Avs, Oil and Caps. Who's next?

So far this season three players have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Patient zero was Peter Budaj of the Colorado Avalanche, more recently Ladislav Smid of the Edmonton Oilers and today news of Quintin Laing of the Washington Capitals.  Colorado and Edmonton have met recently, but this was after Budaj had already been quarantined.   The Caps have yet to play either team, so this isn’t just cross contamination.

Smid Contracted (past tense) H1N1

Tonight Quinn released the news that a player on the Oilers had contracted the H1N1 virus. It was later confirmed on the Oilers website that the player in question is Ladislav Smid who has since recovered from the virus.

According to Pat Quinn, Alberta Health guidelines are to not test for H1N1 unless the person is hospitalized. Quinn also noted that the players are not in the at risk group for serious effects of the virus. “Young people are getting it and there is no way of stopping it, I guess,” Quinn stated. “We want to be able to help them through it. They’re not at the at risk group – they’re at risk to get it, but not at risk for serious illness other than the sweats and the fevers and that sort of thing. So we’re going to stay on top of that and there may be further discussion tomorrow.”

In other sad, somewhat related news.. 13-year old minor hockey leaguer Evan Frustaglio died monday night from the H1N1 virus. Frustaglio was in London, Ontario for a hockey tournament when he complained of a sore throat and cough on Friday night. By Saturday, Frustaglio was experiencing more flu-like symptoms and had even seen a physician the next day who had advised the family to continue taking medication and treat the fever, and the boy would be fine. Within 24 hours later, the boy had passed away from the virus.
