PRE-GAME RANT

Whatever happened to the Battle of Alberta? Seems like Calgary dropped out, and Vancouver made it about the Battle of Western Canada. There is some bad blood between these teams. The last game these two played was in pre-season. In that game, Dale Weise took a run at Taylor Hall, seemingly trying to decapitate him with a hit to the head. Weise was suspended 3 pre-season games for the hit. The other incident was from Zack Kassian. It doesn’t seem like a far fetched story that Kassian is still learning how to skate properly and keep his arms from flailing around like an infant… after all, he’s only in the NHL. Kassian broke Sam Gagner’s jaw when the brick-head missed a check... on the play he decided he’d swing his arm and stick as hard as he could towards Sam Gagner’s head. This was accidentally on purpose. I’m not so sure he meant to hit Gagner in the face, but you’d have to be beyond useless of a hockey player to really swing your arm like that after missing a check. I’m not even sure that Doug Glatt would have done that. Kassian will miss this game, as he was suspended for the remainder of the pre-season plus 5 regular season games. I’m sure the Canucks will miss him so much compared to the Oilers and Gagner. That’s the way it goes, I guess. Anyways, those stories set the mood for this one. Bad blood.

I don’t entirely blame the Canucks. This is the type of game I want to see the Oilers play, minus the stupid stick swinging by Kassian. The Oilers are missing that edge in the game. I’m hoping that Luke Gazdic brings some of that edge. In his first game, he had a goal and a decisive fight win vs. Chris Thorburn (who is no slouch). He looks like he can play hockey, plus he’s a very skilled fighter. As long as he can play hockey around a Mike Brown level (obviously better would be preferable) I’ll be happy. I think this 4th line will need to play an important game tonight. Going into Rogers Arena, Eakins won’t have last change, so it will be tough to get the right match-up for that line.

PRE-GAME RANT

I should caution that it’s just pre-season and they’ve only played 2 games, but let’s all snicker that the Canucks are sitting at the basement of the Pacific currently. OK, it’s not likely they’ll stay there very long. The Oilers and Canucks meet yet again, this time at Rexall. The Oilers won the last one pretty handily, by a score of 4-1 after what looked like the start of a repeat of the last game of the season. After Luongo was mercifully yanked, the came calmed down. Eriksson played a perfect period, stopping 9 of 9 shots he faced. You have to wonder if he’ll get the start tonight (or another backup) since the Oilers seem to have Luongo’s number, as of late.

The Oilers just tweeted out the lines.. they are below. I am really excited to see Jujhar Khaira in non-grainy, HD goodness. He is one of the more promising players coming up in the Oilers system. He’ll play with Yakupov on one side, which could make for a good threat, and Ryan Hamilton on the other side. The top line as of late looks to be the Hall centered line of Smyth-Hall-Hemsky. They haven’t been putting up much for points yet. That’s been a task filled by Jordan Eberle.. a guy who undeservedly had been oddly kicked around in several fan trade ideas this off-season.. wtf??). He’s got 4 points in 2 games so far. And how about Martin Marincin?? He has himself a couple goals already too, also in 2 games. As such, he’s been able to stick around past the first couple of cuts. There have been some interesting, unexpected things happening this off-season. Part of that has been the play of Jesse Joensuu (3 points in as many games, including 2 goals). He’s been earning himself some good reviews from most people.

As for Hall and Hemsky and Smyth.. the points aren’t there yet, but they will come. They are also playing the tough minutes / tough competition, allowing the other lines to put up their numbers. They’ve been doing this well too. Again, I caution that it’s only been a couple of games, but I love what I see of that line so far, even though I wonder how long Smyth can ride with Hemsky and Hall.

Tonight will be our first look at Anton Belov! I’m excited about that. He will play with Denis Grebeshkov. To steal MacT’s quote, that could be a pair that will be “dangerous at both ends of the ice”. It all depends on how honed Belov’s D game is, as I don’t think Grebeshkov is going to be the defensive guy for that pairing.

