Here’s a link to Stauffer’s interview with KLowe from this afternoon.

    http://oilers.nhl.com/club/podcastplayer.htm?pid=98&iid=23848

Mostly just fluff, yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah type stuff, but the last two minutes or so are at least promising.

To paraphrase, Stauffer asks if there are any areas the team might want to address or tweak yet this off season and although KL says it’s tough to do things with the salary cap, he acknowledges the lack of any real sort of face off prowess and also indicates they have some interest in potentially more of a shut down type on D.

Hark, is that the sound of management finally having their heads removed from their arses?

Dawgtoy: So true, it’s why this is by far my favorite place for my Oilers fix.

    Thanks gr8one!

Also, yah, seriously.. for how long have some of us been saying “We don’t need Hossa, Jagr, etc., give us a face off guy and shutdown d-man!”. About time that management is buying in too. I remember an interview 2 or 3 years ago in which Tambellini said they weren’t interested in signing a 3rd line center/checker type.. and I pretty much sulked disappointedly at that.

I enjoy Lowtide as much ad the next guy, I have no complaints in regards to his articles nor the way he answers to his comments. I like the articles at ON, but can’t seem to find respect for the “hired guns” who bully on the basis that once upon a time they were beat writers for a major newspaper chain. Whether on the radio or in his articles, this constant attitude that I know more then you is such BS.

Many of us have a love for the Game. I’ve loved it all my life. There is copper in my blood, and i would have given anything to be one of the boys on the bus just once. My dream ended after a rather severe injury playing junior hockey. I only played one season but it was the best time I had ever had in my life with the exception of the birth of my children and marrying my wife. Hockey is my favorite sport, hobby, pass time and I spend way to much time reading and writing about it. I have the right to form an opinion just as the next guy, and that opinion may or may not be shared by others, but the opinion is mine and mine alone.
I get annoyed when people bully others for having a differing opinion on a subject that we all have some form of expertise in. Most of us here likely spend much of our time reading, studying, and formulating our thoughts. To have someone spit on your thoughts is asinine and rude, but to then have the audacity to hide behind the Internet while pretending to be ten foot tall and bulletproof is pathetic.

If you could only fill one position, shut down D or third line center with face-off/PK prowess, which would you chose at this junctsure?

  5. By Racki, August 23, 2010 @ 9:06 pm  (Quote)

Wow, tough call. I think both are pretty key. But given that we have 800 defensemen all jamming in for 7 spots, and the organization has a raging one for Strudwick, I’d say that I’d go with the 3rd line center on that merit alone.

However, if it were my choice, several of those fringe d-men would be cut, and I’d take the shutdown defencemen. I am of the belief that you build a team from the back end up, and I just think a rock of a defensive defensemen would go a long way.

As to your post before that, man I’ve thought that several times, myself. I don’t want to say it because I’m not one to rock the boat, but the way I see it, if you play nice enough, your opinion will be respected. Try not to be shocked here, everyone, but I know I can be wrong sometimes and I’m not afraid to admit it (lawl). So I welcome people disagreeing with me.

Anyways, the crap that goes down on ON can be pretty distracting. I may not be anywhere near the best poster they have there, but I can think of several quality posts (or even simply some questions to the OPs) that I made that just completely disappeared under a bunch of heated exchanges between other people.

Well, this answers the question we’ve been wondering a bit:

    From Dan Tencer’s twitter:
Lowe on Gagner/Cogs: “We like both players but we’re uncertain where their overall game is. The easiest thing would be to do one year deals”

Hmm… I can agree with that on Cogliano… but still not totally sold that’s the best thing to do with Gagner, unless they can’t bring his salary down low enough.

Edit: That said, I’m a bit optimistic that they’ve learned from previous (Nilsson/Horcoff) mistakes.

  7. By Racki, August 23, 2010 @ 9:44 pm  (Quote)

Another interesting Tencer tweet in regards to Lowe’s interview…

Lowe emphasizes that expectations will be kept low and win or lose, playing the young guys will be above all else for right now.

