Where will Justin Schultz land? http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=398941

McKenzie: The Anaheim Ducks know the jig is up there. They know that Schultz, who they selected in the second round of the 2008 Draft, will become a free agent this Sunday. Once Ryan Suter and Zach Parise are gone as free agents, Schultz, the blue chip prospect from the University of Wisconsin, who should be a top-four defenceman for a long time in the NHL, is going to be one of the most sought after free agents. There’s a strong belief that he wants to play on a Canadian team, and one that will give him the opportunity to be a major contributor right off the hop. The Edmonton Oilers fit that bill perfectly and there’s a lot of speculation that Schultz might be receptive to that, but nobody knows for sure until Schultz starts talking.

  2. Racki says:

That’s interesting that McKenzie really thinks we’ll land Schultz. I just hope the Oilers don’t overpay. Give him a one-way deal, so that he can get his NHL money wherever he plays. But don’t throw him a $4M contract when no one has seen him play at the NHL level yet.

  3. dawgtoy says:

It will be an entry level contract, we can’t overpay really.

    Racki:

  4. Racki says:

Yah i keep forgetting about that, Dawg.. (Although really, with bonuses, you could still overpay.. just it won’t be all that bad.. under $4M anyways)

  5. dawgtoy says:

Like you indicate, one way contract and he want a guarantee at playing. He at worst would take Potter’s roster spot.

  6. Mr.Majestyk says:

Blue Jackets acquire Bobrovsky for three draft picks as per TSN. I guess we won’t be getting him.

  7. dawgtoy says:

Bobrovski to CBJ for picks? Strange gamble IMO. One second rounder and two fourths for Bobrovski. Ok Tambellini, make me a happy Oiler fan today.

  8. Mr.Majestyk says:

The only pick i’d be concerned about would be the 45th. The other picks are later so just as much if not more of a gamble. One belongs to Phoenix too i believe.

  9. Racki says:

At first, my reaction to the signing was… “what the hell, where was Tambo on that one??” Then I realized that Bobrovsky’s numbers were actually quite bad this year. His numbers were really great last year, but he hasn’t proven that he’s more than a flash in the pan.. like Jim Carey, et al.

The Oilers definitely needed a goaltender, but could probably stand to look elsewhere.

  10. Racki says:

    Couple notes…

In crazy news, word is that the New York Islanders offered the Columbus Blue Jackets all of their picks in the 2012 draft for the #2 overall pick. That works out to:

    To CBJ: Pick Nos. 4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185.
    To NYI: Pick No. 2

Some are questioning the sanity of either GM here. Some are saying it isn’t really that bad, given that later picks rarely work out.

Me, I’d say it leans more towards the insane that a team would offer every pick just to move up 2 spots to draft a D-man that not many seem to really pinpoint as a GREAT d-man (good, but not great) when there are lots of other D available. Why not just hang on to that pick, take the next best ranked guy, and target some random long shots? I think that’s what the Isles ended up doing.. but I don’t think that would have been a good move by them. Apparently Mike Milbury offered all his picks in the past once too to move up in the draft.

In other news, Paul Stastny apparently is being shopped by the Avs. I will start by saying i think he’d be a fabulous addition to the Oilers. I’d say give up Sam Gagner, and an NHL D, and perhaps a pick or one of our less glamorous prospects…. however, Stastny’s $6.6M cap hit is painful. I don’t think we could afford to make the move.

  11. dawgtoy says:

Here is the list of qualifying offers.

    Devan Dubnyk
    Sam Gagner
    Linus Omark
    Theo Peckham
    Jeff Petry
    Alex Plante
    Chris VandeVelde

Not really surprised by this list.

  12. Racki says:

Yup, no surprises. I think Omark is gone, but at least it will be (somewhat) on our terms since he’ll remain RFA after we qualified him. We may lose him for nothing, but there’s at least still a chance we get something.

The Oilers should try and sign Barker to a cheeeap 2-way deal and play him in OKC. lol

  13. dawgtoy says:

If you could get Hjalmarsson + from Chicago for Gagner. Then grab Stastny from Col for Hemsky + + (?), I think this team would be on the verge of something. Sign Smyth, then maybe add a Tootoo, and hope for Schultz. That lineup would work. I think Chicago would do the Gagner deal easily. The trick would be Stastny. Tootoo would come here I think. Schultz is a crap shoot, you make your pitch, and introduce him to the four Horsemen. He holds all the cards.

  14. Racki says:

Off the top of my head, that sounds like a lot of salary coming our way, in the long term. But the deal does involve moving Hemsky’s 5M (?). I think Stastny would be superb with Hall and Yakupov though (or Eberle if we need to dial back the minutes for the Yak Attack).