I am liking the lines I’ve seen so far. I think if I had to put a top 9 together for the opener, I’d go with:
Smyth-Hall-Hemsky
Perron-Gagner-Eberle
Joensuu-Gordon-Yakupov

I will likely be around for game day chat tongiht if anyone else shows up!

PRE-GAME RANT

Well, the season hasn’t even started yet so there’s not a whole lot to go on for a blurb but I’ll give it a go. Oilers(1-1-1) and Canucks(0-1) do battle tonight on SNET-W. No cursing at the streaming capabilities of the Oilers site tonight!

So far in the preseason the Oilers split wins with a split squad versus the Flames and engineered a comeback in Winnipeg that fell just short.

A number of players(17) have been re-assigned/cut since then but they are still far from the final roster.

Canucks will start Luongo tonight and the Sedins will be in the lineup as well. Sadly Torts will be the eye in the sky and not entertaining us on the bench.

Oilers will have a closer to NHL roster for the game with a few goons on the fourth so it could be an entertaining one to watch.

PRE-GAME RANT

So it turns out my powers of prediction are extremely weak. Every sign pointed to the Oilers dying to the hands of the Wild, without much of a fight put up. In reality, it didn’t take much of a fight to kick the crap out of them on the scoreboard. I have to ask.. what the hell was up with Zach Parise kicking at Corey Potter (blade first)? It will go unpunished, I’m sure, but I don’t think it should be. Of course if it was Matt Cooke doing the kicking, he’d be banned from hockey for life. For Parise… it won’t even be reviewed. It all happened pretty quick and wasn’t a big kick or anything, but in light of the Karlsson incident, you’d think the NHL would step in. Anyways, judge for yourself. Anyways, I thought Parise deserved to have his ass beat, but somehow it turned into the Wild pushing Potter around after that. On a later shift, both Mike Rupp and Zenon Konopka went after him. I’m not sure why.. I missed a lot of this one, so I’m not sure if something happened before, or what. But really, this is sign number 1 that MacTavish needs some tougher players (that can play) in the lineup. I think he knows this too. He pointed to the Habs as an example to follow, and I think he recognized Brandon Prust as a good example of what to look for. We do have Mike Brown for that though, and he fills that role pretty well.. but I think we could use some guys like a prime Ethan Moreau (meaning, Moreau when he was a good player) and a Jason Smith type.

On to to tonight’s game… I’m pulling for a win, but I feel that I need to predict an awful loss, due to superstition (since my 3-0 Wild prediction last night turned into a 6-1 Oilers win). So uhm… 5-0 Vancouver.

PRE-GAME RANT

Roberto would like you to know that his contract sucks. That’s why he wasn’t traded. Good point, and I’m in full agreement. Pretty honest words from Lou though. He’s endeared himself to fans though lately with his @strombone1 account on Twitter. He’s a pretty funny guy and that’s probably the only thing keeping him somewhat sane these days, amidst all the pressure. Not sure if he starts or if it will be Schneider. His team will have to look past that negativity though.

The Oilers.. wow.. smoked Calgary good last night. It’s about time. It’s nice for our team to not only shut up Flames fans in our building, but to overtake their building with cheers for Oilers goals. The Flames are in for some really painful times though. This is just the start. I want to caution that we beat up on a really bad team though. But I also want to give some credit, cause in the past, the Oilers wouldn’t have showed up at all for that kind of game. I find they typically put their best effort in vs. the tougher teams and coast by against the bottom feeders. They started off looking like that team, early on, when Calgary got a 2-0. However, the Oilers completely turned things around. After the first goal, it was like someone hit them with a defibrillator.

Paajarvi might miss this one. If he does, expect Smyth to play in his place, and Lander to be called up to center line 4. New guy Jerred Smithson is not ready to play yet, as his wife is ready to have a baby, if she hasn’t yet. Other than that, I don’t suspect there will be any lineup changes. I’d really like to see Fistric or Peckham in for the more physical opponents, but doesn’t look like that will happen.
