PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers face the Coyotes this afternoon. The Oil played a retty good game in their last outing, vs. the Capitals, but for whatever reason, they couldn’t put the puck past Holtby until late in the game, while the Capitals… capitalized (booooooooo) on their chances when needed.

The Oilers won 2 and lost 1 against the Coyotes last year. Both of the Oilers’ wins had to come in extra time.. one in OT, the other in the shootout.

So this could be a fairly close game. The Oilers are stuck in a serious rut, where the bounces just don’t seem to be going for them. They need to just keep on battling hard, however, and hopefully the wins will finally come. Of course having some guys like Gagner and Joensuu back couldn’t hurt.

Looks like LaBarbera will start against his former team.

Enjoy the game..

PRE-GAME RANT

The new look Oilers will have another new look today. Notable roster slots to fill include Hall (knee – 4 weeks) and Smyth (groin – 1 week). In response the team has called up Pitlick and Eager. Hall’s offence is hard to replace so in an effort to get the Yak attack going, he’ll be on a line with Eberle and RNH. Eberle strained his hip slightly on Saturday, but says he’s good to go today.  There won’t be any better opportunities for guys like Jones to prove themselves like there is over the next month or so.  He used to have the versatility to play on different lines with different roles.  I still think it has to do with the haircut, but I’m rooting for him.

MacTavish cited Gazdic’s play, the desire to call up Pitlick, and the number of contracts on the books as contributors to moving Mr. Brown and his moustache. Someone should tell him the princess is in another castle and give him a map of San Jose. It’s never easy to be traded, but moving to California on the cusp of an Edmonton winter and going to a top contender probably ease the pain just a little bit. Good luck to you Mike. This gives the team a little more flexibility in bringing in someone to fill another need. D-Man that could play 30 tough minutes would be nice, or maybe a proven tender. Dubs has been better of late though.

Tonight`s game is in Montreal. A town full of hockey zealots with a lot of history and pride. It`s not an easy house to walk into and leave with a win, so expect the boys will be in tough tonight. The Habs likely sympathize with the Oilers on the injury front as they are without Briere and just lost Prust as well after an awkward fall into the end boards to name a few of many.

After Dubnyk`s recent elevated play and earning the win last game I expect he`ll get the start again tonight, but Eakins has surprised me before so if I hear anything more official, I`ll update the projected lines below.

Last but not least, a big congrats to Anton Lander, the latest captain of the OKC Barons. Continue reading 'W – Oilers 4, Canadiens 2 – Game 10 – 2013-10-22 @ 5:30 PM MST – SNETW'»

PRE-GAME RANT

So I won’t doom and gloom this one too much. The Oilers are in a poor spot in the standings… sounds like the Corsi war is slowly being lost. The Oilers started just over 50% in the first few games, but as of late are now are around 45%, in the last couple of games (stats courtesy of ROMULUS APOTHEOSIS on Lowetide). I’m not going to concern myself with those numbers too much, as it is just two games, and we should expect that the numbers will fluctuate. The first 6 games were pretty much hovering around 50%. I’m starting to realize I have to buy into this whole Corsi thing and advanced stats in general a bit more, as voodoo as they are. I feel like Craig MacTavish, refusing to wear a Jofa bucket because it might crush my beautiful curly locks. I’m not going to focus on them too much, but I definitely will pay more attention.

I think this new “swarm defense” is SORT of working. What I’ve observed is it seems to be prone to breakdowns, very easily. Or at least, the Oilers execution of that is prone to breakdowns. Guys are often left alone in very dangerous scoring positions.. I don’t really like it at all, and have started to wonder how much longer it will last before the Oilers go to a more basic approach like zone defense. I suspect that Dallas Eakins will cling onto this like MacTavish clinging onto the no-helmet stance, and me refusing to fully buy into these newfangled advanced stats. He did seem to buckle a little bit, as he admitted recently that on the plane he really considered changing things up. I am thinking what that means is dumping the swarm. I want to make one thing straight though.. I think it’s probably a good system. I just don’t think it’s something these players are grasping well enough. So.. what’s the over under on how long until Eakins switches to zone defense? You don’t want to panic too much, but I think it’s clear that the Oilers grip on man-to-man defense last year was terrible. Apparently Detroit uses the swarm. I’m not sure if they still do, but what made me believe that is this quote from Kyle Quincey:

“In the D zone, I’d never heard of ‘the swarm’ before I got here,” said defenseman Kyle Quincey, who spent 2005-08 in the Wings organization, left for almost four seasons, then returned at the trade deadline last year. “He never talked about that eight years ago. But if you look around on video, all the teams do it now. He’s definitely a very good systems coach. He’s definitely challenged me to a better player, for sure. A lot of skating in this system.”

We all know the Oilers have been trying to follow the Red Wings model for quite some time.

It’s the wee hours of the morning.. forward lines are quite likely, as these were Friday’s practice lines. Not sure about the D-lines or starting goaltender, but I assume there won’t be changes there.

PRE-GAME RANT

Step 1. Take a blank piece of paper and cover the right side of the image.
Step 2. With the distraction removed look closely and you will see 2 very storied franchises with their names all over the cup. Both have been a long time removed from the glory days, but who says we can’t reminisce over a pint?

Tonight will be the first of two meetings this season against that other team from New York.  The Islanders are off to a similarly rocky start with 2 wins so far on the season.  This is game 4 of the Oilers’ Eastern road trip and so far they have accrued just one point in an OT loss to the Maple Leafs.   A game they let slip away in the final minutes.

Current hot button topic is goaltending in Edmonton.  Dubnyk gets the start tonight, so hopefully we see a solid effort in an attempt to reassert his starter status.  The defence will have to be better and the team on a whole needs to start playing a more complete game.

The team is still doing well sitting 5th in the league for goals for, the issue is we’re 30th for goals against…  Arcobello has been making good use of his time up sharing the team lead in points with 6 assists and a team leading +5.  The Nuge is at an ugly looking -9 while Hall and Hemsky are an equally abysmal -7.  Simple math is we need more goals than our opponents. So, we have a plan. Now execute it!

Lines look to be unchanged for tonight.

PRE-GAME RANT

The last time we faced the Penguins was over 2 years ago, it coincided with RNH’s debut and first NHL goal. The Oilers were victorious that glorious night, but much has changed since then. It’s no secret that our back end has been having issues not unlike digesting a road side taco. It’s been pretty bad… Goalies have been letting in softies and the defence has been getting schooled. Our offence has been keeping us in most games, but it’s just not enough. Something has to give.

MacTavish has been on the phone but what’s really available out there for goalies right now? St. Louis does have a few options and with Lehner doing well in Ottawa, perhaps either he or Anderson could be had. It’s not going to be cheap and the Oilers will have to give up an asset. The copper and blue are sitting at 49 contracts, so maxing the roster this early in the season won’t be the best option. Ideally a player for player trade will go down, if there are any takers.

Another side story is Yakupov. Eakins has had him benched the last two games and it would appear he’s back in the lineup tonight. Eakins did great work with the youth while working with the Marlies, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here. He definitely squeezed more out of Kadri who was a bit of an enigma but has now turned things around enough to get himself a decent contract extension over there in the center of the universe. Yak is a great talent but if he’s not buying into Eakins system things aren’t going to work out.

Joensuu is hurting again so Jones has been recalled. Larsen is going back down to OKC.
