Try not to get too out of hand. Obviously keep it clean still, and keep it legal. Other than that, feel free to talk about whatever you like here.

So I had a reply typed up and accidentally closed out of it.. grr :P

Anyways, I’ll keep it short this time.

Just wanted to clarify… my sole point of being for the deal is just that we’d be free of a big goalie contract next year. That means NO ROLI… and means NO KHABI. So we won’t have any concern with either of them as to how they play in a few years. Both goalies have been known to be inconsistent from year to year, so I would prefer to just start over next year with a guy in the 30-year-old range.

  2. Racki says:

Today’s rumblings now are saying that Ryan Getzlaf could be on the market. That is on the basis of Ducks GM Bob Murray saying that only Selanne and Koivu are untouchable for trades and everyone else is in play.

Soooooo… who do we give up for that? Do we have anything to offer that we’d actually WANT to offer? Obviously Hemsky for Getzlaf doesn’t get it done. Hemsky and Gagner for Getzlaf doesn’t get that done either.

So what should the Oilers give up?

David Staples Tweet about it brought the idea to my attention first, so have a read at his blog.

  3. Alan-NottsUK says:

Oilers should give up nothing, his contract is up the same time Ebs and Hall need resigning. I’d rather try and get Lubo back

Also fuck the NHLPA and Fehr, the realignment is off, so something which would have made the league more $, due to TV start times, and evened up the travel amoungst the teams in the east and west a little has been cancelled. Seems like Fehr has taken the first shot in the upcoming CBA discussions.

This could lead to the jets being stuck in the SE again which I’m sure the players would love, and also the NHL refusing to allow players the chance to play in the 2014 olympics.

Agreed on passing on Getz. He’s another one of those players that would have been nice to get about 3 years ago but at this point in his career he hasn’t got much to prove to anyone anymore & I find it highly unlikely coming to a struggling rebuild team would motivate him back to his former awesomeness. After seeing the Oilers give up countless leads & allowing several unanswered goals in rapid succession I am definitely of the opinion that this team will fail to continue moving forward unless we can get a couple more defencemen into the mix like Lubo & Suter. After that we need a bonafide #1 goalie! If these issues are not fully addressed in the next season or so, the Oilers are gonna turn into NYI 2.0, mark my words.

  5. Alan-NottsUK says:

We have moved forward a long way since last year.

The league position is really weird given the ‘team stats’ compared to last year

faceoffs 30th last year, 26th at the moment (2 rookie centermen too)

goals against per game last year 28th, 15th at the moment

goals for per game last year 28th, 25th at the moment

shots for per game we were 29th last year, 29th at the moment

shots against last year 21st, 20th at the moment

PK was 29th last year, 11th at the moment

PP was 27th last year, 2nd at the moment.

from that the only thing that really worries me is that we are still 29th in shots per game. We’re scoring more giving up less shots and goals and our PK and PP are lightyears better, gotta think if this keeps up results will come.

  6. hemmerlady says:

did not like the Marchand hit on Salo, very uncool. Possibly even less cool – Burrows spearing Thornton in the throat. I can’t stand Burrows – seems he can’t go one game without doing something totally cheap. Especially love when he throws his arms up in a faux-confused manner “What? whaattt?” as if he didn’t do anything.

I’ve been positive for most of this season. I think it stinks that this team has slumped itself into the basement again, rather than going on a hot streak and climbing higher… however, I still think this is a much improved team. I’m not calling for Renney’s head, or the heads of any of the other coaches.

I think the Oilers should be in the next phase of their rebuild.. that is, the phase where they do whatever it takes to win, even if winning only takes them to something such as 20th place in the standings. I don’t care who is in the draft this year. They need to do everything in their might to improve their standings.

I don’t even need to see them make the playoffs this year (which at this stage is really incredibly unlikely anyways). I just want to see signs of “give a damn” across the board from this team.

Some vets maybe need to be moved at the deadline or before free agency. The over 25s that definitely should not be moved: Smyth, Jones, Potter, Sutton, Eager.. to a slightly lesser extent: Whitney, Gilbert, Horcoff.

Guys I would definitely move: Barker, Khabibulin (I’m convinced he’s showcasing himself for a trade anyways.. but I don’t want to start rumors/conjecture)… to a lesser extent: Hemsky (we’d be selling too low though). Outside of that, I’m not too concerned.

Anyways, again, I’ll say that I think this team looks bad in the standings and has really struggled, but they’re a better team than last year… hang in there fans.

