Breaking it Down! – Coaching/Management (2010/11 Edition)

At least he can't fuck this up

And after procrastinating as long as possible here is the final post with this years Break it Down series. The rest can be found here.

Last year I commented on how I didn’t like the hiring of Quinn and would have preferred to see Renney hired, so I guess a year later it worked out for me. I just can’t stand to see a guy roll the lines at this level. They just get eaten alive.

Also, how shitty was it that Tippett got fired a couple weeks after we found our guys. That would be a killer coach.

As for Tambellini, I am kind of happy with the past year. But there are still issues that need to be figured out.

Step into my office…

...cause your f***ing fired!!!

Robert Daum was notified by the Edmonton Oilers organization last week that his contract as head coach of the then Falcons now Barons will not be renewed.  Comments suggest that he was surprised by the decision and had no indications he would be lining up at the unemployment office.

The fall guy…

The original fall guy / 6-million dollar man

The original fall guy / 6-million dollar man

Yesterday, Guy Flaming over at Coming Down the Pipe posted a great article about a fan who called into the Oilers lunch this week saying that “the fans will need a sacrifice.” In Guy’s article, he speculated that it could be the scouting staff taking the fall, just based on that they hadn’t had their contracts renewed and because they have been one constant through much of this mess. Guy did feel though that this would be a “smoke screen”, if that group were cleaned up, and I agree as well. No matter how you stack it, this is still an issue with management. The more things change, the more they stay the same..

The more things change, the more they stay the same..

I don’t normally create posts these days based solely on posts on other blogs, however David Staples has been doing some good write ups lately that I have an easy time agreeing with.

Most notably:

If the Oilers don’t make the playoffs, Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini will have to resign.
AND
The Oilers need to blow up this team and trade for expiring contracts and draft picks.
AND
If Jim Rutherford can do it in Carolina, why not Kevin Lowe in Edmonton?

They echo a lot of sentiments heard around here. They’re unforgiving and honest articles. Often, I find that journalists are a bit too afraid to tell it like it is, but Staples pulls no punches in his criticisms towards management. Break it down! – Management/Coaching

I would brag about it...although I though he won it?

I would still brag about it win or lose...although I thought he won it?

Note: Both Steve-O and Racki are away on vacation. We’ve left the ship on autopilot. So if some kick ass news happens like trading for Kovalchuk, pretend like you heard it here first, and pretend like this post still makes sense ;) Racki is back September 10th.

This is the last among a few recurring posts where I break down and discuss different parts of the Oilers and how I think they are going to perform this coming year, their strengths and weaknesses and where we could use some help. They are can be found here.