Guess that answers another question.. we should be seeing lots of the kids this year.

chucker: Gags should be offered 2.25, 2.4, 2.8 with performance bonuses if he hit 50 pts of 250k and if he hits 60 pts of 400k. That would be a fair contract that makes him work. Cogs should be about 1.5, 1.65, 1.8 with similar performance bonuses. Both of these guys are clearly trying to get as much as they can on a team with few options and a history of giving out too much to guys like them. Those days are gone.

Hey chucker, I like your numbers but I don’t think the CBA will allow any performance bonuses for either player. Near as I can tell, a player’s contract can only contain performance bonuses if it is (1) an entry level contract, which Cogs/Gags are coming off, (2) a 1-year for a player with 400+ NHL games coming off over 100 days on LTIR, or (3) a 1-year age 35+ contract.

So I like your contract numbers, but our boys might be looking a bit higher?

Re your earlier question Racki, Cogs/Gags both have 3 years in, by my calcs, they’ll be UFA after 4 more seasons and RFA arbitration eligible after next season. Personally, I think they should lock Gags in for more than a 1-year.

  12. By Racki, August 24, 2010 @ 10:27 am  (Quote)

LNOF: First… I think you’re right about bonuses… that was the way I understood it when I was looking at that part a while back.

Secondly, I’m not so sure Gagner is asking for that high… as surprising as it sounds, just from what I’ve been hearing. But admittedly it’s all speculation though.

At any rate, if he’s looking for the 2.5M range, I’d give it to him for 3 years (or whatever would take him to the final RFA year).

Cogliano is an “interesting” case, to say the least. He’s a guy that hasn’t been utilized to his potential, but moreso due to being a redundant piece here. So as such, his numbers have been artificially deflated. If we had more time/space to showcase him, teams would be knocking down the door for him. It kind of sucks, because you know they once were.. and all of us (GMs included) were saying “no way, he’s untouchable”. Funny how things change..

    Patric Hornqvist re-signs with Predators:

    3 years @ $9.25M (almost $3.1M per)

Hmm.. 1 year performance.. definitely a good year though, but not helping our argument with our players much. However, I think it’s still another contract that should keep Gagner’s asking price down to a reasonable level, since Hornqvists numbers are better than anything Gagner’s put up in his 3 years here.

  14. By chucker, August 24, 2010 @ 11:35 am  (Quote)

Bummer. I admit I’m not a CBA guy so I just threw it out there. Maybe it’s not as dire as it sounds as per Racki’s comments below. Hopefully not. I’d be comfortable with 2.5 on Gags.

On Cogliano, he’s likely taking a bit harder line on salary due to who he’s had to play with the last two years. He did score 18 goals with limited ice time. He has something about his game that intrigues me in terms of where he could rise to. i.e. I don’t think he’s had the opportunity to show as much as he’s got and he likely feels the same way. If the guy was reliable on the dot it wouldn’t even be an issue. I still think 1.6ish is what he’s worth given what he’s shown, but I can understand his side of the equation as well.

Playing with Moreau isn’t going to make you look good. Just ask Penner about how that worked out for him in MacT’s last year…

  15. By Racki, August 24, 2010 @ 1:44 pm  (Quote)

Yup, my thoughts exactly on Cogliano. I don’t blame him at all… a guy wants to play not just where he’ll be most beneficial to a team, but where he’ll also be able to have his own success. Sounds selfish, but you know most guys in the league feel the same… and there’s no need for “taking one for the team” on a 30th place team. He should be looking out for his own ass. I hope the Oil move him, for his own sake.

bah, looks like the ‘nucks signed Raffi Torres…they are looking pretty scary with the depth players they are adding, if the sedins have the same kind of season they did last year they just might be the team to beat now in the west.

something like Raymond/Malhotra/Torres looks like a pretty damned badass third line.

  17. By Racki, August 24, 2010 @ 11:21 pm  (Quote)

Wasn’t much of a fan of Raffi Torres. But that said, not looking to him blindsiding any of our players on a more regular basis either ;)

Gotta say though, at $1M… that is a bargain.

  18. By mrgod2u, August 25, 2010 @ 8:51 am  (Quote)

Yeah, just on the hitting side alone that could be dangerous… He has worked pretty hard to remove the scoring side of his game the last few years, that might be why his price tag is so low.

