Racki: Jesus.. I would hope this isn’t something that is true, but why would someone lie about abuse on their daughter, especially:http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Edmonton/2010/09/08/15286831.html

I hope its all false, I have a hard time believing that.

Yeah I just saw this on Global. It sounds like devious tactics in a divorce case. I hope none of this is true for everyone’s sake involved.

You just really never know. I know some women are pretty fucked up and would make up stories of abuse on themselves… abuse on their daughter seems a tough thing to fake, depending on her age though.

But whatever the case, I do hope it’s not true, as it takes a “special” person to do that.

Yeah, but for all we know this (extreme speculation here, but just an example of how this could be waaaaaaaaay overblown) could have been an argument where Smith and his wife were screaming it out and he locked her in the bedroom bathroom until she shut up. Kid got involved and he locked her in her room whilst excorting her there he grabbed her arm.

If you’re living with a vindictive bitch, this becomes assault and unlawfull confinement etc. etc.

I’m not saying that’s the case at all, but when there is lots of money and maybe it’s a bad marriage anyway…….you never know. Also, it could be true. We don’t know.

Maybe, but there are no charges warranted there I wouldn’t think. It’s just a what if scenario, but yeah, it’s not good either.

It just smells funny to me. Maybe the charges are totally justified, or not. I don’t know. I’ll wait until more information and his court date, if he even has to have one, comes out.

For all we know these charges could be dropped in the next few days/weeks. I don’t know.

Yah, I’m not touching this one with a 10 foot pole. Lol, but I’m interested to see how this pans out.

I can’t say there’s ever a time to hit a woman (nor your daughter), but perhaps there’s a lot more to the story than what appears to be on the surface.

Yeah, I think it’s best to take the wait and see what this is all about approach. There are scant few details right now. Wait and watch for me.

Just found out about the charges against Smith. Hopefully it is not as bad as it sounds and they can work things out.

Yet, it’s not surprising that there are now problems. Gator was absent for periods of time while he was playing, and since he spent most of his career in the west, he would have travelled a lot. So his wife would be managing the home on her own much of the time.

I can relate to this because my husband travels and is gone at least one week a month. That’s what my kids are used to – hell, there have been many times he’s left on a Monday and around Wed one of them will ask where he is. I kid with him that it has saved our marriage because just when we start getting on each other’s nerves, it’s thankfully time for him to go away for a week. Those breaks have kept our 22 year marriage healthy!

So when you have a family unit that’s used to having one parent missing for chunks of time and then when that stops due to retirement, all of a sudden he’s around 24/7 trying to get used to a huge life change, and that often creates stress on the family unit.

That said, hopefully they can work it out and hopefully it’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s not going to be easy though, especially since it has been made public.

Of course I’m doing my nightly reading and was pleased to discover on the Cult of Hockey as follows…
Cogliano says he’s ready to take on a gritty, two-way role for Oilers. By DAVID STAPLES Oilers fans can recall a fine young centre with some talent who refused to take on a checking role until it was too late. Marc Pouliot would still be an Edmonton Oiler today if he had more readily accepted that to make it in the NHL, he had to hustle, put up a fierce fight for the puck and position himself smartly on defence, always between his check and the Oilers’ net.

Anyway, you get the idea and you know where to find the rest of the article. Great read IMHO.

I liked the MAP reference in there as well. Good to see Cogs recognizing he has more to bring to the table.

Dawgtoy: Yah, mentioned that on Steve-O’s latest “break it down” post… it’s good to hear. In a way though, I wish he didn’t have to do it, because I think he could be a really good top six guy on a team that can afford him in their top six. But I’m glad that appears like we’ll retain him and he wants to stay. Always liked him and defended him from the nut jobs that seem to think he should be traded (note: by that, I mean the people that consider him to have little value, not the people that consider him redundant here).

edit: also, adding more to your game.. becoming a two-way player.. well, that isn’t exactly a bad thing now is it..

Exactly Rack, It’s not like he’s going to the dark side or anything, he just knows that likely to secure a place to play and get the minutes he needs, he has to evolve. If he can become a Marchant type with better hands, we are so much the better.

Thanks for the heads up Racki, I think I’ll sport a white one at the ODR this year. That reminds me… are we having a POTF game? If we are we should start planning soon.

Man, the attendance would go through the roof, well most males anyways except it would probably be hard to focus. Still though, could you imagine our education system if we had teachers like Leriger/(Male versions for girls)? I wonder how that would work out.

I would love to make a Crystal wallpaper but that may be a little too creepy.

