Is Tambellini the Bluff Master?
I know it sounds silly, but I think the Oilers have been trying to sell Khabibulin as our “MVP” not to us fans, but to GMs around the league. That contract is heinously bad, but it seems like the Oil have been making efforts to try and bring another goaltender here, and may have been trying to move Khabibulin too. I know we all figure Tambellini to be pretty bad. I have given my share of criticism too. But I think he’s a little smarter than we think and this MVP business is just a ploy to trick other GMs into wanting him.
The 2009/10 speech would go… “Wow, we finished 30th this season because our “MVP” was hurt for so long…”.
The 2010/11 speech… “We finished 30th this season but thankfully we had Khabibulin there to keep us in it.. I can’t imagine if he wasn’t there!”.
Those are far from direct quotes.. not even close. But that is basically what it seemed that Tambellini was trying to convey, and it can only be for the reason of convincing other GMs to take Khabi on. Maybe I’m giving the guy too much credit… but I think he can see now that Continue reading 'Bluff Master T and the MVP'»
Tambi was a busy man today...
OK, really, today wasn’t THAT good. It was good though, and I was surprised how much the Edmonton Oilers got done in a single day. This is the same crew of people that snailed their way through last off-season and did much to improve the farm team, but very little to improve the big club with Colin Fraser, Jim Vandermeer and Kurtis Foster being the “big” additions.
So, let’s summarize: Continue reading 'And on the 1st day, he created the heavens, then called it an off-season…'»
You can actually hear the groin tearing if you stare at this pic long enough...
Old news now, but we’ve got to post on it….
Khabibulin has injured his groin and is expected to be placed on IR. Gerber has been recalled. But don’t get too excited folks, rumor is that Dubnyk will get the games and that is why Deslauriers wasn’t an emergency recall.
Re-Khabi seen here, taking a swing of the ol' Jesus Juice
From iNews 880:
Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin will face a jury trial after all.
The lawyer for the 37-year-old was in an Arizona courtroom today attempting to have his client’s impaired driving charges dropped. Mark DuBiel argued that Khabibulin shouldn’t have had to undergo a field sobriety test because he had recently undergone back surgery.
DuBiel says his client’s constitutional rights were violated and it would have been hard for him to pass the tests even if he was sober. The motion to suppress was denied though.
Khabibulin was pulled over for going 70 mph in a 45 zone in February. He’s charged with DUI, DUI with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or more and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 mph.
The trial is slated to begin on July 7th.
I can honestly say I’m happy that this is the case. Not because I’m pissed off about Khabibulin’s contract. If Hemsky did the same, or someone else that I’d like, I’d want the case done properly. I don’t like seeing anyone get away with something like this.
That said, anyone know the law on travel to the US if Khabibulin is found guilty? I know Arizona is pretty strict on their DUIs, so he may face a misdemeanor charge. But I’m not sure if that is big enough to keep him from leaving Canada… any of you junior, wannabe lawyers know?
