Looks like Ralph Krueger will be named head coach of the Oilers tomorrow morning, per Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun. Bob Stauffer mentioned that Krueger was the likely hire a while back as well.
Tomorrow it will be official, and we can put the “shouldn’t we have a coach in place before we go grovel at Justin Schultz’s knees?” comments to rest.
What do you guys think about this one? I’m OK with it… at least worth a shot. Sometimes I think there are a lot of overrated coaches out there. Go with what works. The Oilers sure shit the bed last year, but Krueger can at least take a lot of credit from taking our powerplay from the bottom to #3 overall. Now, hopefully he can do the same climb in the standings.
Edit: Krueger’s contract is for 3 years.

I have always liked Ralph Kreuger. It seems he’s also done wonders with our powerplay, which saw a ginormous leap in ability this past year. I kind of wonder if it’s “too soon” for him, but hey, why not? I wonder who he hires as his assistant coaches, however.

“Let’s face it, Scotty Bowman would not have done much better with the team Renney was given.”
- Jason Strudwick
I love it, and absolutely agree. I’m not at all a fan of Renney being fired because I don’t think he had been given a proper team at this point. Good luck to the next coach if Tambellini doesn’t completely fix this team’s glue players and goaltending.

Oilers will not renew Renney's contract
The Oilers have announced that they will not renew the contract of Tom Renney. Apparently the leading candidates currently for the position are: Todd Nelson (Oklahoma Barons), Brent Sutter (formerly of the Calgary Flames) and Derek Laxal (Oil Kings).

Two coaches were victims of firings today before many of us out west were even awake. The Washington Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau, and the Carolina Hurricanes have axed Paul Maurice. Dale Hunter will take over coaching duties in Washington, while Kirk Muller will head things in Carolina. Maurice was the youngest coach in NHL history to coach 1000 NHL games. The Hurricanes, however, sit 2nd last in the NHL right now, after missing the playoffs two years in a row under Maurice. The Capitals are still in a good spot, but evidently are attempting to stop the bleeding before it gets too serious.