  34. By Racki, September 9, 2010 @ 10:53 pm  (Quote)

I never really put any thought into a POTF hockey game, but I’d be down. Outdoor? Indoor? Outdoor is a bit easier to get people involved, although it’s always nice to play an indoor game.

    Anyways, on a different note…

Foster is hoping to play with Ladislav Smid (per his interview on Oilers.NHL.com). I think he’ll get his wish ;)

Also, per Jason Gregor.. sounds like Jones/Fraser/Stortini will get a look as our “shutdown” line. Penner and Cogliano will also get looks at center some more this year too (although sounds like moreso Cogliano than Penner). Cogliano will be given that look on the 3rd line however. It also sounds like Horcoff will probably reclaim his #1C role and Gagner will be #2C.

I’m optimistic about Horcoff turning things around.

It’s tough to say, maybe make a poll? I think outdoor is always fun and it sticks to the roots.

    *Penner – Horc – Hemmer
    Hall – Gags – MPS/Eberle
    *____ – Cogs – Brule
    *Jones – Fraser – Stortini

So for the second except for the second line and one spot on the third line it looks like the roster could be shaping up to something similar to this?

    Whitney – Gilbert
    Smid – Foster
    Vandermeer – ______

So we have a pretty good idea of the top three D-man, Whitney, Gilbert and Smid but the rest is kind of a blur right now. What happens if Souray ends up getting traded, or plays preseason for the Oil? From the top three D-man down to goal-tending its kind of all up in the air.

Anyways, what are your guys thoughts?

  36. By Racki, September 9, 2010 @ 11:31 pm  (Quote)

My honest thoughts? I’m starting to see why people are predicting us to tank another season if our 2nd/3rd line is what you’ve got above (and it’s pretty likely it could end up that way). Oi.

I guess you never know, but it just strikes me as too many players that aren’t quite ready to get their noses dirty at the NHL level. You never know though. Guess we’ll see!

  37. By Mr.Majestyk, September 10, 2010 @ 6:12 am  (Quote)

My thoughts exactly. There has been ample opportunity for Tambi to sign a couple players that would instantly make the team better, but the fact that he hasn’t done that shows that he’s willing to see us fail again this season. Its great that we’re putting some faith in our young talent, but I re-iterate an earlier post, we need a back up plan. If things don’t go exactly right we’ll be in for a long season again.

I love all the optimism in Oil country these days, but imagine the reaction of bi-p’oiler fans if Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi don’t make an impact this season? I know its sort of far fetched for all 3 to fail, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the adjustment period takes a bit longer on atleast one of them. Really all the optimism does is feed the bi-p’oiler fan which they will turn into rage halfway through the season.

  38. By NorwegianOiler, September 10, 2010 @ 7:54 am  (Quote)

This is what I think too. I’m not very confident that we can get out of the bottom 10 with the current roster.

I think the hype’s getting to a lot of fans, sometimes me too, but there’s a limit to what can (and should) be expected of rookies, regardless of their ‘potential’. I assume we’re going to get beaten by less skilled, but more veteran teams that are able to outbattle and outsmart a lot of our youngsters – especially in our own zone. Goaltending…I worry…

  39. By Racki, September 10, 2010 @ 8:48 am  (Quote)

Ya I was really buying into the hype (and generating my own), but I have some doubts. I’m thinking we can afford one cherry minutes line if needed, but beyond that, we don’t want to have another softer / smaller line.

Always liked “Horpensky” but we might be better off spreading the wealth a bit.

Do you guys think Hall / Gagner / Hemsky would get killed? Could be pretty exciting to watch in the offensive zone, but I think while Hall has good two-way abilities, it’d be crazy to hang that role on him this early. So maybe Hall / Horcoff / Hemsky…

Then: Penner / Gagner / Eberle
MPS / Cogliano (if we must) / Brule

Jones/Fraser/Stortini seems to be a lock.

I’d prefer Brule at center over Cogliano, but it sounds like they’ll push Cogliano’s limits at C to see what he can do. He deserves a chance now that he’s excepted that he needs to be a 2-way guy to get by here.

Anyways, my thoughts are the lines are mixtures of skill/size. I guess that’s back to Quinn mentality though. Although Renney sounds like he’ll try and use Jones/Fraser/Stortini a fair bit to see if they can handle a shutdown role.
Also there has been some talk about Omark (from Jason Gregor I believe, and the Journal guys)… I still think he’s got a shot to make the lineup over someone else, but I wonder if he’ll get the chance.

  40. By LateNightOilFan, September 10, 2010 @ 8:50 am  (Quote)

    My thoughts?

