Fair enough on Conz likely being available much later on. I haven’t actually seen the rankings on him, I just knew that some rankings had Jack Campbell going as early as 6th overall, so figured Conz probably would be a guy that would be gone sometime in the 2nd. But if we could get him with a 3rd or 4th rounder, great. :) I would like to see us draft another goaltender though. But there is time for that (i.e., doesn’t have to be this year, but it would be nice to get a goalie developing in our system as soon as possible – aside from Roy… a backup plan is what I’m looking for).

victoriaoilerfan: Here is a little blurb by Spector I hadn’t read before as to why Spector thinks we should pick Seguin. He also adresses the issue (I think correctly about sending either of them back to junior). Anyhow if you have all read it, sorry if I am late to the table: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/06/16/spector_five_reasons_seguin/

I read this today too (came to my attention courtesy of a David Staples article). I’m sorry, it just doesn’t strike me as a strong enough argument at all. I’m not saying we should draft Hall though. My thoughts is that us fans and the MSM can input all we want… but Stu MacGregor (affectionately referred to as Magnificent Bastard by Lowetide) is really the one guy whose opinion I trust. I can say ’til I’m blue in the face “but Taylor Hall has a shooter’s attitude, something we need!”, but really MacGregor and his scouts are the ones that have seen countless hours of tape and they know the separation between the two. I have a lot of faith in MacGregor and the Oilers making the right choice. I’ve pretty much decided that I’m happy no matter who they take, because I know the Oil will have done their due diligence.

Both of these guys are natural centers. Both have great goal scoring prowess. Both have very good hockey minds. I know Hall has great speed and defensive skill. I know Seguin technically did as good as Hall’s 3rd year of junior in only his second year. There are valid arguments for both sides, but really, the best way to know these guys is to watch them, not read stuff on the internet.

Go Disco Stu… pick the best guy available.

2. Racki says:

Oh btw, one thing that I agree in the article about is that if we draft Seguin, he probably should play another year in the OHL. I’m sure that would be very good for him. It’s tough to say that Hall would benefit from another year or not.

For the record, while I throw these guys and MPS and Eberle in mock lineups, those are generally meant more for down the road and not necessarily or today. No problem in seeing these guys in the CHL or for MPS/Eberle in OKC.

3. dawgtoy says:

I somewhat agree, I’d really like to see the Oilers stack the lineup in OKC and see what happens with player development. Seguin should go back to Junes and make the WJHC and continue to develop … Hopefully. If it’s Hall at the draft, then he likely is the only rook to make the team that would be fine with me. Just hope they do this right. Take it slow. Don’t make changes for the sake of making changes.

Yeah, pretty much totally agree, except that I think that Hall should definitely not go back to junior. If he were eligible for the AHL, I’d definitely say give him some time there, but I really don’t see him benefiting from another year of domination, I mean, playing for Gold in the WJHC’s and Two time memorial cup MVP and winner…just nothing more left for him there.

But yeah, I say definitely Seguin should go back and play in jr.

5. Racki says:

Yes, I agree too that Seguin goes back to Junior, Hall should stay here (unless he’s absolutely atrocious)… sorry, wasn’t too clear in my post, but that’s basically what I was saying when I wasn’t so sure another year of junior would benefit Hall.

6. Mr.Majestyk says:

its kind of hard to send a kid back to juniour or to the AHL if they are outplaying the guys we have on the big club. So hopefully we’re heading into the season with enough NHL’ers where the rookies look like rookies. I guess what I’m saying is that I hope training camp is really competitive for roster spots. When Gags came into the league he probably wasn’t ready for the NHL just yet and could of used another season in juniour but he was unfortunately our best option. We need more options than just penciling in 8 rookies into the lineup.

7. Racki says:

Agreed, Mr. M.. good point. I guess if we’re going to keep MPS and/or Eberle in the minors and/or have our #1 overall pick in Junior, this team is going to need some better options all over the roster. The future is bright, but the present is pretty bleak! Of course, I suppose we could always tank another year… who’s up for that? :P

8. Bostonoiler says:

Nucks fans think they are getting the 3rd overall pick for Mason Raymond and the 25th overall pick LMAO

Fuck that, I say if the brass plays their cards right we should have enough chips/commodities to work with. Some organizations, like Detroit for instance, have had success year after year with a “good system” + drafting and proper acquisitions. I’m not saying that we should screw the rebuild but I don’t think following the “Chicago model” is be all end all. I suppose you could argue the success they’ve had, like just wining the cup for instance but what I’m trying to get at is that tanking doesn’t have to be a necessity to build a good team. I’m not calling you out or anything Racki, cause I’m guessing you’re just joking.

The draft is a very good tool but there are other ways around it, ala Bruins getting the Leafs’ picks this year and next, we have comodities to work with this draft and hopefully we use them come draft day.

It’s a tough market but I’m not too sure that this kind of market in Edmonton can handle another year or two of shit.

Like previously mentioned stock up on prospects, see what they can do in the A and acquire your roster players accordingly no more tanking/brown-baging shit seasons.

