Smid traded to dirty Flames, Bryzgalov signed

By , November 8, 2013 6:04 pm

Hey folks.. I must keep this short, as I am still away in Vegas… but I wanted to quickly whip up a post on today’s events.

Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy to the Calgary Flames for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit. First off, I absolutely love Laurent Brossoit. Steve-O, Trogdor and I got to see a lot of him here in Edmonton for the Oil Kings, and he is a terrific goaltender. He’s currently playing in the ECHL for Alaska where he has played 2 (and a smidge) games, both of them shutouts. He played in a 3rd for 6 minutes and didn’t allow any goals, so he has currently not allowed a goal in 126 minutes. The ECHL isn’t exactly the greatest league, but it’s the success you want to hear about for a goalie in the system. He is definitely an upgrade on Roy.

Roman Horak, all I can do is read stats, for the most part. He’s a 2-way centreman. His numbers aren’t what I consider too stellar (22 years old, 82GP, 5 goals, 13 assists). I’ll have to wait and see to judge that one.

As all the media caught onto right away, this trade seemed to be a salary dump so they could make the next move, signing Ilya Bryzgalov. Now, I actually like this. Bryzgalov is a nut, but aside from in Philly, where everyone sucks in goal, Bryzgalov had been a good goaltender in his career. I am curious to know the details of the contract. Apparently Smid has to pass a physical to complete the deal before Bryzy will be officially signed. Some part of me hopes that he fails the physical and is stuck with the Oilers, because I absolutely love Smid. I like Craig MacTavish a lot as GM, but I can’t get behind turning all your blueline (nearly) into a bunch of offensive minded players that are unaware of how to take care of their own end of the rink. I guess that duty will fall to Nick Schultz and Andrew Ference.

I’m not sure just yet how much I like this deal, but I sure like it a lot more than just about any deal that involves Jordan Eberle.

PRE-GAME RANT

Tonight the Oilers will host the Detroit Red Wings. Looks like the Wings will provide backup Petr Mrazek in “Guaranteed Win Night”. According to the Oilers’ site, the Wings are 6-0-5 in their last 11 visits to Rexall. At first glance, that’s pretty terrible. The Oilers haven’t recorded a single regulation win in any of those visits.. however they do have 5 non-regulation wins to Detroit’s 6 wins. At this point, we don’t give a damn if points are conceded to the Wings, do we?

Ryan Hamilton will slot in tonight, he’ll play on the wing with Arcobello, with Gordon centering that unit. Philip Larsen is in for Justin Schultz (apparently he has both a groin AND a rib injury of some sort). Bachman gets the start tonight.

Enjoy the game…

PRE-GAME RANT

Gagner makes his triumphant return to the line up tonight. Don’t expect an immediate impact as he’s been sidelined for quite some time due to Kassian’s reckless stick in the pre-season. Ideally it will provide a team wide lift though.

Tonight is their first home game in awhile aside from the Caps game, but this one has the potential to feel like a road game. Someone turned off the lights and the cockroaches are coming out decorated in Leafs apparel and attempting to take over Rexall. Much like any original 6 team being in town. Getting early momentum is key.

Bachman will be tending the net tonight and hopefully won’t have to turn away near as many shots as he did last game in a 47 save performance losing eventually in a shootout to the Kings. The Leafs don’t shoot as often, but when they do, they’ve been making the best of it with what is currently 3rd ranking in league shooting percentage behind St. Louis and Tampa Bay.

With Gagner back on the ice, the Oilers top line gets shuffled once more. He’ll be centering Yakupov and Eberle. Yakupov finally capitalized on his first goal of the season one timing a tough angled rebound behind Quick. Ideally it’s the first step to restoring his mojo. He also played a good team game so he might finally be coming around to Eakins system.

The Oilers had some terribly timed penalties last game so looking for a more disciplined performance. The Leafs being a high percentage team, there’s no need to make things easier on them.
