And the winner is...

And the winner is...

The winner of the 2012 NHL draft lottery is: THE EDMONTON OILERS

Here is the top 5 draft order:

1. Edmonton Oilers
2. Columbus Blue Jackets
3. Montreal Canadiens
4. New York Islanders
5. Toronto Maple Leafs

For the record, the word is that Nail Yakupov is the consensus number one. Word is that this draft is much weaker than previous drafts.

Here is the top 10 draft order that Bob McKenzie determined from his scout survey:

1. Nail Yakupov
2. Mikhail Grigorenko
3. Ryan Murray
4. Filip forsberg
5. Matt Dumba
6. Alex Galchenyuk
7. Jacob Trouba
8. Griffin Reinhart

10. Teuvo Teravainen

2012 CSS Final NHL Draft Rankings

Central Scouting has finalized their rankings for 2012.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Mikhail Grigorenko is no longer in the top 2 for North American skaters. Ryan Murray slots in at #2. Also possibly surprising is that Alex Galchenyuk is hanging in at #4 for North American skaters. This is a kid that I really, really like. I’ve seen some of his work, and he is an incredible player that could possibly disappear off radars because he missed nearly the whole year due to injury. The thing I like about him is he has a hell of a shot, but also is a physical player. He also plays center too. So really, this is the power forward up the middle that we might have been looking for.

I think many Oilers fans will be licking their chops at the idea of drafting Ryan Murray. Myself, I just don’t know. It sounds like he’s pretty good, but I also think it will take time before he’s really good enough to make a difference here. I could be way off base with my thoughts though.

Anyways, here are the rankings: Continue reading '2012 CSS Final Draft Rankings'»

Draft Day 2!

Keith was picked 54th overall...can we find a gem in the later rounds?

Here is a post for discussion regarding the second draft day.

On day one, the Oilers drafted Ryan Nugent-Hopkins @ #1 and Oskar Klefbom @ #19. And picked up Ryan Smyth from L.A. for Brule and a 4th (still not confirmed as of writing this, but TSN has it so I’ll consider it a done deal).

Oilers are looking to pick at 31, 62, 73 (from Flames – Staios trade), 91, 113 (from Pens – Garon trade), 121 and 181 (I think these are accurate, all from here).

Who will they pick? Saad, Rattie and Musil are all still available.

Update at 10:22am: At 31st the Oilers took Musil (D), at 62nd they took Perhonen (G) and with the 74th pick they selected Ewanyk (LW)…and supposedly the Smyth deal is on hold due to Brule’s health

Update at 10:35am: Oilers pick Dillon Simpson at 92nd (I guess all those numbers from above are off by one). Looks like this is Craig Simpson’s kid.

Update at 11:49am: Oilers picked Tobias Reider (F) at 114, and Martin Gernat (D) at 122

Update at 12:02pm: Oilers pick Frans Tuohimaa with their final pick at 182
