Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy to the Calgary Flames for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit. First off, I absolutely love Laurent Brossoit. Steve-O, Trogdor and I got to see a lot of him here in Edmonton for the Oil Kings, and he is a terrific goaltender. He’s currently playing in the ECHL for Alaska where he has played 2 (and a smidge) games, both of them shutouts. He played in a 3rd for 6 minutes and didn’t allow any goals, so he has currently not allowed a goal in 126 minutes. The ECHL isn’t exactly the greatest league, but it’s the success you want to hear about for a goalie in the system. He is definitely an upgrade on Roy.
Roman Horak, all I can do is read stats, for the most part. He’s a 2-way centreman. His numbers aren’t what I consider too stellar (22 years old, 82GP, 5 goals, 13 assists). I’ll have to wait and see to judge that one.
As all the media caught onto right away, this trade seemed to be a salary dump so they could make the next move, signing Ilya Bryzgalov. Now, I actually like this. Bryzgalov is a nut, but aside from in Philly, where everyone sucks in goal, Bryzgalov had been a good goaltender in his career. I am curious to know the details of the contract. Apparently Smid has to pass a physical to complete the deal before Bryzy will be officially signed. Some part of me hopes that he fails the physical and is stuck with the Oilers, because I absolutely love Smid. I like Craig MacTavish a lot as GM, but I can’t get behind turning all your blueline (nearly) into a bunch of offensive minded players that are unaware of how to take care of their own end of the rink. I guess that duty will fall to Nick Schultz and Andrew Ference.
I’m not sure just yet how much I like this deal, but I sure like it a lot more than just about any deal that involves Jordan Eberle.
