rumor out there that the oilers are trying to move souray, staios, moreau, pisani, comrie, o’sullivan, nilsson and pouliot for picks and prospects to make room for eberle svensson and out pick. we knew that. now there are rumors on a oilers thought of giving kovy 10+ million to come to edmonton.
Kovalchuk-Gagner-Hemsky
Penner-Hall/Seguin-Eberle
Svensson-Horcoff-Brule
Stortini-Potulny-JFJ
Vishnovsky-Smid
Strudwick-Gilbert
Peckham-Plante
Chorney
Khabibulin
JDD
I think we are weak on the back end,but could flip a forward for a defender. These are rumors, so take them with a grain of salt.
What do you guys think?
By NorwegianOiler, February 9, 2010 @ 1:01 pm NorwegianOiler(Quote)
Cute dreams Boston. I wish it was like that
Well, almost, having Strudwick as a top 6 guy isn’t really going to cut it, nor having Peckham/Plante together for a season.
But, the ‘rumours’ which may or may not have been pulled out of that man’s tushy/hiney/bum, seem strangely like what I’d move myself…or try to…
By Racki, February 9, 2010 @ 1:29 pm Racki(Quote)
I honestly can no longer take our team seriously so long as certain guys are still on the roster.. won’t mention names though
But man.. a few have to go seeing as how there are guys willing to do a better job that come at a cheap price.
And forget Kovalchuk until this team is on its feet again. I’d say something like that (well, it wouldn’t be Kovalchuk though) could be a deadline move if we suddenly show a pulse next year.

lol, Racki, you have daily ad revenue?
and BostonOiler, NorwegianOiler, the crazy Russians and myself account for 4.2% of your traffic history? that’s pretty high, I guess we come here too much. :p
By Racki, February 12, 2010 @ 8:53 am Racki(Quote)
No, thats what they estimate my revenue would be if I had ads here (which I don’t, as you probably have noticed
). As for Russians, I assume they’re spammers. I have always noticed a lot of traffic from them, and a lot of spam I get is from those commie scumbags (just kidding… I’m actually of Russian descent, myself).

According to Darren Dreger’s twitter, the Ottawa Senators have placed Jonathan Cheechoo on waivers. Should we try and grab him? Maybe on re-entry waivers? I think he has one more year left on his contract after this season. I’d rather have Cheechoo than Moreau.
By Racki, February 12, 2010 @ 11:40 am Racki(Quote)
Interesting how he hit waivers.. wow, what a difference between how he started his career, hey? Former 50 goal scorer.. now on waivers at the age of 29. His production really has hit rock bottom. I’d say on re-entry waivers, it would be worth a shot. But not yet.

Cam Barker traded to the Wild for Kim Johnnson and Nick Leddy! Sharks deal Shelley to the Rangers for a pick! So many deals, none for the Oilers.
By Racki, February 12, 2010 @ 2:00 pm Racki(Quote)
Are you surprised?
Tencer’s twitter said earlier that there should be no Oiler deals today from what he was hearing. Boooo-fricken-urns.
By Mr.Majestyk, February 12, 2010 @ 2:12 pm Mr.Majestyk(Quote)
Sounds like the Panthers intend to clean house. They won’t be making moves till after the break. Perhaps they already have some trades lined up.

agreed.

Love the Olympic header Racki, I just hope we do better than we did with the cauldron lighting!
By Racki, February 13, 2010 @ 10:23 pm Racki(Quote)
Oh man, that was horrible hey? it looked pretty awkward… all (5?) of the torch bearers standing there.. waiting… and waiting.. nothing happening.. waiiiting. I’m pretty sure everyone was wondering what the heck was going on. Thankfully the CTV guy mentioned it was that whole torch art thing was stuck. Then of course, only part goes up.. doh.
Great to see Gretzky light the outdoor torch though!
Anyways, on another note… and 2 day old news now, but apparently the Blue Jackets might be interested in Tom Gilbert. I’m not so sure trading him for Huselius would be a good idea though. Don’t get me wrong, I like Huselius, but I don’t think he fits into the mold of the team right now, and his salary is pretty high.
By Bostonoiler, February 15, 2010 @ 12:14 am Bostonoiler(Quote)
“I was very aware of it…it could be my last game here…I really wanted to play well and make sure that if things do happen I am moved I go out on a positive.”
- Ethan Moreau on the possibility of being traded during the Olympic break
Moreau knows he very well could be gone. At least he scored a goal in what is likely his last game as an Oilers.
Oh and LETS GO USA!!!!!!!
By NorwegianOiler, February 15, 2010 @ 3:37 am NorwegianOiler(Quote)
On Gilbert for Huselius – if these are the trades available to Tambellini is quite clearly understand why nothing has been done so far. It sounds incredible, but we’d become older AND softer with that deal.
By Racki, February 15, 2010 @ 8:05 am Racki(Quote)
Agreed, N.O.. Trading Gilbert for Huselius would be making a trade for the sake of making a trade. I like him, but he’s not a guy we need here for the rebuild.

