Tough choices…

I'll go with the Jaromir Jagr in the bottom right..

I’ll go with the Jaromir Jagr in the bottom right..

So there’s been some talk out there lately about acquiring a new goaltender, possibly moving one of the young guns to get one, and other things. I’ll offer my take.

The Oilers are very stacked with high-flying offense. Currently, we’re looking at Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Nail Yakupov, Sam Gagner, David Perron and Ales Hemsky (who may be gone before the end of the year). This is an obvious position of strength.

On the blue line, the Oilers currently have (at the NHL level): Ladislav Smid, Jeff Petry, Anton Belov, Justin Schultz, Nick Schultz and Andrew Ference. Of these guys, Justin Schultz and Anton Belov are standouts. Neither, at this point, are what I’d consider clear #1 guys, however. They’re definitely above average.. but there is no d-man in this group that you feel safe with on the ice in any situation.

In goal, we have Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarbera. Of course, questions Continue reading 'Tough choices…'»

Break it Down! – Goaltending (2013/14 Edition)

The job is his, can he do it now?

Continuing on with the break it down series. The others can be found at the following location.

Finally, FINALLY, Khabi is off of the team. I’d say that contract/signing has been the biggest glaring mistake of the entire Tambellini regime (not that he did much of anything else). And with that, this team is now Dubnyk’s to take to the promised land.

Doing what he does best...not helping us win games/helping us draft high.

Nothing has changed. Same group as last year. Except I have more faith that Dubnyk can do it, and more faith that Kreuger will bench that shitty one.

Break it Down! – Goaltending (2011/12 Edition)

Just think, to have a good goalie again.

I called last years goaltending situation a clusterfuck. It looks better this year. No really. It does. Dubnyk has proven to be at the very least a NHL level backup. That’s a plus. Khabibulin has one less year on his contract. That’s a plus. It is quite possible he learned how to be more nimble in prison too.

And the winner of the backup is….

Not you... but nice save, Jeff

Not you... but nice save, Jeff

The Oilers have made their goaltending decision, at last…. Jeff Deslauriers has been placed on waivers. I think they made the right choice. I kind of figured that was what happened when Delsauriers was said to be not at practice today. MacIntyre and Whitney also absent.. hmm…….. some sort of deal in the works? Nah, just trying to scare you folks (Whitney is taking a “rest day” – which I’d say he needed). I wonder if a callup will be made though. Jacques will be back in a couple of weeks (apparently), so they could be making room for him, but I’ll suspect that they’ll bring someone up in the meantime. If waivers are no issue, I hope it’s Belle or Reddox.
