PRE-GAME RANT
Oilers. Jackets. Battle of two big losers again, if I can put on my Mike Cammalleri hat for a moment. The Oilers have a bad habit of disappearing against bottom feeders. Hopefully after the big 5-0 loss versus 29th place Anaheim (at least at the time), the Oilers will be motivated not to have a new asshole torn by their boss again.
Taylor Hall, Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky seem to have some magic going. Since the Nuge’s injury (which united the trio), Hall has had 4 goals, 1 assist in 6 games. Gagner has had 1 goals, 3 assists in that span. Hemsky has had 1 goal, 4 assists in that span. While those numbers aren’t superbly good, Hall has generated 27 shots, Gagner 12, and Hemsky 15 in that span. Hall is definitely giving his all to drag this team out of the depths of last place. Hemsky and Gagner have each played a pretty good game too. Between the three of them, they’ve accounted for about a third of this team’s shots in that 6 game span. I know I’d also recently in one of the games, 10 offensive chances were generated.. 6 by Hall, 4 by Hemsky. It’s obvious who is doing their part here… this team needs some other players to stand up though.
No word on lines, but I assume that Khabi will get this game tonight, since Dubnyk doesn’t seem to get consecutive games ever. He played pretty decently against the Kings though, so who knows.
Edit: Dubnyk does in fact start! No changes to the lineup at all.

PRE-GAME RANT
The Oilers face the Blue Jackets tonight and for the first time this season. The Jackets have struggled almost all year, but they’ve shown a pulse in their last half-dozen-ish games.
In news recently for the Blue Jackets is Allan Walsh’s ripping of Columbus Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel for his handling of Derick Brassard. Walsh is Brassard’s agent and has been very vocal in the past for other clients as well too. Some chatter out there suggests that the Oilers should take a crack at trading for him, to which I’ll say “no, thank you”. Too much money, too long a term, and nowhere near good enough production even if he did have a hot rookie year.
This one should be a game that the Oilers power through fairly handily, but we all know how those “easy” games can go. Hopefully the Oilers take the Blue Jackets more seriously than the Flames did last night! The Oilers are currently sitting in 11th in the conference, but are right in the mix. Every win is important from here on out.
Doobie starts tonight.

Is CBJ's #8 up for grabs?
OK, a new Lowetide article is up that mentions news about the Columbus Blue Jackets cleaning up their scouting staff. Don Boyd (Assistant GM, dubbed “amateur scouting guru” by the article) and Bob Strumm (Pro Scouting Director) were fired. Lowetide mentions that with this happening so close to the draft, you have to wonder if this fuels the rumor even more of their 8th overall pick being available. Of course, the Oilers and Howson have their history, and he’s generally been a willing dance partner with us.
It wouldn’t come easy, but we have some assets that we are looking to move. Tambellini could take a quantum leap in Continue reading 'Blue Jackets scout staff firings… 8th overall pick in play? / Jeff Carter Available?'»

PRE-GAME RANT
The Oilers are officially dead last in the league again (not sure if this was just after last night though). Today they’ll face the 2nd last place team in the West, the Columbus Blue Jackets. The season is absolutely out of hand yet again, as the Oilers can’t seem to win even when they put up a good effort like they did last night. They are currently on pace for an even worse year than last year. That said, I’m not worried about this team, and I don’t think many of you are either… we knew it would be bad.
Early report is that Dustin Penner should be back for this one (flu).
I’m not even sure what to predict for this one. The Oilers have to win eventually though, right? Prediction: 4-3 Oilers.

PRE-GAME RANT
The Oilers’ roller coaster is taking us back down again. They have lost 3 of their last 4, albeit one of them in the shootout. The one game they did win (against Tampa Bay), they didn’t have much business winning, but thanks to some heroics by Khabi, they were able to stay in the game long enough for Omark to add to the list of #danellisproblems. By some miracle, the Oilers are 6-3-1 in their last 10, while the Blue Jackets are 2-5-1 in their last 10.
Hall seems to be flying high. As one critic here would likely point out, he’s made his share of mistakes, but Renney is doing a great job of loosening the reigns, and this has done wonders for his creativity. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but in that brutal 4-1 loss to the Leafs, Mr. Hall accounted for a third of the Oilers’ shots (8 shots)! He earned the third star and seems to be doing everything in his power to carry this team in the absence of Horcoff and Hemsky. He’s not alone, but there are definitely quite a few passengers as of late, as Tom Renney would say.
Anyways, there is a chance we’ll see Taylor Hall playing the PK now, according to a couple of sources. I’ve often wondered why they haven’t given him much opportunity yet. I assumed it was because in one of the games he did PK on, he circled back in the neutral zone and played keepaway for a bit to shed more time off the clock. I thought maybe perhaps the coach thought it was too risky, and he should have “dumped it in the corner”, like linemate Jordan Eberle jokingly suggested he should have done on his first NHL goal. Anyways, it will be nice if he does get some PK time, as the Oilers stupid-penalty parade is getting more popular these days, keeping Hall off the ice.
Well, I think this one is winnable. Renney seems to be decent at bringing the team back on track. So I’ll predict a 3-2 (SO) win for the home team.