Hjalmarsson.. I like him, but he’s nearly at $4M on this expiring deal. I don’t think he provides any more than a guy like Ladislav Smid, so if he’s looking for around $4M, I’d pass and just go with the cheaper option Andy Sutton, or give Peckham another shot. But if he’ll take a pay cut to no more than $3M, I’m listening.

Tootoo, I personally think is a little overrated. I did like him once, but honestly I don’t even notice his impact in Predators games anymore.

Schultz, I definitely like the idea of potential top 4, and a righty (which I can never stress enough the need for).

So, let’s say those two are added at the cost of Hemsky .. maybe even we’ll consider Gagner gone too..

    Hall Stastny Yakupov
    ??(Harsky?) Nuge Eberle
    Smyth Horcoff Jones
(rebuffed 4th line.. I think this really needs work)

    Smid Petry
    Whitney J. Schultz
    Sutton/Peckham N. Schultz

Still a bit week on D, but getting better. I really think our line 4 needs work though.. I can sort of see the need for Tootoo, but not quite offering the kind of skillset that I think we need there.

  15. dawgtoy says:

Tootoo is a pain in the ass to play against when he’s on his game . So providing he is being a pest and hitting, he bring a dimension to the team that we currently don’t have , and need. His antics drive teams crazy.
Salary for Stastny is high and likely why he’s being shopped. He has two years left at 6.6 so it’s doable provided Hemsky goes the other way. I’d even include next years first to sweeten the pot if necessary, not really sure what Colorado wants/needs.
If the rumor that we’ve offered Gagner + for Hjalmarsson are true, he’ll be an Oiler very soon. Yeah he is alot like Smid in many respects, but we have holes to fill and he has game.
I don’t like the idea of trading Gagner for D, because he is our only 2nd line C. The question mark then becomes what do you do to fill that hole? Hall at C? That’s a gamble that may work, but what if it doesn’t. So unless you make a trade, we become even more vulnerable at the C position. If something like this was to be attempted, you’d need to land Stastny first, then once the 2c position is filled, a move can be made to move Gagner for D. The key is landing a C first if Gagner is being moved for help on te back end.

  16. Racki says:

Hmm, I didn’t realize actually until now that Hjalmarsson is signed until 2013/14. For some reason, I just assumed he was a free agent. $3.5M per year isn’t too bad. It’s higher than I think he should get, but it’s not terrible.

I’d be pretty hesitant to trade Gagner for a D too. But I guess you have to give to get. Like you, I’d only do it if we had something lined up already. I’m not sure about Hall at center. It’s worth a good look, for sure. But there’s no guarantee that he’ll be OK there. We could end up creating a big hole after filling one with what I wouldn’t consider much authority.

But, I will say I think we’re a much better team with Stastny and Hjalmarsson than we are with Hemsky and Gagner. However, Hjalmarsson is another guy who is accustomed to playing the left side on D, and I wouldn’t want to force a guy into his off position. Not that he can’t play there, but I’m thinking I’d still prefer trying out Justin Schultz instead mostly based on our need for a RHD since trading away Gilbert.

  17. Racki says:

Matt Carle is another target of ours, apparently. I’d give him consideration. Seems like he can line up on both sides too, which is a plus. He, unfortunately, will likely come at a price tag higher than what I think is his value though.

  18. gr8one says:

oh boy…Guillaume Latendresse and Peter Mueller not qualified…Intriguing options for Oilers, potential low risk high reward if they can put concussions behind them?

  19. Racki says:

Latendresse I’d take a stab at because I think we are pretty weak on the left side, and he’s got size to spare. From what I understand, he plays both wings. He’s missed a TONNE of hockey between the groin injury and the concussion. Can he pull it back together? Hard to really say, but I’d give it a shot. Sign him for a 1 year deal and play him with Nuge and either Eberle or Yakupov:

    Hall Gagner Eberle
    Latendresse Nuge Yakupov

    Or:
    Hall Nuge Eberle
    Latendresse Gagner Yakupov

I bet Latendresse racks up 25+ goals playing with either of those lines, if he stays healthy.

As for Mueller, I’d be a lot more nervous there, as he just hasn’t been the same since that first concussion.

He maybe becomes an option if we are moving Gagner, and if we can’t land a guy like Stastny or if Hall won’t work at center (Since there’s been a lot of discussion around that option).

  20. Racki says:

    Another option..

    Latendresse Nuge Eberle
    Hall Gagner Yakupov

I think I like the idea of Latendresse because he should be able to move up and down the lineup well.

  21. gr8one says:

As much as I like Stastny and wouldn’t be totally against his acquisition, but I feel we really need a physical presence with size down the middle to really become a contender going forward.

