg has been traded back to the Blackhawks, with Florida eating half of his contract (and cap hit) for the rest of his deal. I’d love it if Mac-T would start targeting cap/cash strapped teams and get players like this.
– Quick is hurt! Scrivens is playing lights out! I wonder who the Toronto goalie scout is cause seriously, with Rask, Scrivens and Reimer I’d like to see who he thinks is the next one. Or do they just draft a lot of goalies and hope for the best?
– Stamkos broke his leg. Now we can pretend we care about Tampa and what’ll happen to their season, but really, who will replace him on team Canada? I mean, that takes one hell of a triggerman away from Crosby.
– Chelios, Shanahan, Niedermayer, Shero (deceased) and Heaney were all inducted into the Hall of Fame. Still no Burns.
– East is still a joke compared to the West.
– I’m sure there’s more stuff but meh. Go Seahawks!

Anyways, on to the standings (and fight video, and Oil Kings):

Go Seahawks!

Go Seahawks!

We’re a few weeks into the new season, and it’s already been somewhat of a train wreck/tire fire. The team is sitting 5 points out of a playoff spot (although I really have no idea what with the new division/playoff setup), and as Elliotte Friedman mentioned that in the last few years (since the advent of the loser point) being out of a playoff spot by November 1st doesn’t bode well for making the playoffs.

That said, I don’t think the Oilers have played poorly (well, they didn’t to start) it’s just they didn’t get good goaltending, and once that showed up the team started to suck.

Oiler News

Lots of Oiler news:
– Hall hurt his knee and is out for 4 weeks. Wasn’t a dirty hit at all in my opinion, just unlucky. None the less, not a good time for it.
– Ryan Smyth is also hurt and out a week. Not as big of a loss, however he was playing very well prior to the injury.
– Mike Brown was traded to San Jose for a 4th rounder. This is great as players like him are usually available on the waiver wire.
– Arcobello has played well with 10 points in his first 10 games. Not too shabby.
– Hemsky is still awesome.
– Pitlick and Eager were both called up and played last game. I’m surprised Eager made a game as Gazdic seems to have replaced him, Brown and MacIntyre but what do I know. Not sure why Omark hasn’t been called up as he has been getting points.
– Gagner is closer to return and we should be seeing him soon. This will be a good thing.

League News

– I have been working the election, so I have been unable to follow the league at all. I have no idea what has been going on (it was hard enough to follow the Oilers).
– I do know the Sharks have been awesome, and Joe Thornton is a great quote. He’s been a favorite for a while, but that makes him even greater.
– Oh, and I know the West has been kicking the East’s ass. But that’s par for the course really.

Lets go CBJ!

Lets go CBJ!

Well, as I’m sure you can tell from the abundance of posting here, this season has been going just peachy for the Oilers. I’d say it’s gotten embarrassing to be an Oiler fan, but that boat sailed a few years ago. At least the Oil Kings have given me something to cheer for the past bit otherwise…well, I don’t know. I’d like to say I’m done with this shit team, but we all know that isn’t true. For whatever reason I still watch the games. Must be a sucker for punishment.

Oiler News

– Lots of Oiler news lately but the biggest is obviously the firing of Tambellini. And fuck, finally. What a clusterfuck…yet I remember being hopeful when he got the job. Jesus.
– Mac T got hired as his replacement, with the newly re-hired Howson hired on in his previous role. I know a lot of people are not pleased with this, but I like it. I was a Mac T fan when he was coaching here (just didn’t think he was given the horses needed), and I think he’s a smart guy who can evaluate players well. I don’t understand the Howson hiring, but whatever.
– Lowe still has a job. Surprising, but not at the same time. Him and Katz are BFF’s, and must have some plan (plot) to fuck the city for years to come.
– Not only does Lowe still have a job, but he also said in the Tambellini/Mac T presser that there are two types of fans, and they only listen to the one type (i.e. the ones who are in the building and paying their ridiculous prices). Hilarious. Love it. Oh, and he’s got 6 rings that say he knows how to win (proven by 7 years out of the playoffs).
– Some injury news, with the Nuge on to his second shoulder surgery and Hemsky out for the season with a foot issue he got from blocking a shot. I really wish would stop going into corners first, and blocking shots (like the euro he is) so he’d stop getting hurt.
– Also, after that game last night you should have heard Gagner. Man he was pissed. So much so that even that tit tencer noticed. Was “seething” in the corner to quote the asshat. And I’d say I’m not surprised. Wouldn’t be surprised to see players start to ask for their way out soon, unless Mac T can show that he knows what he’s doing.