  8. john says:

I don’t really care about stats, the only one that matters is the #1-30 position in the overall standings & in that respect this team hasn’t really improved at all. There are some great feel-good stories of course; RNH gracing the top end of the NHL charts as an 18 yr old rookie, Eberle & Hall not really falling into the Sophomore jinx trap, Gilbert having a potential career year, Potter turning out as a diamond in the rough, etc.

I stand by my assertion however that the next big step this team NEEDS to take to continue the successful rebuild is to get at least 1 but hopefully 2 bonafide bluechip defencemen & a true, young #1 goalie or else it is all for not. Would be nice to get some more talented depth players too of course so we could actually survive the inevitable injuries to our top players without going on 4 -6 game losing streaks!

Like Racki & most others here I’m sure, I was never expcecting the Oilers to finish in the top 16 but I was sure as hell expecting them to finish better than 28-30 which is where they could be headed again without some help.

  9. dawgtoy says:

Dean Lombardi apologizes for his actions in regards to the colin Fraser trade. That has to hurt a little eh? Eating crow is never fun.
The Oilers confirm that Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins would have been named All Stars if not for their injuries.

  10. Racki says:

Maybe he wants to trade for Hemsky..

Am I the only one who thinks they still should have been named? Then replacements could be named. Hasn’t that happened in the past? Seems to me they should still have that honour based on their play up until they were sidelined, especially when you compare them to the OTT players that got voted in.

No doubt about it! What a thrill to be named to your first all star game while tied for seventh in scoring, but oh your injured…forget it! Really? Bettman IMO has the class of an unflushed toilet.

Cammalleri, 5th rounder, and the rights to a European goalie prospect for Rene Bourque, 2nd rounder in 2013, and prospect Patrick Holland.

Well now I’m not so sure … they are basically the same age … I just really hate those fag flamers and so don’t want them to succeed that it clouds my better judgement.

  16. hemmerlady says:

seriously…? they dealt Cammy to the flamers? he’s not having a great year obviously, but how can I enjoy watching him play now that he’s sporting orange? rats. (I cheer for the Habs when we don’t make the playoffs…probably not this year tho)

  17. gr8one says:

dawgtoy: Well now I’m not so sure … they are basically the same age … I just really hate those fag flamers and so don’t want them to succeed that it clouds my better judgement.

Yeah, Bourque’s actually a year older…I was surprised to hear that as well.

  18. oilinblood says:

im not gonna say much but how do you guys feel about LSchenn and Kadri?

I dont mind Luke but i despise Kadri. Kadri does have experience with Hall though.

BTW. ahem. both i hear are already confirmed healthy scratches well before practice. Unusual one would say.

  19. Racki says:

I like Schenn. Kadri I never liked, and I would even say “despise” like yourself. I’ve hated him since junior.. even when he was playing for Team Canada. Not a fan of players with the type of attitude he has. So under no circumstances would I want him here.

I’m not sure what it would take to land Luke Schenn, but I’d be happy adding him to the Oilers if the Leafs would part with him. Not for our first though.

i have been fond of luke but i think toronto has been a bad place for him. they dont exactly have the best 2 way forwards and he isnt the biggest guy. personally i dont think he is built to be a shutdown guy. never did believe he fit that mould against men. While in toronto he has also been scratched alot and been unfairly punished for learning and not lack of effort. i wonder if its a lost case now.
as for kadri… man i put him in the same pile of dog sh** as i still put ribeiro in (and always had well before his diving and swimming escapades in the nhl). BUT i do admit that if a trade seemed uneven i might ask hall and eberle about him. Sometimes kids need to mature or sometimes its a change of environment. Hmmm thats a doozy though. i dont even think he is all that talented.

Then again Laffs fans seem to think they can get parise or getzlaf for that package…. so i guess Hemsky, gagner and our 2nd round for their playoff stretch drive wont be good enough. oh and gretzky will come back out of retirement to play for the leafs…and doug gilmour and ray whitney back on the fourth line. mhm.

in unrelated news…clowe is not playing for the sharks tonight. dadum.

  21. zackman35 says:

Leafs proposals are always good for a laugh. At least 9/10, shame really how much time I waste reading a lot of those proposals but entertaining none the less.

Other day I was reading HFboards and saw a thread for Stamkos with leaf fans offering Kessel + Lupul + 1st, closest thing I’ve seen to actual value in a long time and for Leaf fans to give up this woah… until I saw someone post something like “no take out Kessel and put in Schenn/Kadri” or something to that extent, then I realized I was back in Leafland.

