This page can be used to discuss anything you like, whether it’s hockey, or anything else (short of viagra, and other exciting spam topics). Just use the comments down below to post what you like. Try not to get too out of hand. Obviously keep it clean still, and keep it legal. Other than that, feel free to talk about whatever you like here.

I will be at O’Byrnes before the Kings game on Tuesday (barring any unfortunate incidents :P) from 4PM and out. If anyone wants to link up that would be cool.
Look for a pair of guys wearing the old CCM copper and blue jersey (one home, one away) with strange unfamiliar names on the back – 97 and 17 as the numbers ;)

If all else fails, scream “Where are you damn Norwegians” and we’ll talk after the bar fight.

If this time isn’t good for you, there will be time another time – we’ll be around for all three home games this week, though not all plans have been made yet.

Robbie Schremp’s first NHL goal from last night:

  3. LateNightOilFan says:

I was watching the Isles game last night – that was 3 1/2 years of doubt leaping off Schremp’s shoulders and creating a force to propel him forward into Mark Streit’s arms. It was pretty cool, nice to see that pure joy and emotion and get the win too. Outshot 17-3 in the 3rd, Roli held his ground to preserve the tie and Nielsen converted a breakaway in OT to finish off the Bruins.

  4. gr8one says:

haha, right on Schrempie, keep it up!

Round 3 on this blog off:
    http://thenhlarena.com/index.php?showtopic=120224

Not sure how Lowetide got dropped out.. that’s kind of crazy.

  6. Racki says:

So I went out and played some hockey at the outdoor rink tonight. To say I’m out of shape would be an understatement. I can keep up with the kids or out skate them briefly, then I’m huffin’ wind for a good few minutes… pain sets in… feel like I’m going to puke / pass out / die… then good to go in another few minutes. haha Good fun though.

  7. Mr.Majestyk says:

If the Oilers should lose all games with NorwegianOiler in town, should he be banned from Edmonton forever?

  8. gr8one says:

yeah, speaking of N.O., has anyone here actually met him yet?

  9. gr8one says:

haha, yeah…I can totally relate, I discovered an indoor rink not far from where I live, and thus have been wanting to join a mens league, and a couple of weeks ago, my wife as an early Christmas present bought me full gear so I can join.

so, last weekend I went to a “stick and puck” session…and of course everyone sees my team Canada jersey and starts talking about how good I’m going to be, (just because I’m a Canadian living in the south, automatically makes me Gretzky) so anyways…I did nothing but suck wind and found muscles I forgot I had…it was brutal.

I also gotta say that I used for the first time ever a one piece composite stick and holy shit the puck flies off that thing, but holy shit I cannot get used to it…for every shot I hit the net, 10 shots went over the glass.

but yeah…that feeling of puking is not pleasant.

  10. Racki says:

Watching the replay of the World Jrs exhibition game between Canada and the Czechs. Let me tell you, Pierre McGuire has a raging one for Eberle. He has a big crush on him.

Eberle is on the top PP (from what I can tell) and usually parks himself in front of the net a la Smytty. He scored a goal that way tonight, burying the rebound upstairs off of a point shot.

  11. Racki says:

Oiler prospect Hartikainen just scored. Just threw a shot from a bad angle on net and it went in upstairs.

  12. Racki says:

Rumors going around (from the Fourth Period, as well as Elliot Friedman from HNIC, and Bob McKenzie from what I can tell) that the Jackets and Capitals are talking trade. Looks like the Jackets are looking for a d-man. Doesn’t sound like anything major though. Interest is in Shaone Morrison or Milan Jurcina.

Do the Oilers intervene here? CBJ is always a good trading partner for us.

  13. Racki says:

    This deal is done now…

Milan Jurcina and Chris Clark to Columbus. Jason Chimera to Washington.

  14. Haboiler says:

Chimera should help out Washington on the 2nd line and Clark adds some nice toughness to Columbus. Not a bad deal for both sides.

  15. Racki says:

Some are speculating that Ovechkin will be named captain there, as Clark was former captain.

  16. gr8one says:

yeah, seems like a good trade for both teams.

can’t see Ovie not becoming captain.

Shaone Morrison would be a great fit for our D-corps.

  17. Racki says:

Yah Morrisonn might be a decent pick up.