Correct me if I’m wrong but haven’t Lowe and Tambi been saying we are starting over rebuilding the team from the ground up? That’s why there haven’t been any other signings to instantly make the team better – they finally stopped looking to the bandaid approach. Many of us were happy about that change in philosophy but the flip side is that we also have to be very patient.

There’s going to be some growing pains for the sake of long term gain in our future. It’s extremely likely that this team will be making at least one more trip to the lottery before we start climbing back up, and Oiler fans have to be patient with that.

I go into this season fully expecting to see more losses than wins. So I won’t get overly upset about the losses and I’ll celebrate the wins to the max. I am looking forward to watching how the young guys adapt to the NHL and how the team gels and responds to each other. I can’t wait to see our potential but I know it is going to take some time to translate that potential into success as this young team learns how to win. In order to learn how to win I fully expect to see them fall short in the beginning – but I don’t consider that failing.

Those fans who consider that failing are in for a long season. For me, the difference this year is there is so much potential to get excited about, but it has to be tempered with patience. I think that is going to be key even if the team ends up at or near the bottom of the standings again.

Finally, I hope I have seen the last of the “floating around looking like I don’t give a shit while the goalie stands on his head”. I hope to see strong leadership and teamwork again and 100% effort and combativeness from each player. If I see that mindset + skill potential from the young players + steadiness and mentoring from the older players, I won’t consider that a failure – I’ll consider the season an investment in a very promising future that will pay ultimate dividends of contending and becoming dominent once again.

I completely agree with what you’re saying LNOF, especially with what you said in your first paragraph about the new philosophy. Your whole post sums up very nicely what management is trying to accomplish, I think.

However things still seem quite rushed in my opinion. Do we honestly think some of these young boys are ready to play in the show with NHL men? It’s a tough call but if it were up to me we could still get the similar results in the win column if we stick these boys in the AHL (if a lot of people still predict another tank year). Heck, if that’s the way we are heading, for another lottery pick, I can see Hemsky easily traded by the deadline trying to bring in fresh young talent. It would be extremely hard to replace those types of skills but we sure could acquire a few “building blocks”.

Personally I really like what management is trying to achieve throughout the entire organization. You highlighted this quite well LNOF,

LateNightOilFan:Finally, I hope I have seen the last of the “floating around looking like I don’t give a shit while the goalie stands on his head”. I hope to see strong leadership and teamwork again and 100% effort and combativeness from each player. My main point here is that I think there are other ways to achieve this. Part of my philosophy is that you should only attempt putting the rookies in winning situations. If we’re setting up for disaster we are going to see this effort, willing of combativeness etc. but eventually it will subside and most likely turn into frustration. I think we could have made a few key signings over this summer, with Lowe/Tambo’s philosophy in mind and set up for a better future.

We can see a whole bunch of these kids in Oilers silks already but could you imagine what they could possibly accomplish in the AHL? I think that’s how you build a winning team, from the ground up. Personally, since Hall would have to be sent down to Juniors and because of his skill level I think that he should make the roster. Other than that though I’d rather see some of these kids later than sooner for their development sake. Go for Calder before you go for Stanley, with this group.

Another thing that bugs me is that we still have quite a lot of cap space to play with. The reason why we didn’t sign Comrie was because of something to the affect of “We want to give our kids opportunities to make the roster” which would be all fine and dandy if they were ready and we had more of an experienced group. Where we could have gone out an tried to acquire guys like, Armstrong, Malhotra, Volchenkov, Martin maybe even Halak. It’s tough to say if they’d fit the philosophy but we still have a lot of holes to fill and a bit of size to make up for, especially on that third line.

Really all the optimism does is feed the bi-p’oiler fan which they will turn into rage halfway through the season.

Never mind making an impact during the season. Where the hell will we be if even two of the kids don’t make an impact at camp? I dare any of you to put a lineup together without Eberle/Paajarvi?
Hall is in the lineup regardless (which I don’t like without the pressure of earning a spot) But thats an other subject.

    Great discussion.

I’m pretty much on board with everything that’s been said.

To me, this year is about grooming the kids and to be honest, I’m hugely dissapointed that they didn’t go harder after a guy like Madden to lead the way and help them develop skills that will keep them here.

I’m expecting a lottery pick this year. I don’t see how we are not at the bottom of the standings. I love the rookies coming in together, but I also remember about three years ago how the new three rookies were going to turn this team around. We all know how that turned out. Now we’re expecting the remaining two, Gagner and Cogs, to be key contributors/semi-vets to fill essential roles on the club and bring in as many as four new rookies to fill out others. Sounds like a potential disaster in the making if you ask me.

