This page can be used to discuss anything you like, whether it’s hockey, or anything else (short of viagra, and other exciting spam topics). Just use the comments down below to post what you like. Try not to get too out of hand. Obviously keep it clean still, and keep it legal. Other than that, feel free to talk about whatever you like here.

I wrote the Edmonton Sun, using Trogdor’s work e-mail, and told them that their new website looks like a tabloid. Their response was that this was what they were going for…… *stunned deer look*

Anyways, I heard this info from elsewhere too, although I didn’t catch the part about the prescription fraud… just that it involved “drug possession” or something. Oi… obviously it wasn’t Aaron’s intent to harm his brother, and I would imagine it was with good intentions that he faked the prescription. But… Oxycodone… there’s a reason it’s a controlled drug. I assume that was the prescription he faked…

oilinblood: it was the worst series i have ever been witness to. i couldnt watch a full game without falling asleep. the worst final ever played and it lasted 7 fn games. i was almost ready to give up hockey. ever since then the ducks are one of my 2 hated teams. i Never watch a ducks game. horrible hockey.

Could care less about the series, Giguere won the Conn Smythe by playing for the losing team, by standing on his head and willing a team that had no business bing there. That was goaltender brilliance the likes of which are rarely seen. You almost gave up watching hockey based on that final … that in itself speaks volumes.

  3. Racki says:

No slag against OIB, I’m sure that was hyperbole, but kind of a related thought here…

I’ve heard some of my friends mention something like that before .. “I’ll quit watching hockey if….” or “I’ll quit watching the Oilers if…”

God… I fuckin’ love this game, and no matter how much Bettman or someone else fucks it up, I’ll always watch.

Again though, not directed against OIB (and I reiterate that I think it was hyperbole anyways)… that comment just made me think of that pet peeve of mine (the other people meant it when they said it!). You’re not much of a fanatic if you’d quit watching the game that easily. :P Although I admittedly took a year off cheering for the Oilers the year following the Gretzky trade. That was my half-assed attempt to send a message to Pocklington that I thought he was an asshole, however. :P

  4. Racki says:

Alexei Yashin may return to the Islanders after all, says TSN.

Wow. That’s a bit of a surprise. It’s been 4 years of KHL hockey for this guy since he was bought out by the Islanders. At least he’s been playing pro hockey, but you have to wonder if he can still play at a high enough level. The Islanders do say he looks good though right now.

  5. LateNightOilFan says:

Pretty weird, alot of Isles fans are upset at the thought of this. The cap hit and buyout price is the same for the next 4 years (his previous contract would have been up last season) so they’re looking at the existing $2.2m buyout + whatever it would be for a new contract. The best fan post so far on the Isles thread I saw was “If we pay a guy to play while paying him not to play we deserve to fold.”

  6. Racki says:

Excellent quote . haha wow, that’ll be a kick in the nuts

  7. chucker says:

Dibs on Yashin for the pool! Go Isles. :/

  8. dawgtoy says:

They are still paying him until 2

    chucker:
Dibs on Yashin for the pool! Go Isles. :/

They are still paying him 2.24 until 2014, if they sign him, it better be for one dollar.

  9. chucker says:

It would at least have to be for league minimum. How strange is that situation?

  10. Racki says:

Yah, what chucker said. That would be a bit of a kick in the nuts to Islanders fans. I love that quote from LNOF..

  11. chucker says:

Boogard’s brother charged in his death. As per TSN.

According to the above story, it sounds like Aaron Boogard was trying to control the amount of drugs available to his brother. Very sad. Anyone watch Intervention? Sounds like this family has been through the ringer and back.

On the topic of terrible addictions, Amy Winehouse has been found dead at a London apartment. As per front page of the Edmonton Journal online.

  13. Grass&sOIL says:

Nikolai Khabibulin withdraws appeal and is heading to jail.

    http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=372511

Gregor tweeted that the early reports are that he will spend 15 days in jail and will serve the other 15 at home with a monitoring bracelet.

I am just happy that coming into next season this will all be finally behind him. If there is any chance of him having a bounce back season he had to put these demons to rest and pay the price for his actions. Now he can move forward.

  14. chucker says:

Can’t wait for the shots of Khabbi in stripes and pink ginch. :^|

  15. Racki says:

Wow. Well, I wish the guy the best. I don’t really respect drunk drivers, but I still hope for a good outcome from this. As far as him having a bounce back year, I doubt it.

  16. chucker says:

I hope he bounces back to the KHL.

  17. Grass&sOIL says:

I think NK can bounce back if he is willing to accept a smaller role with Dubnyk as the starter(or as the DD of the net :) ) getting in up to 60 games.

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

So Khabi’s house arrest allows him to leave the house for 12 hours a day, nice.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/oilers/2011-07-26-nikolai-khabibulin-to-serve-dui-sentence_n.htm

Per his lawyer: “…he can’t wait to get to training camp and start with the business of hockey and being the starting goalie for Edmonton.”