10. Racki says:

haha, no, I put the tongue-sticking-out smilee after that comment for a reason. I was being sarcastic. Really, we’ve gone through 4 years of failure… I think we’ve built up enough assets from that to not have to go through another year.

Now before people jump on that and freak and say we’re not ready… I’m not saying we bring in all the kids, let them loose, and we’ll be a winner. I’m saying we can ease them slowly into the system, yes, and we can make a few moves here and there to improve the team. We can have another one of those usual Oiler years where it’s a crapshoot as to whether we make the playoffs this year. If we do, great.. more experience for these guys. If we don’t, well, no big deal, as we’re just stocking up more help.

We get our top guy (hopefully anyways, if they pan out) this year… theres really no need to tank another season.

I think this year I’d like to see MPS and Eberle each in camp. If they look a little shakey, well, keep them in the A. If they look good.. give them a few games up here and see how it goes. They’re at the perfect age for us to experiment with them a bit.

As for Hall or Seguin… unless Seguin makes an immediate impact, I say he goes back to the O. If we draft Hall, as I mentioned earlier, I think he stays here.

I’ve put him in lineups on the top line, but that was more of a thought for a few years from now. If we’ve got kids in the lineup, I think its best to give them some sheltered minutes on a lower line.

I think this year we can survive with a Nashville-esque team. Have a few guys here that can score, but acquire some hard working players with defensive skill and just win some games the dirty way. We don’t need a home-run UFA or trade (unless it’s a young guy in their prime/20s – which is why I like the idea of Carter or Horton) – No Hossas / Jagrs, etc.. We just need a few guys that play like the Brules, Potulnys and such.

11. zackman35 says:

Yeah, well put Racki, that seems to be the general consensus. I stepped into the sandbox today and things are looking good there I had a little trouble signing in though but that’s fine looks like you won’t need my gfx. I was wanting to make a vintage layout but I think I may work with a developed them and go from there.

12. Racki says:

Yah, I found the best thing to do was to take a theme that existed and modify it because there is so much stuff in a WordPress theme you don’t even know about. If you just whipped up your own theme from scratch, you probably wouldn’t even be able to post comments with it at first until you realized you needed to add all that stuff! :P

Lots to the the themes, but they’re very customizable though.

13. zackman35 says:

Looks really good though, you’ve done a good job. Well if you’d like I can work on a vintage theme in a while here and if I knew how to code it would be a different story but here I am with a layout and nothing to really show for it haha.

Looks like my old comment quote plug-in was broken, so I added a new one. Feel free to point this stuff out if you guys notice this stuff.. I was wondering why you folks were manually quoting stuff! haha

Anyways, Zack, which theme were you referring to that looks good? The one on the sandbox? I like the look of that one, just how it is uncluttered and such, so may eventually add that in, but it needs some work.

As far as something you want to do, definitely feel free to do something up… no hard feelings if you are too busy or don’t feel like doing one, or whatever. It’s up to you. A vintage one would be cool though.

Would it be a bad thing? Truly? Next year’s crop is supposed to have three guys who are franchise players already in the top three that are supposedly better (projections) than Hall and Seguin.

It wouldn’t break my heart, but it would be a rough year and I don’t know if I could deal with that. I don’t like being the laughing stock of the league, but next year’s top picks are amazing.

16. Racki says:

Really? Any idea on the names? I haven’t heard anything about next year’s crop. Maybe the Oilers can a first round pick or two out of the habitual bottom feeding teams.

Edit: found the names:
Adam Larsson – Swedish defenceman
Sean Couturier – Canadian centreman
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Canadian centreman

I think everyone knows my stance on needing a franchise d-man here… dang.. wrong year to get the #1 pick, perhaps. But hey, I’m not complaining, having Hall or Seguin should be pretty superb too.

17. chucker says:

@ Racki:
Those are the top three I’ve seen so far and all with fantastic reviews. David Musil is also reportedly to be better than the top three D-men this year. It’s early though, but from what I’ve been told, the top ten next year has three potential franchise players and the rest are likely better than the top ten from this year.

Here’s a good article on some of the other guys who should be automatics as well. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=523278

18. Racki says:

Maybe the Oil need to go with the old Montreal Canadiens approach…. stockpile on extra 1st rounders early on and hope that one of them ends up landing somewhere in the top part of the draft.

19. Mr.Majestyk says:

I think out of those guys you listed we go with The Nuge, because that would definitely be his nickname.

20. Racki says:

Cat Scratch Fever will be played every time he does anything on his shifts.

21. Racki says:

Bob McKenzie’s twitter says the TSN final draft rankings will be up today at Noon EST (10pm in Edmonton). These rankings are generally the best indication out there. McKenzie leaked that Hall is #1 overall on his list, but not sure if he was joking. I assume he was serious.

22. Bostonoiler says:

Rumor has it Oilers open up season October 7th at home against Calgary.

23. Racki says:

Wow, crazy. I guess that means we won that trade… lol

24. Mr.Majestyk says:

I was thinking that our team should improve this season just by not having Grebs this year. If he becomes a UFA and the Oilers are still looking to fill in D, would the Oilers take him back?