  18. Mr.Majestyk says:

Schremp scored his 2nd goal for the Islanders the other night. Nice roofjob on the PP as he was parked at the side of the net.

  19. Racki says:

At this rate, he’s going to have an impressive top-6 set of highlights by the time he retires.

  20. Mr.Majestyk says:

if the Islanders send Schremp to the minors are we the first team to take a crack at getting him back? And if so, do we?

  21. Racki says:

They did? We are the first team to get crack because he was claimed on waivers from us (if not for that, we’d be second). Do we take him back? Definitely not. He’ll likely clear. He has a better chance of succeeding there than he does here.

  22. Mr.Majestyk says:

Yeah, he’s definitely getting an opportunity with the Isles. Racki, do you think Schremp is a smart hockey player? Quinn makes no bones about our team being dumb in his interviews. I find it funny, but I have to agree with him.

  23. Racki says:

LOL, Quinn’s comment about this team being dumb was kind of funny. I take back some of my comments on MacT… clearly he was frustrated too.

Anyways, Schremp… I think, yes, he is a smart hockey player. He seems to have hockey sense, but there are some tools in his game that he obviously is lacking (skating issues, confidence to name a couple). Plus he’s the type that you really have to dedicate top-six minutes to for him to be effective at all.

Our team is currently in a state of hurt. But even so, I wouldn’t look back and take Schremp back. Time to move on, on that one.

  24. Mr.Majestyk says:

Schremp with another assist tonight! I think he’s playing with Bailey and Sim.

  25. Mr.Majestyk says:

You guys listen to the audio from Quinn today? Quinn sounds like he’s going to change things up from a system standpoint. They are having a mini-camp to try and get all the fundamentals down. Interesting.

  26. otto84 says:

Shremp actually hasn’t been that great with the Islanders up to this point. He did have a nice shootout goal, though.

  27. Racki says:

Oh that’s what the mini-camp stuff was all about. Steve-O checked twitter from work and read that, but we didn’t know what it meant. I thought they were going to let us try out for the team…….

Seriously though, that is a pretty good idea. Good to hear he hasn’t given up on the team like the rest of us though.

  28. Bostonoiler says:

No Racki thats not good. Now they will try to win and end up in 9th……ugh

  29. Racki says:

Yup, my thoughts exactly on that. I know there is a good chance we don’t land one of the top two picks, although no chance of making the playoffs still, of course.

I don’t like it for the “Tank for Taylor” side of it, but I do like it in the sense that our coaching staff shouldn’t ever be giving up.. and really neither should the players. Yah, I’d like Tambellini to make it as difficult as possible to win, however, just so we can get Hall or Seguin ;) But what good would coaches be if they weren’t trying everything.

  30. Bostonoiler says:

Now heres my theory. If you get Hall and Bring up Eberle and Svensson next season, do you keep Mike Comrie? I say yes. He is a vet who has been through though times and been to a cup, best part is he CAN score 20+ goals a season. I think you let Potulny play in the AHL next season and bring back Comrie to have a vet other than Horcoff and Hemsky at forward.

    Penner-Gagner-Hemsky
    Svensson-Hall-Eberle
    Comrie-Horcoff-Stone
    Storts-Brule-Nilsson
    JFJ

trade cogs and O’Sullivan for a top defender.

  31. Steve-O says:

Just a note, but I added MC79Hockey to the blogroll as I realized I hadn’t earlier, and he writes some good stuff.

    The last three are gooders.

  32. Racki says:

Sounds like Filatov wants out of Columbus. Not mentioning this because I want him on our team… seems like he’s a bad apple. If he wants out of CBJ, I’d assume he’d not want to play here anyways. And plus unless we suddenly unloaded a bunch of young skill players, he’d be battling for TOI here anyways.
Anyways, just thought it was an interesting story, especially considering several have suggested trading for him in the intraw3b land

    Article: http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2010/01/filatov-might-not-be-hitch-ing-ride.html

  33. Mr.Majestyk says:

If we finish last this season and there is no progression made by our players(the ones we intend to keep moving forward)I consider the season a complete failure, even if we end up getting Hall.

As for Filatov, I think you might start to see a mutiny in Columbus. Hitchcock is past his expiry date I think.