Part of me wonders if it might not be wise to throw a shitload of stuff at Anaheim for an offer on Getzlaf.

If they are indeed trading Ryan, they very well might be going full rebuild, Koivu and Selanne aren’t going to be back next year, and they have a big young Center coming up in Holland, so offer up say Gagner, PRV, Smid and Our first overall next year for Getzlaf and see what happens, contingent upon Getzlaf resigning with us of course, and since he’s a good ol’ Saskatchewan boy who’s brother plays in the CFL, why not right?( I love Smid but you gotta give to get)

Say Hemsky and Peckham to Chicago for Hjalmarsson(replaces Smid) and Bickell.

sign Gaustad, get rid of Belanger for a bag of pucks and bring Lander along slow.

Bring in Garrison and J. Schultz

    Hall Getzlaf Eberle
    Latendresse Nuge Yakupov
    Bickell Horcoff Harski
    Eager Gaustad Jones

    Whitney Petry
    Garrison Schultz
    Schultz Hjalmarsson

    Sutton

I sadly have no thoughts on ways to shore up our goaltending..Having Khabi as even a backup at this point just seems insane, but I see no other alternative.

Anyways, welcome to my 2012/13 EA Sports Edmonton Oilers!!

lol, sorry, I get carried away sometimes in pipedreamleand.

  22. Racki says:

fyi, you’re pick in the FHL entry draft, gr8one! But I see you are at max roster (35 players) and therefore have no room to draft. Since you technically have 12 hours to draft, it would be good to know if you intend to try and free up a spot in that timeframe, or will just drop your picks.

  23. gr8one says:

    Racki:

I thought I couldn’t pick because I have no roster spots?

  24. Racki says:

gr8one: Sorry, I edited my post above after because I didn’t notice you were at 35 players. No, you can’t draft.. unless you intend to and think you can move 1 player to another team within the next 12 hours…?

If not, let me know and we’ll move on to the next guy

  25. gr8one says:

    you want a player? lol

  26. Racki says:

haha, I will take a look.. hop on the forum so we can PM. I’ll let you know if there’s a deal to be had. As luck would have it, I actually DO need a player.

    http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/06/27/detroit-red-wings-guarantee-roster-spot-to-justin-schultz-press-report/
    And I quote:
“CBC has reported that Toronto has already had a shot at signing Schultz at the time of the NHL draft, but the player decided to go to free agency: “Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman wrote this week that he heard the Ducks allowed Leafs GM Brian Burke a window to sign Schultz at the NHL draft on the weekend but the latter passed.”

This is intriguing to me. He had the opp to sign with TO, but chose to still go UFA. That likely means they weren’t his first choice, or it would likely be over before it started. Edm, Van, Nyr and Det must be the front runners. Wow I hope we can land this fish.

  28. Racki says:

Detroit is out of the running per a Detroit media guy.

It actually sounds a lot like it is either the Canucks (highly favorite) or Edmonton.

New York Rangers and another team were once interested too, but I think Schultz’s strong bias towards western Canada will make it either Van or EDM. Leafs are less likely, but still a shot there.. especially with Gardiner there.

  29. chucker says:

Yeah the Gardiner factor is huge I think. From what I have heard that trade is the reason he refused to sign in Anaheim. Thing is does he want to play for Carlyle on a team that has no direction? Hopefully not. I also hope that ice time is a concern for him. Van has lots of big minute guys out there.

  30. Racki says:

Luckily we sent Hall down there, and he has a pretty enormous set of powerful lips.

  31. Racki says:

Not that it really matters what TSN.ca visitors think.. Schultz will do what he wants to do.. but I take it as a bit of a good sign that on their poll asking where people think Schultz will land, 39.8% say Edmonton. 2nd place is Vancouver (the team I voted) with 23.6% and then Toronto at 21.6%.

Interesting, considering Edmonton likely has the 3rd highest number of “home” voters, at best, of all 5 teams listed.

  32. Racki says:

Jonathan Willis has a good article up that states why the Canucks might not be the best bet for Justin Schultz here: link.

  33. chucker says:

Schultz could fit well in Van, as much as I hate that. He could be used and protected more there than here. However, if he wants to hit all those bonuses, he needs lots of PP and ice time like he will get here.

  34. Racki says:

    Wow

Darren Dreger: Wayne Gretzky confirms he called Justin Schultz as part of the Oilers push to sign the young d-man.Paul Coffey also part of the Edmtn pitch.

Pulling out the big guns, or what?? These are the benefits of being Kevin Lowe, multi-cup winner and former Oil Dynasty member. I guess it’s clear the Oilers really want this kid badly.