My deepest hope for the Canucks is that the pressure gets to them and they crash and burn into a smoking ruin outside the playoffs…

  19. By Racki, August 25, 2010 @ 9:47 am  (Quote)

Do you think the Nucks are still looking to move Bieksa though with Salo spending a good portion of the year on LTIR? With Burrows also on LTIR to start the year they will have a cap cushion so they might not be in as much of a rush as everyone thinks.

I think there’s too much smoke. I agree with what you’re saying, but signing Torres doesn’t help their cap even if it is a ridiculoulsy cheap contract. Maybe the LTIR cap relief will be enough. I’m not sure if it will or not. (not my thing)

My logic is that he has been shoped and the competition was allegedly Souray and Mitchell. Mitchell is now a King so that makes Bieksa the most desirable by my thinking (for Washington).

Vancouver is 3.658 over the cap right now with Torres. http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=29 Moving Bieksa gets them under and is a better contact for Washington if they are still interested like is being rumoured.

  27. By gr8one, August 25, 2010 @ 5:50 pm  (Quote)

My understanding was that Vancouver wanted to re-sign Mitchell, and if they could than Bieksa would be the guy getting shipped out, but that if Mitchell signed elsewhere than the Nucks would be keeping Bieksa.

It was also my understanding that the two biggest holdups for a Souray trade was Kaberle and Mitchell, and once they were not traded/signed then the teams that missed out on those would direct their interest toward Souray, so the fact that Mitchell is now signed might actually be a good thing in helping along a Souray trade.

  28. By Racki, August 25, 2010 @ 8:18 pm  (Quote)

The Canucks should be OK for now since Salo will be on LTIR (and possibly Burrows and whomever else) for a while. But once they get these guys back, they’ll have to scramble to figure out what to do. Maybe they’ll jettison a lesser d-man or two, or maybe other LTIR’d players will provide cap relief.. who knows.

Really though I’d love for them to get into Flamers-like trouble mid-season. :P

Bob Stauffer interviewed Steve Tambellini recently. There’s a lot of good stuff, and David Staples has already done all the ground work to compile it. So, since I’m a lazy ass tonight and already did a couple of hours of work around the home and would rather just relax…check it out here.

  30. By Racki, August 25, 2010 @ 9:46 pm  (Quote)

One of the biggest parts I took out of the interview is it sounds like they’ll keep Cogliano around. God I sure hope so. Despite that he is a bit redundant here, I think his value is very deceivingly low right now and I think if they give him a shot on a scoring line with a guy like Penner (Penner-Brule-Cogliano or Penner-Gagner-Cogliano for the ultimate win), he’ll pay dividends.

One thing I DID like about Quinn last year too, early on, was the pairings idea he had. He’s pair two forwards together, and then throw in another piece.. that 3rd piece was usually an interchangeable part, but the pairing was something that was key… two guys that really worked together. I think it’s important that Cogliano is paired with a guy like Penner or Brule (basically someone with grit and determination in the corners and some skill.. so Horcoff mayyyy fit the bill too). The 3rd guy can be a bit of a variety, and depends on who they pair him with. I think if it’s Brule, I could see the 2 paired with MPS. If it’s Penner, I’d put Gagner at center (or Brule as mentioned above).

Really, while I’d like to see a line with some more solid shutdown abilities than what we’ll have, I do like that we could assemble a few scoring lines. It’ll be interesting to see what Renney plans.

Yeah, this is why I don’t think they’re in any hurry to move Bieksa before the start of the season. I think I read somewhere that Burrows will possibly be on LTIR until Dec and Salo possibly later, so that solves their immediate cap problem. By mid-season there could be more injuries and they may need Bieksa. Seems like they would be smart to wait and see, plus other teams might have injuries to their D to deal with and that might increase their return if they do decide to trade Bieksa during the year.

  32. By chucker, August 26, 2010 @ 1:44 pm  (Quote)

Yeah, with those two guys on LTIR it would make sense to keep Bieksa. I guess the fact that players always get injured is another thing they can count in in terms of other cap relief. Maybe they end up moving somebody mid-season as you both suggested if need be.