Don’t get me wrong. I have very low expectatioins, but I think management really missed out on the chance to at least surround these kids with a few more vets to ease the blows.

Like Vic said, what if they fail to impress at camp? Then what? Giroux and Reddox? *facepalm*

It really blows my mind that even as good as the Oilers were (rookies) when Lowe et. al. broke into the league, that he forgets they had guys like Garry Unger and Lee Fogolin and Pat Hughes and a whole host of other long time pros to help them out on nights when they couldn’t pot 6 goals. That team without those vets, in the early 80′s, wouldn’t have learned as fast as it did. (Caveat: They still would have been the same players, but it would have been a year or two more on the learning curve)

To me this team has done a lot of great things this summer, but it would have been so much better if they just traded for Halak and kept the other two guys in the minors. Halak went for basically free. Madden or Belanger were two other players I thought we should have signed one of.

D is effed up by Souray’s situation so I give them a begrudging pass there.

I don’t know that a season of being dominated is going to be good for these kids, even though I fully expect a better PP, the PK is hopefully improved, but who knows really? The other thing is what happens when the injuries come, and we all know they are coming? They always do.

I’ll boil it down to this:

If I see hard work and fun, a reduced SOG for us and increased PP efficiency with a team that actually looks like it’s playing by a game plan, then I’ll be happy. An improved PK is also one of my biggest hopes, but I am being cautious to count on Fraser to be the solution. Other guys that have not shown they can really do it, other than Horcoff or Penner, are going to have to do stuff they have not done before this year. Lots of hopes and not much to fall back on if guys come up short.

Oh well. Larsson and Coutouier look good so far. ;)

LNOF: I understand that the rebuild is going to test our patience, but I’m not completely convinced that getting our rookies top minutes in the NHL is the best or even a good way for them to develop. It could be good, but it could also be bad for their development. My problem with it is, if the youngsters that we are going to rely on can’t cut it this season, who are we going to turn to? There isn’t anyone. Lowetide had an article up about Taylor Chorney and how he looked to be regressing as a player. He speculated that part of the problem was the lack of depth on D and the role he was thrust into. He got lots of playing time, but did it make him better?

You mention guys going through the motions and not trying hard which was a concern for the last couple of seasons. That whole going through the motions thing is in large part a result of losing all the time. They give up on themselves because they are in a no win situation. That sort of thing can be extremely challenging on any player, let alone a rookie trying to break into the NHL.

If we must accept that the Oilers are going to have a tough season this year, how do we measure success? Individual success on the team? More goals for and less goals against? Wins and losses vs last season?

    A few other questions…

What if Gagner, Cogliano, Brule and Horcoff have the same or similar stats this season as they did last year? What does that mean to the Oilers moving forward.

I guess to expand on my comments and in particular response to zackman35, with respect to Hall/Eberle/Paajarvi, I’m not advocating to rush any of them. There is going to be a fine line between knowing when some adversity is going to benefit them or hurt them in their adjustment to this level – and hopefully the Oilers recognize if they need to be sent down.

I respect the winning environment philosophy, but I also think if they are going to be part of the future core, and if they are ready to take the next step to the NHL, they need to be part of developing that winning environment. These guys have excelled at every level of hockey they’ve ever played. On the assumption that they stay up, there will be times when they are going to be frustrated because they are used to excelling and they probably take it for granted, even if they say they don’t (just human nature when you are used to things a certain way). I’m looking for how they react to that frustration and how their teammates help them through it.

I think it would be beneficial for Oiler fans to watch some Islander games – it’s like looking at the future in a way when you’re talking about teams undergoing a full blown rebuild. Hall will likely go through what Tavares did – he had quite a slump mid-year because he was trying to do too much and the rigors of the season got to him, but he battled through it and it’s almost like something clicked and he finished well, which should benefit him in the long run. The other thing I like when I was watching the Isles was they were learning together what it took to win games. They often fell short but there were times when they responded very well together during the games and got the result they wanted. I think through trial and error they are discovering together what it takes to win and that’s what I’d like to see the Oilers do.

But again, if keeping the rookies in the lineup is detrimental to their development then by all means put them down. If that happens, then we will see how Tambi adjusts the team.

    Cogliano signed. 1 year

EDIT: And Elliotte Friedman says 1 year for 1 mil.

I like that signing. Good for both sides. I’m sure Cogs is going to be highly motivated to win a bigger contract either with the Oilers or another club next year. I think he’ll have a good year.

I’d like to weigh in briefly.. preparing a post (just running short on time to do it right now), but I think playing the kids through this stuff is territory that has already been explored on other teams… take a lesson from them.
