Try not to get too out of hand. Obviously keep it clean still, and keep it legal. Other than that, feel free to talk about whatever you like here.

I now have Arnott on the IR, to join Souray. Getzlaf still isn’t doing a thing, and my goalies are depressing me.

dude, don’t even talk to me about injuries.

I have Franzen on the IR, with Datsyuk and Vanek hurt as well. and my ringer fantasy goalie from last year has sucked balls so far this year.(Thomas)

…. Still open to trades ๐Ÿ˜›

  4. Steve-O says:

…and Savard and Gonchar both out for 4-6 weeks.

Damn it! And yahoo isn’t putting them available for IR yet.

yahoo won’t until the teams officially do, and then they are usually pretty quick with updating it, but for some odd reason the teams themselves sometimes seem to not be in any hurry to put them on IR.

anyways, OilerTyler, I proposed a trade to you, go approve/deny it!!! gogogogogo!

  6. OilerTyler says:

I really had to think about that trade gr8one, but I just couldn’t accept it. I just feel like Getzlaf is starting off the season slow due to his off season surgery, and will get back into form soon and start tearing up the league. He also takes alot of penalty minutes which is great for my pool. Really good offer though, it took me quite some time to think about. I hope Getzlaf starts playing good soon so I don’t look dumb for denying this.

For anyone wondering, it was Mikko Koivu and Rene Bourque for Ryan Getzlaf.

  7. Racki says:

SO some of you may have heard about the hostage taking downtown. Steve-O, Trogdor, and I had front row seats to watching all the cop cars pulling in and what not. Wow, what a crazy situation. As far as I know it was still going on when we went home. Hopefully that all ends soon and peacefully.

  8. DropIt says:

    Say whaaat!?!

That’s crazy…interesting to find out what he did that would result in holding a hostage.

  9. Racki says:

From what I understand, the hostage taker is “mad at the world” (apparently his words) and demanding they bring in a doctor who ruined his life. This is all happening at the WCB building. Found this: “The Edmonton Journal newspaper quoted an acquaintance of the man as saying he is a former construction worker with a long-held grudge against the board that stems from a botched knee examination.”

  10. Racki says:

Well it’s all over with, and all hostages were released peacefully. Shows how easy it is to infiltrate an office building downtown though, as the hostage taker wasn’t actually a worker there. They have a swipe card system in the building, but obviously he must’ve just followed someone in.

  11. Steve-O says:

Is versteeg tough? He just went after mitchell for the hit of toews. I thought he was just a scorer

  12. Racki says:

I just saw that hit on Toews. Damn man, stay down, Rocky!

  13. chucker says:

Steve-O: Is versteeg tough? He just went after mitchell for the hit of toews. I thought he was just a scorer

Not sure, but Mitchell isn’t as tough as he plays. He’s not a great fighter.

  14. Racki says:

For those that missed it: Ruutu hits Tucker, lights out after hitting head on ice.

At first, it looked like a pretty routine hit to me (given that Tucker was close to the boards) but it would seem that Tucker first hit his head on the glass (likely rocking him enough to prevent what was coming next) and then hit down face first on the ice. Ouch.

Ruutu got a 3-game suspension for this. Too long? Too Short? Just right? I’d say it is just right. Not too short. Hits like that happen often. Yes, Tucker had his back turned, but generally when a guy is up against the boards like that, you’re not expecting to knock him the eff out. I don’t think there was any particular intent to injure. But that all said, hitting from behind is still hitting from behind no matter how close to the boards a player is.

  15. chucker says:

I don’t know Racki. I agree hits like that happen all the time, but I think when a player makes that hit and the other player has to leave on a stretcher, it should be an automatic 10 games. Hitting from behind is out of control and players clearly are not affraid of the consequences. This needs to change.

  16. Racki says:

That’s definitely a fair argument. I’m kind on the fence on it. It is a hit from behind, yes, and it’s hard to say that something like that is just Ruutu finishing his check or more than that. But I guess what it boils down to is that Tucker was in a vulnerable position (back turned) and really that hit isn’t legal whether there was intent to hurt or not.

I think 10 games would be too stiff for something like that, but if you’re trying to set an example for everyone, then that would definitely do it.

  17. chucker says:

I think examples need to be set. Way to many players are getting head injuries from this stuff. That has an effect on them for the rest of their lives. Ten might be lots but it needs to be significantly more than 3. Automatic 5 pending review maybe?

  18. OilerTyler says:

Oh boy, looks like I am facing up against Racki this week in the pool, have mercy on me please

And also, Nilsson had the sixth best hit of the week according to (The one in the Columbus game where he hit Filatov in open ice)

  19. Racki says:

In the last round we just had, DropIt and I were actually pretty close for the whole way up until Saturday (I think) where I somehow managed to steal all but 1 of the points. Anything can happen!

