Let's break some ground!!!
Thought I’d peruse the internets and condense what’s beeing said regarding the arena vote that passed last night. Read on for the details.
An 8-5 council vote passed last night based on a 17 part motion passed in April by the city regarding it’s desires for the project.
- Maximum construction cost: $450 million
- $100 million – Daryl Katz
- $125 million – ticket fee
- $125 million – taxes/city funds
- $100 million – provincial/federal funding (not established)
The two sides will jointly work on a design. Not sure if one has absolute power or if an agreement must be made.
The city will own the 18,500-seat building
Katz will operate it, receiving all the revenues and covering all the costs.
Any cash made from naming rights go to Katz.
35 year agreement.

Ne pas de boo
Save your boos
Well, on my plane ride home from Vegas, I learned that the snot-nosed kid who snubbed Edmonton is back in town. I’m sure many of you are planning on booing/heckling the crap out of him, but I say “save your boos.”
Comrie did screw up. He’s admitted to it though: “I’ve come out and said I didn’t handle it properly. I was young. I made mistakes and I’ve learned a lot.” Even Lowe admitted to making a mistake in how he handled it. I don’t have the exact quote, but he did apologize for trying to extort the $2.5M in bonus money out of Comrie. These two sides have obviously put things behind them, and now it’s time for the fans too. Comrie has also matured quite a bit in the 6 years since he’s been here. He also has never said one bad thing about the fans here (unlike that venomous snake, Chris Pronger) while he was here and even after he was chased out of town. Good luck parking in this mofo.
* – UPDATE: Dan Tencer says confirmation of this sale is a bit pre-mature. The Katz Group has agreed to purchase the land, however the transaction is not finalized yet.
The Edmonton Sun has an article in which they update us on the latest goings on with the proposed new arena for the Edmonton Oilers. * – For those of you that missed it, the Katz group recently bought the 3 square block area around the Baccarat Casino. Unless Daryl Katz plans on building a ginormous Rexall Drugs, this will be the site of the new arenas. Arenas? Yes, plural. Continue reading 'Latest dirt on the proposed arena(s)'»