I usually see a lot of 2nd Tier players/Bubbling Prospect/Picks and usually one Cap Dump for a Malkin/Lucic/Backstrom type of player.

  22. Racki says:

 At the same time, if we had a player in the Art Ross race, we’d probably do the same thing here. :P And actually really, both Lupul and Kessel are in there, although it should be recognizeable that this is just a one off for them so far.

I have always thought Kessel would be a good player one day, at least back in his Junior days. Then I saw him in a Leafs uni, and I thought that dream (for him) was over! Who knew it was just starting? :P

Anyways, silly proposal indeed, since I’m sure Stamkos is an untouchable there.

  23. oilinblood says:

i always felt kessel would be a franchise player with a shot at being a phenom but not a generational. On an oilers level i would say that RNH has looked nothing less than a phenom to me with hall and ebs as franchise players. I dont even take into account that RNH is still growing vertically and who knows what he will be like when he fills out. If someone has a “phenom” on their team it is very unlikely that they will get traded.
The big picture to me is that RNH is 18 and iwould guess is exactly showing the properties that all the hemsky fans were screaming hemsky had the ability to do -minus the strong defensive game and back check ferocity of the new franchise face – but never could do due to the extreme lack of quality linemates in edmonton. RNH doesnt need to be catered to… he makes horc look good, makes smyth look good, makes eberle into a 40 goal threat, and eases pressure on our below par d.

Im gladly eating crow about this kid, he has blown my freakin mind.
I dont feel sooo bad because Larsson is kicking ass (i think is definently better than hedstrom) and i still think Huberdeau has been as i expected him to be. but jesus is rnh good.

  24. Racki says:

Per @Real_ESPNLeBrun, Elliott gets $1.7M next year and $1.9M in 13-14 season.

    Good deal for Blues

  25. Racki says:

1:15 into the Canadiens / Capitals game, and Bourque drops the gloves with Hendricks. I’d say Bourque won the fight too. I wonder if that will be enough to answer for his elbow on Nicklas Backstrom, or if the Capitals will like another round where they get to do some better damage.

  26. Racki says:

Steve-O was mentioning to me at lunch about Ben Bishop from St. Louis likely being available for cheap because the Twitter talk (courtesy of Bob McKenzie) is he’s about to become a Group 6 UFA (meaning that unless he plays 17 more games at the NHL level, he’ll become a UFA July 1st).

Bishop is doing really well in Peoria (AHL). He has 27 games played (starter there, looks like), 17-10-0 record, 2.17 GAA and a 0.932 Sv%. Of course it’s just the AHL, but looks like he’s had some decent numbers throughout his career.. some good highs and some lows in there too, unfortunately. Maybe worth a 4th rounder or something.

Then we trade away Khabibulin somewhere (not to St. Louis.. another trade) and play the crap out of Bishop at the NHL level. If he makes an impact here, fantastic. If he doesn’t.. well, we’ll be getting a good pick again this year (or have a good trade asset).

I don’t think we’re a better team this year with Bishop here though. I just think it would be nice to drop Khabi’s contract for next year so we can find someone else (even though he’s played great for us for this year.. I’m just being realistic here).

  27. hemmerlady says:

did anyone see that Sid has been diagnosed with a broken neck?

  28. Racki says:

I dont think he had a broken neck. I know they were saying he was supposed to be getting an MRI.. not sure if he had it yet. That article you linked said the injury was healed up too. Not sure though if he had fractured vertebrae originally, or what. Afaik, details are still unknown and he’ll be getting further diagnosed.

  29. hemmerlady says:

sorry didn’t link the right article. I saw on the news that his neck vertebrae were indeed fractured.

  30. gr8one says:

I have also heard reports that he had vertebrae that were cracked.

  31. Racki says:

Oddly, TSN doesn’t have anything on it other than something similar to the article above, that he had suffered a neck injury but has healed up and is getting further diagnosis. Any links to something that says he fractured vertebrae? I had initially seen that on TV a couple/few days ago… but I wasn’t listening closely enough and thought they said he had fractured a couple vertebrae too, but then I heard afterwards that it was healed up. So it’s a little confusing.. is he healed or are they fractured? Either way, I hope the guy is healed up soon. I’m not one to cheer on player injuries (unless it’s Pronger…. just kidding :P)

  32. dawgtoy says:

  33. chucker says:

Wow! I wonder how he feels about the “Team Doctors” now. That sucks. Hockey is not the same without him. Even Ovie needs him it seems.