Here’s the interview with Tambellini they showed during last night’s PPV.
By gr8one, February 15, 2010 @ 12:37 pm gr8one(Quote)
thanks for the vid Racki, I had looked for it unsuccessfully last night.
By NorwegianOiler, February 15, 2010 @ 2:05 pm NorwegianOiler(Quote)
Tambellini is the master of the rhetorical self-addressing/self-answered question. “Am I going to assess the team? Yes I am”
Moreau seemed ambivalent in the post-game interview, happy with his performance, but seemed a bit defeated at the prospect of being traded – though I am sure he’d welcome it on some levels.

At practice today, Grebeshkov was on the top Russian line, according to Bob McKenzie:
Ovechkin-Datsyuk-Semin
Grebeshkov-Korneev
Doesn’t mean much, but that would sure be great to see him stay there. I don’t think that’s what is going to happen though. I’d be surprised if he’s in the top 4 unless Markov’s not healthy enough to play.
By Haboiler, February 15, 2010 @ 9:30 pm Haboiler(Quote)
The Russians seem to be going back to their 1970′s roots going with 4 5 man units rather than the traditional 13/7 lineup. Just like the old KLM line with Fetisov and I believe Kasatonov??
Those two top 6 lines for the Russians are sick! Iggy on the 4th line for Canada, a little surprising but I would bet that if Bergeron doesn’t excel that he will move to the 13th forward in a hurry.

Here’s your out Tambi, and you don’t even have to admit you made a mistake signing an aging, injury-prone goalie to a long term contract! There’s a professional conduct clause in the SPC, see if you can use it, terminate his contract, say good-bye, break the law on someone else’s team, and sign/trade for a young guy ready to be a starter (i.e. Halak) who fits a rebuild.
By gr8one, February 17, 2010 @ 3:32 pm gr8one(Quote)