My goalies have been sucking (except Anderson), so go for Goalie points all you can.. easy points on me most weeks. ๐Ÿ˜›

  20. DropIt says:

Ya, not cool Racki…you ruined my week ๐Ÿ˜›

I was hoping to take something away from that week, but nothing… I’m not impressed with my squad though :(

  21. OilerTyler says:

My goalie let in 6 goals against the leafs yesterday

  22. Steve-O says:

My goalie let in 6 goals against the leafs yesterday/facepalm

my goalie lets 5+ against the flames and other crappy teams but shuts out the oilers

    thats not cool

  23. Steve-O says:

and now my goalie lets in 5 goals in the first game of the week and decides to get injured for the rest of the week

    really really not cool…

  24. Hockey Noob says:

    Hey Racki,

Thread jacking again here, lol… I watched the Colorado/Calgary game tonight. Colorado fought back from a two-goal deficit that occurred in the first minute of play.

That Wolski guy is off to a good start this season. He looks like a pretty impressive kid for sure. Anderson faced a lot of shots, but the Avalanche benefited from his solid rebound control and really limited Calgary’s scoring chances.

I noticed that Colorado did a pretty good job on the PK from preventing the Flames from doing their Ryan Smyth impersonations by tipping in shots from anywhere.

    Moved by Racki

  25. LateNightOilFan says:

So I was watching the Halifax Mooseheads play Val D’Or tonight on the local cable TV station and in between periods they interviewed Chris McCarthy who is an Oiler scout. Sounds like he’s in the Maritimes primarily for the World Junior A Hockey Challenge that is going on right now in Summerside PEI. There are 2 Cdn teams (West & East) along with USA, Russia, Belarus & Sweden. Apparently tonight the 2 Cdn teams are playing a semi-final game and another Oiler Scout is watching that game while he is in Halifax. Not sure who he was scouting tonight, both Val D’Or and Halifax are pretty weak this season. He mentioned Moncton has several strong players this year including the goalie Domingue that scouts are watching so could be he planned on going to Moncton but their weekend games were cancelled due to the swine flu. He said the depth of talent in the QMJHL was down for this coming draft and he was expecting more players to be drafted from the US and Europe this year. I assume the OHL and WHL would still be strong, the Q is always lower in depth.

With respect to the Oilers he said the scouting philosophy hasn’t really changed even though the coaching philosophy changed. He noted it was a big change in goal and behind the bench, but the biggest adjustment is that the players are still trying to figure out what Pat Quinn wants from them. He said they are going through some growing pains right now and they are hoping that the upcoming lengthy road trip will give them an opportunity to bond and gel together.

    Just thought I would share!

  26. Racki says:

Interesting stuff about the Oilers players – growing pains, bonding etc.

  27. zackman35 says:

Hey Racki, would you be able to put up a depth chart? It doesn’t have to be too deep or anything but just something to show who’s on the current roster, who has been called up and where we’re sitting on the injury reserve.

Oh and if anyone would like to see it, I made a jersey “Mock” up….

Rexall propaganda or clever marketing? I kinda wish they’d save the NHL teams’ retro’s for special nights like jersey retirements or have it one month of the year in retro. I’d rather see more modern/creative jerseys for the “third jersey category”…

  28. Racki says:

Bob McKenzie said this on his twitter:

Fla puts MacIntyre. Want him in the minors to get in game shape. Arnason clears waivers.

I’m not sure what he meant by the first sentence, which is obviously incomplete. I presume he meant either they put him back on waivers (in hopes to clear and be sent to their farm team) or that he’s been sent down for a conditioning stint (i.e. no waivers). Not sure if they can do that though.

  29. Haboiler says:

SMAC needs to clear waivers in order to be sent down to Florida’s AHL team in Rochester. He said today that FLA wants him to get in game shape.

  30. gr8one says:

So, since I have Justin Williams in a couple of my pools it got me thinking about last years trade that brought us POS.

I know thw trade was more complicated than what I’m breaking it down as since got a pick that we flipped for a rental of Kotalik, and it wasn’y “officially” a three team trade.

anyways for simplicity sake, lets just say it was Williams for O’Sully and O’Sully for Cole.

So, from our and L.A.’s stand point I’d say we both came out on top, and Lombardi is actually looking especially good considering how JW is playing so far in L.A.

what are your thoughts, knowing what you know now, would you still make that trade? would Carolina?

  31. Racki says:

I always liked Erik Cole. Basically we swapped a guy who has trouble finishing but does everything else really well for another guy who is slumping (in the goals department), but has more long-term upside, is a fair bit younger, but is nowhere near as physical and not at the same level of defensive play just yet. I’d say it was a worthwhile deal for sure. I miss Cole’s presence here and he would have been a good player under Quinn though, I think. So it’s a little tough for me to say I’d do it again. But I like O’Sullivan despite his struggles. Long term it looks to be the better deal. Short term, I’d say I’d prefer Cole.