  34. Racki says:

Another good coach who stuck around too long? :) The “I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE HAPPY FOR FIRING MACT!” guys have been coming out of the woodwork lately. If Hitchcock is past his expiry date after 3 years, I don’t feel bad for being part of a crowd that wanted MacT fired. I hadn’t paid much attention to the Jackets, have there been other talks of players getting frustrated with Hitch?

  35. Mr.Majestyk says:

Its just pure speculation on my part Racki. After all the time he spent in Dallas, he hasn’t been the kind of coach that lasts for too long before guys tune him out. They made great strides under Hitch, but I just wonder how his defensive system is going to work out with all the offensive prospects and young players the team has coming in.

  36. Steve-O says:

Racki: I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE HAPPY FOR FIRING MACT!

    who, me?

  37. zackman35 says:

Speculation as per TSN: Biron may be shipped off soon due to the recovery of IvebeeninjuredmorethanIveplayed-ietro. Do we relieve JDD buy acquiring Biron or do we keep riding or rookie goalie?

Me: I’d rather be up for tanking. If anything send over a third rounder and maybe a reddox (similar to Garon deal).

Before next season can we please sign a top defensive d-man… Looking at Khabi’s record and kinda suprised the contract he received, sure he’s great but he’s also played for some great teams, well the Hawks anyways.

  38. Racki says:

You know, I was on the Biron train when it was a case of Biron or Roloson. At this stage, I have to kind of wonder about it. What advantage would we get out of a year of Biron? Mercy? Honest question… I consider us out of the playoffs for this season, guaranteed, despite the dreams/hopes of the guys paid to keep those dreams/hopes alive. And really, that’s the only reason to acquire Biron.

Unless by some miracle we can get out of the Khabi contract, and Biron becomes our guy… I’d be fine with that.

I’d also be fine with Biron next year if we didn’t have Khabi here. But it doesn’t seem to make sense to take him now.

  39. Mr.Majestyk says:

Biron is only signed to a 1 year deal isn’t he? For that reason I’d gladly take him. JDD can’t just play every game this season. We need someone who can share the load with him, and we need to remain competitive every night(win or lose)or this season becomes detrimental to development of our players.

  40. NorwegianOiler says:

Cheers hombres! I’m back (and have been for a few weeks) and watching games the nocturnal way again. Is it me or has Racki gone off hope lane and driven into pity road here? :D Too bad I could not meet any of you guys, though I was joined by another bunch of scoundrels entirely, but it won’t be the last time I go :D

Wrote up a brief account on the trip here: http://fans.oilers.nhl.com/topic/7914

    Travel on!

  41. Racki says:

Welcome back N.O.! And, no, I’m not on “pity road”. I’m just being realistic. The Oilers are sitting 16 points out. I think 91 points would be setting the bar low as far as the magic number to get into the playoffs (it hasn’t been any lower than that in the West since the lockout). To hit that mark, they’d have to have a 0.692 win% (25-10-4 for example). This of course is all courtesy of the Playoff Chance Calculator.

Don’t mistake my acceptance (if I can use that term, since it’s not 100% guaranteed) of missing the playoffs with bailing on the team. I still am a proud Oil fan.

I am a bit torn though as to whether to cheer for the Taylor Hall sweepstakes or cheer for this team to at least half-ass their way to 10th or so, so that the season isn’t completely demoralizing to them. But any hopes of making the playoffs are pretty unrealistic.

Even in that miracle run (which was great) back in 07/08, they only hit 0.615 from this same point forward (23-14-2).

Obviously they aren’t mathematically eliminated, and I applaud you blind followers who still have hopes that this team will make the playoffs. But I’m just trying to be realistic here and think of what is good for the team next year. Now whether that is “tanking for Taylor”, or what Mr. Majestyk describes (remaining competitive nightly to help with development), that is the question.

But ya, to sum up.. still a huge fan, but I’ve abandoned playoff hopes a while ago.

  42. Racki says:

Btw, I guess you folks don’t need any help to keep the dream alive, but thought I’d fire one piece of positivity in that is related. Last year the Blues went 0.705 (24-8-7) in this same stretch to make the playoffs. So yah.. it’s possible. But you have to play pretty damn good over that stretch. Those OTL helped carry them over too.

  43. NorwegianOiler says:

    Bleh, error.

