PRE-GAME RANT
So last game we saw Andrew Cogliano’s return… now we get to see Dustin Penner… however this isn’t his first game back to Edmonton. It is, however, his first game back since the pancake injury. If you saw the lady who was responsible for the delicious stack, you might not be so critical. I can also say that Dustin Penner’s “fat” is still in better shape than me.. so I’d never honestly be critical of the guy’s weight/shape. I just love a good laugh and glad he is taking it in stride and poking fun at himself.
Anyways, the Oilers are in a world of hurt right now, sliding down the standings… they’re running out of spots to slide down to. Currently, only the team that beat them 5-0 (Anaheim Ducks) and the Columbus Blue Jackets sit below them in the standings. The Ducks are just one point behind. Let’s be honest… when the season started, no one expected the Oilers would be near the top of the standings like they were… however this has been a monumental collapse to their season and is incredibly disappointing. There are cries for a few heads out in Oilersland from Renney to Tambellini. I’m not willing to give up on Renney, but the other fellow seems to be either still in the tear-it-down phase, or is horrible at reacting to troubled times here and plugging holes.
No word on the lineup just yet, so I’ll post the same as last game for now and modify it later.

PRE-GAME RANT
Tonight the Oilers say goodbye to another huge legend.. Rod Phillips. Rod’s been broadcasting Oilers games since their WHA days (since 1973). How many of us have turned down the sound on a game and flipped on the radio. Thanks to radio delay, that doesn’t work so well anymore, but my dad used to do that back in the day, and it was glorious. Rod’s already been inducted into the Hall of Fame.. will we see a jersey retired in his honor (or perhaps a start of a ring of honor here?). I hear the players will be wearing a specific number with Phillips on the back for the ceremony (37, to commemorate his 37 years of service). Whatever they do, I am sure it will be memorable. Phillips is a great announcer. I think he hands the mic off to a guy who will one day be seen as a great talent too, in Jack Michaels, but that guy has BIG shoes to fill. Anyways, on to the game…
The Oilers are coming off a tough loss against the Flames in which they got to a 4-1 lead before seeing it slowly chipped away. They lost it 5-4 in the shootout. What a heart breaker. But really, it was great to see this band of misfits get off to such a great start and play a hard game. But the Flames comeback was just too much for them. The Kings have won their last 3 and sit in 9th in the league right now. If you’re like me, you’re hoping for an Oilers win BIG TIME tonight, because the Kings are in control of one of our 2011 1st round picks. Right now it’s looking to be a high 20s pick. But, given how tight the standings are, the Oilers can help try and give themselves a mid-round pick for the 2011 draft. This is a draft pick rally we can all get behind, unlike “Losin’ for Larsson” and such.
That said, I have a tough time believing the Oilers can win this one.. but I’m going to spread some positive vibe and guess that they win…
Prediction 5-3 Oilers
P.S. Trogdor asks: “In true Oiler fashion, how loud will Penner be booed?”
Followed by Steve-O with: “also, how many goals will he score?”
Indeed.

PRE-GAME RANT
I have to admit… it’s been a long break since the last Oilers game, but I haven’t missed Oilers hockey at all. I’m normally all about watching the Oilers as much as I can, but the break was nice. Hemsky hopefully will be back tonight. The lines below are the actual practice lines from today. Despite what Tencer thinks, Stortini will not be in the lineup tonight (uhh… awkwwwarrrrd). I can only assume that his penciling in Stortini on line 4 was a force of habit.
Anyways, I’ll be at the game tonight and hoping for a win, so…
Prediction: 4-2 Oilers
Khabi starts tonight, so hopefully the long time off will give him a long enough break to get into top form. OK, stop laughing..

Click here for TEAM CANADA GDT
First off, I will say that the two team’s records and place in the standings are quite a statement as to how hard it is to make it in the playoffs in the West. The Kings are sitting at 19-12-1… which sounds like a pretty damn good record, but right now that’s only good for 9th place in the West. Yikes. The Oilers have a long way to go if they have any hope of making it in. I haven’t completely written them off yet, and it probably won’t be long before I do… but I still have hopes right now that they win as much as they can.
Anyways, I think tonight should be a fun one to watch for us. I’m going to call this one a 5-2 win for the good guys.

PRE-GAME RANT
Two final games left in the season for the Oilers. Be prepared for an early one. Oddly enough, this one is on Sportsnet too (you would think a Saturday game would be on CBC). I’m going to keep this write up short. The Oilers are 5-4-1 in their last 10, while the Kings are 4-3-3.
Prediction: 4-3 Oilers.