Someone on the omb said the Flyers wanted MPS or the Oilers first rounder, but that doesn’t sound right. It is a kick in the nuts as Hartnell is the type of forward we are lacking right now. The flyers are also no longer a possible team for Souray, their defense is set and cap is a mess.

Might as well just face the fact souray is staying in Edmonton, and I won’y be shocked if we hear another painful rumor of what could have been.

I listened to Tencer’s interview with Tambi and I got the impression that the impasse between Souray and Tambi is personal, or it got personal. Tambi just didn’t take the same approach that Lowe did when discussing the possiblility of Souray coming back to the Oilers. He kept referring to Souray as ‘the player’ and I believe only once referred to him as Sheldon. That sounds a bit odd typing it out, the fact that he didn’t refer to him by name makes me think they have a personal grudge, but generally when speaking of someone they use their name. He always refers to Gagner as Sam and Cogs as Andrew.

**drifts off to Oilers dreamland where we land that ever elusive #1C with size**

sorry, I just can’t help it…the acquisition of a player like that, imo would just cement our forwards roster, round it out perfectly and then we’d be a a year or two of kid growth and a high end defenseman away from being a contender.

I say that, because he talks about not being mentally ready for the next season because of the disappointing end to the last. Imagine the disappointment when he finds out he just went from the Stanley Cup Finalist to the 30th overall team. lol

I would welcome that trade though. Those are good lines. Although I’d say that I’m hoping now for our 4th line to have one of the defensive guys we discussed yesterday on it :P

Anyone know ? I would be fine with Cogs going but in no way shape or form would I be happy to see Gags go under any circumstances. MetalOil: Is there some sort of deal in the works to bring Elias to Edmonton ? ( a rumor right now ) I was reading the latest TSN story on how it looks like the NHL will allow the next Kovy deal to go through and there is a lot of talk about a Cog, Gags or even both being traded to the Devils for Elias talk in the comments section. http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=331817 So where did this all come from? Anyone know ? I would be fine with Cogs going but in no way shape or form would I be happy to see Gags go under any circumstances. Not gonna read too much more into this unless I see if this came from a reliable source.

There was a rumour proposal type thread on this on HF a while ago. I think it’s all BS. Just people making shit up. It makes no sense for us unless Souray is going the other way and I can’t see Gagner or Cogs being involved.

The Devils have wanted to dump Elias for a while now because of his contract. Swapping bad contracts is all that should be considered here. Maybe a draft pick, but no more.

So, I’m hearing some rumors Oilers are shopping Penner/Cogs and LA has big interest in Penner, which kind of makes sense since they lost out on Kovy.

If that were true, what kind of return would you all want?

    Penner/Cogs/Souray for Simmonds/Stoll/Johnson???

lol, not likely but nice to wish for???

Why isn’t that likely, gr8one? We’ve got to stop thinking of our good players as undesirable and being infatuated with other teams average players.

We’d have to take more salary back though, as we’re giving them too much, but I think the components swapped lean towards LA’s favor though.

Penner is easily the best player in the deal, and you know what they say about which team wins (the one that gets the best player in the deal). Thirty-two goals and 63 points on the worst team in the NHL.. that’s got to say something. Plus we know Cogliano is much better than he appears.

I like Stoll, but remember why we got rid of him in the first place… questions surrounding his concussion and inability to put the puck in the net (or even get a shot off without breaking his stick). He brings some good intangibles though, but for “my money”, I’d spend it differently than $3.6M for Stoll.

Simmonds, well i think he is likely a below average second liner, upper 3rd liner and
perhaps one of those “seen him good” types.

Jack Johnson I like though. He’s the second best player in the trade and there is a lot of potential there for him to be better. He doesn’t come without any baggage though (re: his dad).

From our side I would be pretty hesitant to do it. It would seem like it would be motivated by just trying to move Souray.

But hey, on the flip side…. does it improve our team as a whole? Big forward (although we’re giving one up, with more skill all around)… checking center… plus all-around d-man… damn. Hard to say no to that.

Geez, I don’t know. I think L.A. would get a pretty damn good deal here. But we’d also address some good needs. I just have a tough time sending Penner off..