  35. john says:

Edmonton makes the most sense for a guy like Shultz; he is clearly a hot shot who wants the lime light & the opportunity to play in every situation. The Oilers are a no brainer for what he wants. The only potential downside to signing in Edm vs Van is the family connection in B.C. & there are no guarantees the Oil will see post season action whereas the Nucks are a shoe-in. He will likely only sign a 2-3yr deal anyway (as per his EL contract status) so unless he falls in love with Edmonton he could still take off for Van in a couple years plus he could instantly help the Oilers take a big step towards becoming a playoff team if that’s part of his needs.

  36. dawgtoy says:

Certainly might be a tremendous shot in the arm to this rebuilding franchise if “THE” most sought after UFA actually signed with the Edmonton Oilers. The first two big item things on the shopping list would be complete. Draft Nail – check. Sign Shultz – Check.

  37. Metal&Oil says:

    As per Redwings twitter feed:

The Red Wings have hired former EDM/NYR/VAN bench boss Tom Renney as an associate coach. Renney, 57, has signed a 3-year deal with the club.

Interesting. Didn’t see him going there. Glad he found a job and that’s a good place to be, no doubt about it.

  39. Metal&Oil says:

As per Oilers Twitter the Oilers have agreed to terms with Devan Dubnyk on a two year deal.

Petry for another 2 years as well :)

    Details still to come……..

  40. Racki says:

Robin Brownlee tweeted somethingoranother about Bob Stauffer talking about Jay Bouwmeester and Edmonton as a fit. Brownlee seemed to think that Stauffer was testing the waters or something, “framing an Oiler pitch to CGY for Bouwmeester on his Oilers Now show today”.

Not sure who goes the other way.. would be interesting. I don’t see the Flames trading that caliber of a player to us though.

  41. Metal&Oil says:

Since I am having trouble sleeping due to the heat and since I finally got to see the movie “Goon” the other day I thought I would share this link to a cool “Goon” based street fighter game:

    “Water down the donair sauce”

  42. chucker says:

I don’t think Bouweester would waive to come here. He was pretty adamant that he did not want to play here before he came to the shames. I woud rather sign Rozsival on a one year TBH.

  43. Racki says:

Yah he was, but lots can happen in a year, and I think it’s slowly becoming apparent that Edmonton is more desirable to play in. That said, Bouwmeester is also the type to shy away from the public light.. kind of surprising he went to Calgary, even. Really, who knows. Wouldn’t hurt to find out.

Pretty sure it had nothing to do with waterbowl type places or with Edmonton being shitty (although I’m sure it helped quite a bit), and everything to do with playing in the home town and the unrealistic shit storm he’d have to deal with being here.

  45. Racki says:

I presume you mean fishbowl, and really, what do you call playing in the home town and dealing with unrealistic shit storm? That’s exactly what I mean from shying away from public light. Doesn’t want the fan pressure.

  46. Metal&Oil says:

Looks like Jonathan Bernier has asked the defending Champs for a trade out of LA. http://ht.ly/ccHk5

This is a guy that I have long coveted as a solution to our crease problems. He actually asked for a trade last season but the Kings are holding out on him till they get what they deem as a sufficient return.

So What could we offer the Kings that they consider to be “Sufficient” ?

Maybe something along the lines of:

    To LA
-Ryan Jones (hate to include him as I love the guy but our LW is becoming very crowded and it would open a slot for ether Harti or Paajarvi)
    -Linus Omark

    To Edm
    Jonathan Bernier

If that does not work and the Kings stand pat then I would defiantly be all over him when hits RFA status next off season (The Kings will have to trade him as a RFA as their is no way he will sign a new contract with the Kings, Offer Sheet maybe ???)

  47. Racki says:

This is a deal that the Oilers HAVE to be in on. But the Oilers also won’t be in on the deal, I’m pretty sure. I’m not too confident that they are on top of these sorts of things. But hey, you never know.

He asked for a trade about a month ago….

  49. Metal&Oil says:

Yeah it is really just wishful thinking on my part as I have been a big fan of Bernier since his Jr days. Probably slim to none chance that he ends up here. Heck knowing Tamby, I would place a bigger bet that he is lining to sign Dominik Hasek to a 4 year deal (who is looking to make an NHL comeback at age 47 – http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=637856 ).

Screw the 35+ rule for contracts. How about a 45+ rule that makes you pay double the cap hit if the player retires during the course of his contract :)

  50. Steve-O says:

    Jonathan Bernier

I’d do that in a heartbeat…and only be slightly upset about giving up Omark.

Wouldn’t fly with LA though. They’d be looking for Gagner or Hemsky I would think. If you were able to pry one of their top D prospects out of there too that would be golden.