Would Carolina? Hmm.. you know they love Cole in Raleigh. I see their trade as Williams for Cole. I think they’d do an O’Sullivan for Cole trade, just because of the style of game Cole brings. But a Williams for Cole.. tough one, given how each have played so far this year (although Cole was out due to injury for a bit).

  32. OilerTyler says:

Racki, I just checked our your trade offer in the pool. I am already two players over the limit, and am trying to shed some players to get Souray off of the IR, so I can’t accept a two for one deal at this point. It was a good offer though.

  33. Racki says:

Ahh, no worries. I needed to do the same as you (pulling Huselius off) and figured I might as well try to get something for Mike Comrie, whom I have now been placed on waivers ๐Ÿ˜‰

  34. OilerTyler says:

I am proud of myself for drafting Drew Doughty in our pool in the 17th round, 199th overall

  35. Racki says:

Thats a pretty damn good pick. I was just bragging to Trogdor the other day too about my Anze Kopitar pick in the 7th round.. #1 point getter so far. wooo

  36. OilerTyler says:

7th round!? How did i miss him?

My team had 3 goals, 12 assists, 9 powerplay points tonight. If Hiller would play better, I would be destroying Trogdor this week.

  37. Steve-O says:

i had penner in the last round, third last pick

…and then dropped him for nothing 3 games in

  38. Racki says:

  39. Racki says:

Also, anyone catch the crazyness in Anaheim after their win? Scott Neidermayer tosses his stick in the crowd and the fans brawl over it. Basically 3 or 4 people grabbed it all at once… two guys and their wives are in there, and it got to the point where a couple of knuckles were chucked. Talk about embarassing. Neidermayer looked pretty baffled by it and one of the other fans was trying to apologize to him by the looks of it. Click the link for the video. Listen to the interview with Neidermayer here.

  40. LateNightOilFan says:

Just came across this article about MacTavish – he’s going for his MBA. Pretty good article (well except about some inaccuracy about Roli being relegated to backup in his final season with the Oilers, apparently the reporter forgot about last year), talks about his time at UMassLowell as well – thought I would link it here if anyone is interested.

  41. gr8one says:

so in another pool I’m in, I sent a league member a trade proposal me giving him Vinny and Vanek for Savard and Semin.

he said no, but countered with him giving me Savard straight up for Antropov.

    I obviously accepted.

  42. Racki says:

Wow, Keith Ballard just did something boneheaded. Accidentally decapitated Vokoun (his own goalie) trying to smash his stick on the net… ok not literally decapitated. But Vokoun was taken off on a stretcher. Chances are he rattled his brain cage pretty good. Wow, that’s got to make a guy feel like a REAL ass.

    Video here:

  43. gr8one says:

yeah, I just saw that too.

pretty crazy shit. I hope Vokoun’s ok.

  44. Racki says:

Apparently his ear was cut, but you don’t generally get carted off on a stretcher for a cut ear.. so who knows just yet. I’m sure he had his bell rung pretty good.

  45. Racki says:

    Shameless plug #3984:
Alright, so a forum called “The NHL Arena” is hosting a poll asking for people to vote on their favorite blog. Show your support, if you like, here.

Looks like some pretty stiff competition though!

  46. Bostonoiler says:

Not the best win, but I’ll take it. Hoping for a solid complete effort on Wednesday. Horcoff with another SO winner and tonight he even scored a regulation goal! Penner scored his 16th (it was changed from Vish to Penner according to Tencer.) Thats big. JDD played very well for the Oil tonight. Happy to see a 3 game winning streak going right now. Heres to making it 4!

BTW: Colorado beat St. Louis 4-0, meaning we move ahead of them in the standings. Keep an eye on the Minny-yotes game too.

  47. Racki says:

Need you folks to drop a vote here for a video for a fellow Oilers Fan. Tyler is from Saskatchewan and won the Sportsnet Connected Fan contest last year. He ended up taking his bro, a buddy of mine and me and we met the Sportsnet crew and such (he also won a nice team auto’d jersey that is seen in the video). For a guy living in Saskatchewan, he sure has a lot of Oilers gear.

Anyways, go here and vote 5 stars for “Daddy is Connected”:

  48. Racki says:

Hey everyone, Norweigan Oiler is in Edmonton on Monday and wants to hang out with some of you losers. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So, he will be in town for the following games: dec 15 (v LA), dec 17 (ppv vs Nash), dec 19 (v Caps). He suggested going to a pub to catch the game… so, O’Byrnes, Hudsons, The Pint, are ideas….. I think a lot of the people that use this site are outside of Edmonton (odd how that is), but I’ll leave the invite open to anyone interested. If you have any ideas as to when/where, post here!

  49. gr8one says:

    Wish I could be there!

  50. Bostonoiler says:

Speaking of heading to edmonton… and my uncle might go up to see the last Avs-Oil game in town as he is an Avs fan. I only get to see them live every other year which blows so this would be real cool. I’m going to NY next year. hittin up the garden for the game in there.