By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 3:49 pm Racki(Quote)
oh man, I wish. But I have my doubts that would happen. But pleeeeease let it happen. I wonder why he asked for a blood test…
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 3:52 pm Racki(Quote)
Oilers Nation has a bit more info.. they contacted Lowe, he’s just found out about it too recently. Neither Khabibulin or his agent informed the Oilers of this happening, so Lowe didn’t sound too happy about that. But they’re (the Oilers) not really going to say anything until they’ve been able to talk to Khabi first.
By Haboiler, February 17, 2010 @ 3:56 pm Haboiler(Quote)
Its only a misdemeanor so probably not enough to break his contract unfortunately, but it would be a nice way to end this charade. I was in support when they first signed him but after this years injuries and now rehabbing his back drunk in his ferrari…. sorry… next…. find a way to get rid of him or convince him to retire and hire him as a consultant for Rexall. Get him off our team.
By LateNightOilFan, February 17, 2010 @ 4:01 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Well presuming he is on meds for his rehab from back surgery maybe he thought a blood test would be able to show that the alcohol he admitted he consumed (that he shouldn’t have consumed while on meds), had more of an impact on his system when combined with the meds.
Does that make sense?
He’s got a lot of explaining to do…
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 4:03 pm Racki(Quote)
If he retires, we’re still screwed with the cap hit (thus why that contract was the most retarded one made). I don’t blame Khabibulin for the contract though. Why? If someone offers you that kind of money and term, you’d jump at it. As far as the driving incident, that was obviously dumb… but nothing to do with his bad back though, so I’d keep the two of those separated. Obviously he shouldn’t be driving around town drunk. However, driving a Ferrari (albeit drunk) with a bad back is a significantly easier and far less painful task to perform than playing 60 minutes of hockey with a bad back.
So yah, want the contract gone all you want (which I definitely do), but I wouldn’t be critical of him for drinking or for driving his car when you expect him to be in bed 24/7. Now doing the two together, obviously that was beyond stupid. But unrelated to the back issue, is what I’m getting at
(just reading between the lines a bit with the “now rehabbing his back drunk in his ferrari” comment).
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 4:09 pm Racki(Quote)
Honest officer, it wasn’t the glass of wine that did it, it was the glass of wine plus 10 pain pills I took that are labelled “do not operate heavy machinery / do not mix with alcohol”. I’m not a drunk, I just don’t follow instructions well!
By LateNightOilFan, February 17, 2010 @ 4:10 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Here’s the clause – I don’t even think the type of charge/conviction matters – it’s more of a general ‘conduct unbecoming a professional’ type of thing. Now it’s not like this hasn’t happened before (i.e. the Staal brothers a couple summers ago, Kane this past summer) but they are all young players whom a team would be more likely to go to bat for. If the Oilers want to push this to get rid of him they might have a case.
Per section 2(e) of the Standard Players Contract in the CBA
The Player further agrees, to conduct himself on and off the rink according to the highest standards of honesty, morality, fair play and sportsmanship, and to refrain from conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey generally.
And section 14 deals with terminating the SPC if the player materially breaches the terms of the contract.
edit – that said, the Oilers will probably support him, you know, because he has a ring.
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 4:14 pm Racki(Quote)
LNOF: Well, he’s an elite goaltender, and all…
Edit: Seriously though, while DUI is obviously a pretty serious offense, the NHLPA are a pretty tight group and I wonder what kind of affect it would have with player relations if we turfed “Rekhabi” instead of sticking through it with him, especially since this is the first time it’s happened.
By LateNightOilFan, February 17, 2010 @ 4:19 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Ha, yeah. I prefer the non-elite capable of elite stretches, hard working, competitive to the max, just as effective, truck driving, sober goalies I guess!
By LateNightOilFan, February 17, 2010 @ 4:24 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Oh it could get very complicated, that’s for sure. It puts everyone trying to defend him (the Oilers or the NHLPA) in a precarious position.
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 4:28 pm Racki(Quote)
As much as I hate to say it, I think it looks better on the organization (by far) if they stick through it and get any help he needs (if he needs any) than it does to cut up the contract. I’m trying to think what happened with guys like Fleury, et al. I don’t recall their teams shredding the contract and cutting these guys, but I definitely could be wrong.
But ideally though, if they can get out that way, I wouldn’t complain!
By LateNightOilFan, February 17, 2010 @ 4:46 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
The NHL suspended Fleury for violating its substance and abuse program. It was his second suspension and ended his career. At the time he had just finished year 1 of a 2 year contract with the Hawks. They had waived him during that year (which is in the CBA section covering contract terminations due to breach of conditions) but no one claimed him and he finished the year with them. The NHL suspended him in the off-season. I don’t know if the Hawks were on the hook for the second year of his contract or not. They may not have been since they waived him per procedure but no one took him (assuming that was part of the old CBA, I’m looking at the new CBA).
Anyway, we’ll see what happens. I’m willing to bet absolutely nothing!
However, I bet Lowe is pretty pissed neither Khabi or his agent notified the Oilers. That’s not in Khabi’s favour.

Looks like my image still holds true. I’ve never really liked Khabi there was always something a little off with him. Of course he isn’t the first guy to do something like this and it’s not just because of his DUI but he always seemed a little off to me.
Anyways, we’ve certainly tarnished whatever image we had with our “History” on this team. We are creating a new type of “History” but it’s not a very good path. This season has been a debacle for us, injury, statistics/standings, bad media (with Calgary restaurant/Khabi DUI), I guess it can only go up from here. There are positives too but man, what a season.
By Racki, February 17, 2010 @ 6:39 pm Racki(Quote)
So in other news… Women’s Olympic Hockey – should they pull the plug on it for a bit? There’s really two teams in the whole thing that are competitive – Canada and USA. As Dan Tencer put it, Canada won by 12 goals against the 3rd best nation in Women’s hockey today (Sweden). Is this just a free medal for Canada, USA and even Sweden? I can see the argument for it.
I think its great that the Canadian team is dominant, but I’d like to see other teams stand a chance to win gold besides them and USA. It would seem that no other countries really have the interest in it just yet… how can they pick it up?
By Trogdor, February 17, 2010 @ 7:13 pm Trogdor(Quote)
A friend of mine suggested doing the opposite. Since in other sports there are multiple entrants, why not have Canadian and US “B” teams. They’d be more competitive than some of the other countries and it’s an event that we or the US could possibly sweep the podium in.
I think pulling the plug on it will do nothing for the other countries in catching up. It’s an international showcase which generates interest with the youth.
My niece is hellbent on getting into moguls now.
By Haboiler, February 17, 2010 @ 7:33 pm Haboiler(Quote)
Back to my previous post about Khabby I wasn’t trying to bring the two together but its frustrating when you have a 37 yr old pro who is rehabbing from back surgery and is out with questionable judgement breaking the law. If he does retire prior to July 1, we are in fact off the hook according to the CBA as he is retiring in Year 1 of the SPC.
As far as womens olympics, it is tough when the 3rd best womens team is getting crushed by 12 goals. But how do they get the competition better? HArd to figure that one out…
