PRE-GAME RANT

Alright, the ship hasn’t been righted, but there is a blue spot in the sky amidst this storm of sorrow. It’s a very small spot, but it’s there. Coming off the heels of a victory, yes that’s right we won a game, the Oilers are playing host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Oilers last played Saturday night against the Flames and didn’t turn up the heat until late in the game for a come from behind victory. Hopefully it’s a turning point for the team’s waning confidence but it’s the Flames… A team many predicted to finish dead last this season.

The Blue Jackets are another winnable game, but it all depends on who shows up. Exciting as 3rd period comebacks are, it’s much easier to play with a lead. I’m sure the fans would love to see a home victory. It’s been a long time. Historically we have owned them though(29-10-8) so tonight could be that home win everyone is pining for.

Bryzgalov will be in the lineup tonight sporting #80. He’ll have to settle for a front row seat tough, Dubnyk will get the start. Coach Eakins has been happy with his play of late and will roll with him until Dubs convinces him otherwise. Another familiar face will be back on the ice tonight. Justin Schultz is returning from a groin injury and will be paired with Belov.

LaBarbera was waived to make room for Bryzgalov and has cleared. Not much change to the lines from Saturday aside from Larsen rotating out to make room for Justin Schultz.

PRE-GAME RANT

So the Oilers are going back to a couple more tried and true lines tonight. The first one is the “kid line”. That line got 3 goals in the game vs. the Blues, so why not? The other line is Paajarvi-Gagner-Hemsky. Gagner’s been magic with anyone he’s played with, but he definitely plays quite well with Hemsky. Of course, Paajarvi has had best results playing with Gagner too.

Khabibulin will get the start tonight after shutting out the Blues in what sounded like a really good performance. I still haven’t been able to watch it on PVR yet, but probably will later… maybe when the playoffs are on ;)

So non-Oiler talk now. Jarome Iginla got traded to the Boston Brui… no wait.. to the Pittsburgh Penguins, last night. Sounds like Iggy was very close to being a Bruin, however. It looks to me like the Flames didn’t get very good value in the Pens trade, although it was maybe a step up from what the Bruins were offering. They’ll get a very late 1st round pick, and 2 college prospects (forwards). The prospects don’t project too high, although one of them has soms pretty decent size, and the other is leading his team in scoring, so who knows there. All I can say though is thank God Iggy isn’t a Flame anymore.. I can cheer for him finally. I’ve always liked and respected him, much like many Flames fans had a respect for guys like Ryan Smyth. Pittsburgh was crazy good already without the add. Now they’re just “I fucking hate you guys” good. It will be interesting to see if Iginla re-signs there though. I’d imagine the incentive is there to do it.

PRE-GAME RANT

Well, this is the first game for Mike Brown in an Oilers uniform. It seems that most of the Oilers fans out there hate this deal, and many of the Oilers media seem to back this deal. Not to say which one is actually wrong here. I approach this one the same way I approach any deal.. open minded and optimistic, especially when we don’t give up much for one. Yes, yes, any pick can be a hit, but a 4th rounder for us is most likely to bust. The only good 4th rounder we’ve drafted in the last 20 years with proven success is Shawn Horcoff (there is Linus Omark too, but I don’t consider him proven). Of course we still have question marks for the recent picks. Anyways, I think the Oilers look flat too many nights and need to inject some give a damn in the line up. Will one guy make a difference though? Probably not, unless he’s Sid Crosby caliber (which obviously he isn’t). So I don’t expect a whole lot, but I still think it’s a step in the right direction and could help rejuvenate some life into dead souls when we’re stinking it up vs. bottom feeders that we should be killing. I do understand the worries people have, but I think the risk is low. I’ll take a shot that a piece could help us out over the 5% shot at the next Horcoff. Obviously I jest, as our previous scouting department was piss poor, as we all know, so that will unfairly make a 4th rounder look poorer than it is. But again, I think it’s a step in the right direction, and this mystery pick wouldn’t be making any impact for several years. I’m sure the internet will dig this up in 2019 and laugh at this post when Toronto drafts the next Jamie Benn with our pick.

So the lines are rebuffed again. Good to see Hall back. He’ll play with Nuge and Hemsky. Paajarvi gets more time with Gagner and Eberle. I mentioned last GDT that Paajarvi’s early success came with Gagner and Omark, so I still think this could pay dividends. Yakupov and Jones will get caught in the Belanger-triangle. Brown and Eager will be the bookends for a Smytty-centered energy line… or holy-fucking shit, stop taking dumb penalties line. TBD.

PRE-GAME RANT

Another shake up on the lines is expected today… even the defensive lines which have remained almost constant, except for the bottom pairing. The Schultz brothers (jokes) continue to play together, however.

Ryan Whitney finds himself a scratch again today. Mark Fistric slots back in and will play with Ladislav Smid. This is interesting. Smid and Fistric should make a true shut down pairing, and potentially a very tough one. Think “twin towers” (Steve Smith and Jeff Beukeboom), but a smaller version. These guys should make a big impact together, pardon the pun.

Corey Potter and Jeff Petry will pair up together, and I have to be honest, I’m Continue reading 'Oilers 3, Blue Jackets 1 – Game 12 – 2013-02-10 @ 4:00 PM MST – SNETW'»

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers are finding ways to win games again. It’s great to see. Also great to see is that the Oilers are clawing their way up the standings. No, they haven’t moved from 29th, but they are nearly 28th now, and could be tied for 27th after today. They sit 6 points behind a big 4-way tie for 22nd, and 3 points behind Minnesota in 26th. It’s time to put the thoughts of high draft picks well behind us and just aim for an improvement in the standings. I think this year has already been a big improvement, even though 29th place doesn’t indicate that at all. We’re the 2nd best PP, the 18th PK, and I haven’t seen any games this year (unlike previous years) where we’ve been smoked and embarrassed. This is a small improvement to cling on, and a sad state of affairs when you consider it good when we’re not getting lambasted. But hey, an improvement is an improvement. Add to that, the Oilers are 12-10-4 since the All Star Break. Not a giant feat, but that would be a 0.538 point percentage which would be good for 21st place by today’s standards if they kept that pace all year. I suppose I’m grasping at straws here, but I think we’re a team closer to being a real team and it has a lot to do with solidifying our back end more. If this team can find out how to score at even strength (i.e. get some scoring out of the likes of Hemsky and co.), we’ll be a much better team in 2012-13. But, as usual, I could be dreaming.

Anyways, no line up announced yet, so I’m just going to post last night’s line up here again. Oh, one change. Chris Vande Velde was recalled yesterday because Shawn Horcoff hurt his back on a faceoff in the last game. So I assume he’ll be in for this game this afternoon, possibly even right in Horcoff’s place. I missed that game too, due to the Oil Kings, but watched the goals and shootout. Dubnyk was pretty superb in the shootout. I assume he’ll be in today too.
EDIT: Confirmed by #NHL_Oilers tweet, Dubnyk will start.

Go Oil! Keep winning.