  34. Racki says:

So the doctors have now said that there is and was no fracture in Crosby’s neck, but rather soft tissue damage.

  35. hemmerlady says:

seems like something you shouldn’t mix up… yikes. Maybe they’ll change their minds again. I’d be “upset” whether or not I went on the record about it. Sid’s probably taking the high road. I really hope he gets a swift and accurate diagnosis and can return to the game a.s.a.p.

  36. G&S says:

Wouldn’t it be great if we could get in on the Rick Nash sweepstakes. What I mean is a 3 team trade. We give the Bluejackets our 1st round pick +___________ they give another team Nash and we pluck a top tier defender from the team that lands Nash. Just wishful thinking on my part but I think it would be a better option then using our pick to select a dman who will take many years of developing to be a useful part of our team. The jackets would then most likely be picking 1-2 in the upcoming draft. Not a bad way to start a rebuild IMO.

  37. Racki says:

I would definitely be cool with that. I wonder what teams we could get a d-man from. I do know Jack Johnson is available (apparently), although I wouldn’t give up our 1st for that. 3-way deals always are tough to do… but it would be cool if we could acquire a big name d-man somehow.

  38. chucker says:

Hall Gill just traded to Nashville for Geoffrion and Slaney and possibly a pick. I guess this means the Suter talks are not going well and he could be traded soon?

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=388101 I have to think this is a huge win for Montreal given where they are and the obvious need to re-build and add to their young guns. Is a Gomez buyout in the making this summer?

  39. Racki says:

I actually think it means they’re trying to stock up for a playoff push. I’d love to think it means they’re trading him… to us! But I think they’re going to give a good run and just proving to their D stars they’re committed. They’ll need some forwards help too though.

  40. oilinblood says:

maybe i am biased because i followed his brother anthony for a long time; but what the hell is going on with chris stewart? As long as its not drugs or something unprofessional… i would be interested in taking a chance on him as our hemsky replacement for a #2rw who can also play his off wing.

chris seems like he has a case of the penner.

opinions?info? wtf is going on with this guy?

my opinion of him is he is effective in games where its tighter coverage and less flow. it would be nice to have that ingredient in our top 6. i think we have a good top 6 for games with flow against teams that want to actually load the gun and open it up against us… but we need some different looks who also have that top 6 talent. The fact he can play either wing is big, and something we gave up though rarely used when we had penner.

btw he is a pending rfa i believe.

  43. dawgtoy says:

Bullshit that we will not see the first half hour of the game tonight. Joining the Oilers in progress after the Toronto-Chicago game that starts at 6. Even though the Oiler game was moved back to 8, we’ll miss most of the first period. I H8 TSN and their fuckin Hard-on for the Maple(Fire Wilson)Leafs.

  44. dawgtoy says:

Actually it appears that TSN is blacking out the first period of the Oiler game that is being broadcast on Sportsnet…as TSN has exclusive broadcasting rights. Still a fuckin’ complete joke IMO. The world revolves around the Toronto Maple Leafs!!!

    http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/02/28/blackout-looming-for-start-of-oilers-blues-game-wednesday/

  45. Racki says:

    Bush. Fuck you TSN.

  46. zackman35 says:

You know, it occurred to me this morning that the d-man we are looking for, or how I see it anyways, fits the mold of studly wonderbomb Sheldon Souray almost perfectly circa 2008/09 season.

If only he was putting up those numbers, was ten years younger and didn’t have that debacle of a relationship with the Oilers organization (anything else?).

Is this what we see in Shea Weber?

Shea Weber doesn’t seem to have as much as a mean streak or so it sounds but he can still throw some mean lunch boxes.

  47. Racki says:

  48. NorwegianOiler says:

Which highly touted youngster has struggled most in the NHL this season? Pääjärvi? How about Niederreiter’s lone goal in 40 games?

Theoretically, with no other consideration than player talent, would you do a straight up swap?

  49. Racki says:

I always prefer to go with the devil I know… but there was a time where I was all drooly for Nintendo-rider. Still am, in a way. I think he’ll pull out of this, like Magnus will. But it definitely is concerning to see both those guys struggling so badly.

  50. chucker says:

I am with Racki. I keep Magnus just because we know him more. Both are likely cases of kids being rushed on poor teams. I am glad he was sent down to experience some winning and playoffs. Hopefully that Swede line solves some problems for us.