  44. NorwegianOiler says:

Hehe. I hardly think there are many, of sound mind, who’d not book their tee times now – but people who claimed that “effort” was all it took in a loss to make them happy must be rather confused as what to do now. Because, in my opinion, it is not the effort but the smarts (as Quinn also seems to think) that’s stopping them now. Mathematics or not, it’s quite easy to see that the playoffs are a way off – but Majestyk’s “remaining competitive” is certainly a key – there is already a culture of losing (not endorsed losing, but an essence of inevitable defeat) around the team, that must be killed as soon as possible. Problem is, fans have already started to draw up lineups with Taylor Hall in them, and I think that’s another scary way of setting oneself up for disappointment for a number of reasons. Hall, is he that good? Will we even get a top 5 pick, let alone 1st overall? And, would we maybe be better off picking Cam Fowler, seeing as our top 2 defensemen are getting older…? Elite d-man over elite forward any day, assuming all things are equal.

These are the most trying times, for fans and management, because it is so easy to lose hold of what you want to build, how you want to do it and who you want to include when pressure to win is so imminent. I would not be disappointed to see quite a few players moved, but we should still have a set of ‘untradeable’ players to build around, and of course identifying role players we want to keep around if they’re deemed good enough. Right now it seems that the general feeling is that all is lost and everyone are up for grabs…

What I meant by the pity road comment is that you’ve always been the realist with an optimistic twist (looking forward to certain elements fitting in) – yet there has been a good dash of pure misery lately ;) Maybe it’s just my perception! :D
I feel a long post on this subject coming, but haven’t got the time today. Soon ;)

And PS: applauding the blind? Nice little jab there my friend ;)

  45. Steve-O says:

    agreed

    just say NO to tanking

  46. Racki says:

Actually that wasn’t a slag at you or anyone (the blind followers comment). And it was the wrong term anyways, but I couldn’t think of the one I was looking for ;) But I meant those who will cheer this team on a run at the playoffs no matter how bleak things get.

Anyways, again, I think you’re mistaking my comments. Yes, I’ve really written the season off.. but I’ll continue to watch every game (minus the last PPV, but that’s because Canada was playing… not a tough choice at all and poor scheduling on the Oilers part, timing it with the gold medal final game of the WJHC).

Also, there was a poll here a bit ago about which players to hang on to. Not everyone feels that we should completely blow the team up. In fact, I think you’ve got the completely wrong impression. There probably are those who want that. But I know the general consensus around here (where people generally tend to be a bit more level headed) was that certain types need to go (guys like Moreau, for example) and certain types need to stay.

The poll is in the archive. Fourth one down, currently. “If you’re a GM re-building the Oilers, who are the “must keep” players (except in a deal you can’t refuse)?”. There were some “everyone is fair game” voters, but there were more who actually picked some names on the list of people to stay.

Also, I do find the addition of Hall in people’s lineups to be pretty funny, myself. People seem to talk, first of all, like we’ve already got him picked, and second of all, that he’ll play next year (which isn’t too unrealistic). I personally think the Oilers are going to make a run at it which will pull them out of the bottom 2 for sure.. maybe out of the bottom 5.

Would I like Taylor Hall though, or Fowler, or Seguin? I’m not going to lie.. hell yes. The playoffs dreams are over, and I still have a firm belief that we might as well get something to show for it. But there’s also something to be said about the crushing effect that would come about from the team hitting rock bottom.

But regardless, I think significant changes to the NON core of this team are needed. I’ve said it 100 times if you look around… it’s not the core players I want changed… it’s the complementary players – the Moreaus, Pisanis, etc. And then of course they need to make a decision on which small forwards to keep. For example, Kovalchuk doesn’t fix this team, although I bet a lot of people think that and want us to trade for him. However, I think that signing some gritty vets (some size in there, some pk ability.. some offense), a tough more defensive minded d-man or two, and god help us a goaltender (but that won’t happen as we are likely stuck with Khabibulin’s contract).

I’m not talking about any big name players here. I’m talking get us a Boynton, a Malhotra, a Whitney (as an example), and jettison the dead weight.

  47. MetalOil says:

Rumor out of Calgary is that Dion Phaneuf has asked for a trade out of Calgary. Sutter has denied this but who knows… If true it would make me very happy!!!! it has happened to us many times now and its about time it happens to our rivals down south.