25. Racki says:

hah, that would be an interesting move. I guess if he goes UFA there is a chance we could get him for a cheaper price than his last deal.. maybe around the 2M mark, which wouldn’t be so bad. I’d welcome him back, just because that means i can unretire the signed Lokomotiv jersey of his I have. lol But aside from that.. hmm, probably wouldnt be a move I’d make as GM.

26. gr8one says:

Man, if any of you internerds has the ability to set up a live stream of the “Oilchange” documentary on Thursday, I’d promise to love you long time.

27. Racki says:

I would, but that is illegal, as far as I know, and not something I’d do.

But I’m guessing they might have it on TSN though.

28. gr8one says:

yea, and why do I have some nagging recollection that teams are not allowed to sign a FA the following offseason after trading them?

or am I on crack there?

29. Racki says:

I think you’re talking about the one that has to do with an RFA offersheet. I forget how that one works.. something like if you match an offersheet, you can’t trade that player for a year or something.

I don’t think there is a rule that prevents what you are talking about though.

30. gr8one says:

Some “Hockey Insider” dude is tweeting that a Spezza to Columbus for Huselius, Brassard and the fourth overall pick is imminent.

Holy shit a line of Umberger, Spezza and Nash will be scary.

And then Dreger says:

Darren Dreger:
I just asked Bryan Murray if I can kill the “Spezza to Columbus rumour”…he replied, “yes, please do.” End of story. For now.

31. Mr.Majestyk says:

What a great trade for the Sens that would have been. Amazing young player in Brassard, on of the big D in this years draft, who cares about Huselius but he could compliment their offence. Alas, its not true.

32. Racki says:

Huselius would at least give them another top six LWer. He’s taken a bit of a beating from people lately, but he does still put up good numbers. I’d say that trade would benefit both sides quite well.

33. Mr.Majestyk says:

True, but if that is anywhere near what it would take to get Spezza, count me out.

34. Racki says:

Yah for sure, I agree. I don’t think we really have anything to compete with that without imploding the team too much.

But I think this is a B.S. rumor anyways.

35. Mr.Majestyk says:

I just read Eklund Twatwaffle’s post and it made me laugh. When he says that he has reliable sources its like he’s referring to Darren Dreger. Reminds me of the sketch on Mr.Show when channel 6 news just steals stories from other networks.

36. Racki says:

Ohhh big news via Dan Tencer Twitter:

@DarrenDreger said on my show tonight that, in regards to the Oilers coaching staff, “good sources tell me there will be change”.

Surprised? Not exactly.. but it’s just interesting to hear the confirmation on it.

37. Mr.Majestyk says:

hmmm, in what capacity? Bucky and Fleming or something bigger? Is Quinn just on 1 year at a time or what is his situation?

38. Racki says:

Well, seeing as how Buchy and Flemming still haven’t gotten new contracts, I’m guessing they’re gonzo. But who comes in, in place of them? Wasn’t there some speculation circulating about Boughner? Or perhaps that was just for OKC, actually, now that i think about it. I’m not sure who they’d replace these guys with… maybe one or two of these.

39. Bostonoiler says:

Tencer said there will be coaching changes. From what I’ve heard on twitter Bucky is getting a promotion and Flemming will be retiring. Meaning one new assistant will be hired as far as we know. Should be interesting.

40. Racki says:

I was kind of wondering about Buchy. I figured both these guys would be gone since they weren’t renewed yet. But I kind of wondered if maybe one was moving up, and Quinn was moving up too. But I guess we’ll see what happens.

41. chucker says:

$5 on Bucky heading up fitness and development.

42. Racki says:

$5 he’s in charge of teaching guys how to do the inside-outside-lift-your-stick-over-their-head move.

43. Bostonoiler says:

Any ideas on these coaching moves that are rumored by Tencer and DD from TSN??? The stuff I heard on twitter makes sense, but will Renner be taking over?

44. chucker says:

@ Racki:
LMAO!! Every single rush…..failed again.

45. chucker says:

Bostonoiler wrote:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcDCvQbOdig My impression of Quinn speaking and how it sounds to the kids. I hope Renney takes over.

46. Mr.Majestyk says:

So looks like Mike Modano’s days are numbered in Dallas. At first I figured he was just going to retire but it seems like he still wants to play if the right team comes calling. So, what teams do you think might show interest/be a fit for the 40 year old Modano?

a couple of possibilities:

Minnesota – His career started with the North Stars, could it end back in Minnesota?

Detroit – He’s a Michigan native and Red Wings are still cup contenders year in and year out.

47. Racki says:

The Oilers… 8 years at $10M per.. we finally nabbed our superstar, boys!!!! *high fives*

48. gr8one says:

No, make it 14 years and the last 4 years salary @ 5.0m, 2.5, 1.25, .075, to bring his cap hit down…who cares if he’s over 35 and retires, he’s a superstar!!!!!!!!!!!

49. gr8one says:

Tencer saying Oilers presser @ noon?

And Oilers PR told him it was big enough that he also ought to leave the golf course for.

Anyways, and BobMack is saying Horton to Boston is a done deal. No details yet though.