League News

– I’ll be honest, I haven’t been paying much attention to what’s been going on in the league. I can tell you that the Seahawks secondary is looking fucking awesome now, and they picked up the best available WR in the FA period. Looking real good.
– Uh, Ovechkin has been pretty good lately hey? I thought he was all washed up now…
– Ah, fuck it. I can’t think of anything else. Feel free to mention it in the comments.

LETS GO LUMBUS!

Anyways, on to the standings (and fight video, and Oil Kings):

Well, I’m thinking it’s time for another MMS.

How is everyone liking the season so far? Up until the road trip, it seems as though we have seen this story before. I wonder why that is though, cause on paper our top 6 should be one of the better ones in the league. Is it the bottom 6 forwards that are costing the team wins? Is it the defense? Team defense in general? Are we seeing the regression that can be expected of young players?

I think one thing we can all agree on is that the goaltending has been outstanding so far (with the exception of Dubnyk’s first period against Colorado). But personally I’d like to see Tambellini to add another bottom 6 forward and some quality D. Considering Whitney is getting run out of town, I wonder what he can get in return (although there is no fucking way Potter is a better D than Whitney).

Oiler News

– CBC’s Andi Petrillo just mentioned that Hall’s leg injury is something to do with his hamstring, and it’s not looking good for tomorrow’s game
– Horcoff was recently mentioned saying he still can’t grip the stick and is expected to be out at least another two weeks

League News

– Also, how good are the Blackhawks? Have earned a point in every game so far, and have only lost 3 games…the road to the Cup in the west will go through Chicago I’m thinking
– The Flames signed Ryan O’Reilly to an offer sheet, which the Avs matched super quick (seriously, I’d have waited the full week just to fuck with the Flames). The funny part came just after when Sportsnet found out that he’d have to pass through waivers, so Calgary would have had to give up the 2 picks and more than likely wouldn’t have even got the player. Which is awesome. That said, could you imagine if that came out while the Avs were still contemplating it? Feaster would have been eaten alive.
– The league is talking realignment. Which will be good, but as it stands now the eastern conference divisions would have 8 teams each while the western divisions would only have 7. This is making things a little sticky, but really which eastern team do you pull over to the west? Any one you choose will be screwed over really.

Monday Morning Standings – Superbowl Edition

Don't really like either team, but lets go with the 49ers...NFC West represent!

Don’t really like either team, but lets go with the 49ers…NFC West represent!

It’s the first MMS of the 2013 season! And since it’s the superbowl lets make some predictions…the coin toss will be heads, the anthem will be over 1:34, 49ers will score first and will win the game. Please note I lost all of my bets last year, so what you do with those predictions is on you.

Anyways, 15% of the way through the season, and we are in February, and the Oilers are currently in a playoff position!!! Holy shit!

All in all, the team looks as was expected, with the top 2 lines providing offense, bottom 6 looking a little weak and the defense looking…challenged. Dubnyk has been a pleasant surprise however, and has held us in a couple games already.

Powerplay looks to be a killer, and the PK outside of the one sharks game looks to be solid.

Oiler News

– Gagner and Hall lead the team in scoring at over a ppg (23rd and 26th in league scoring).
– Dubnyk is at a 0.925 sv% even after that one Sharks game!
– Yakupov has awesome celebrations.

League News

– Stamkos has 16 fucking points in 8 games…jesus. Kid’s pretty good.
– Coyotes are still as shit-show ownership-wise.
– Luongo is now awesome in my books based solely on his twitter, and cause he’s making shit all weird in Canucks-town.
– Spezza out 2 months for back surgery.

Anyways, on to the standings (and fight video, and Oil Kings):