  19. Racki says:

When does he start serving his sentence? He could be done the sentence completely before camp starts. ~I look forward to him being the starting goalie for Edmonton.~

  20. LateNightOilFan says:

Racki: When does he start serving his sentence? He could be done the sentence completely before camp starts. ~I look forward to him being the starting goalie for Edmonton.~

According to that article, he’ll start serving his time within the next few days. I suspect he’ll be done by the end of August.

  21. chucker says:

I don’t think I leave my house for twelve hours a day almost ever. What a joke.

  22. Racki says:

Federal, pound-me-in-the-ass prison it is not.

  23. Ktown says:

Attention Edmonton POTFrs… LOL – News Break.

I’ll be in Edmonton next week, and I thought it might be nice to put faces to names on here. If anybody’s interested in meeting up for a beer at Hudsons or something like that, let me know.

I’m thinking probably any day from Monday to Wednesday. Let me know – First pitcher’s on Ktown!

PS – if you prefer to keep your Internet granted anonymity, no worries. I won’t take offence. After all, I’m really just a 450lb, 53 year old woman with a lot of cats, masquerading as a 36 year old, once athletic guy that loves hockey.

  24. chucker says:

    http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Edmonton/2011/07/30/18490686.html

And so it begins. Hope he comes into camp using this as motivation.

  25. Racki says:

FYI, I’ve almost got a forum up and running. I’d say I’ll set it loose in a few days or so. It will beat using the General Discussion all the time ;) Although I hope you guys still frequent the blog, as this is where the meat and potatoes posts will go.

Looks great Racki. Will get to work as soon as my account if verified!

  27. LateNightOilFan says:

Sean Avery gets himself arrested this morning. Anyone got $20k to bail him out? :)

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=373247

  28. NorwegianOiler says:

It’s been a while since Avery’s messed up. I guess Tortorella wasn’t there to babysit…

  29. Racki says:

Typical Avery. At least he didn’t wave a stick in the cops face. *cue chucker to take that comment another way*

  30. chucker says:

    Yeah. What a douche.

  31. hemmerlady says:

hey heyyyyyyy. HL reporting after a 2-week vacation in Portland, O-R, where the weather was gorgeous and bore little resemblance to the “shittiest Vancouver summer ever” (it’s been nice since I got back).

1- Wonder why the cops were paying a visit to Wavery in the first place? Doubt there’s a statute in NY outlawing douchery.

2- HL googled “keeper pool” but is unable to determine on her own whether it will be too labour-intensive for her limited spare time. (Also I am not a cap-space or waiver expert and doubt I will become so?)

3- Was hoping that Khabi being in jail meant he wouldn’t be playing goal for us for at least a short time…alas. Nice they could make the sentence work with his busy schedule. (/facetious)

  32. Racki says:

Keeper pool just implies that it doesn’t completely end when the season ends. Well, there is a winner every year, but the catch is that at the end of the year you keep X number of players on your roster. Each team is made up of unique players (i.e. there can be only one Ovi… if I have him, you can’t have him).

The keeper league that N.O. set up has each team keep it’s entire roster at the end of each year. So you’ve got to be pretty savvy with the trades and waivers or you could screw yourself for years.

This one might be a little difficult because it requires a monthly upkeep in which you calculate your teams points, and then determine any roster moves. N.O. promises us that it won’t be too bad though. I would have to guess that it isn’t for the casual players though.

BTW, join up on the forum whether you’re playing or not! http://forum.puttingonthefoil.com

  33. hemmerlady says:

Thanks for the summary. Sounds like it might be a bit complicated for me but you never know until you try it.
I may investigate the possibility of a low-maintenance pool and invite potfers.

I registered for the forum but my privileges are limited. [strongbad has revoked my Crisper Drawer Priv-a-legges!]

  34. Racki says:

I’ll probably start up another pool later for the serious, but less serious, players. Just a straight Yahoo pool.. nothing fancy.

Your user has been fixed up so that you aren’t muted anymore.

  35. gr8one says:

I will be more than happy to do another Yahoo league again this year, actually should say hopeful that there is still interest in one, I thought it was awesome last year.

  36. Racki says:

For sure there will be interest in a standard pool too. Always fun

the following may be read with a tone of indifference.
im not too concerned of your opinion on the topic of me being a fan. i dont watch hockey to see soccer on skates. i watch my oilers because they have always been about speed, creativity and a pretty open flow. if abandoning watching half the league in the pre-lockout nhl when jsg wore mac truck tire sized shoulder pads and a blocker the size of a door…is cause to say im no fan of hockey than i am no fan. if thats hockey … ill find something else. if the oilers ever bored me like that i would also find something else. i’m no slave to the brand or anyones opinion. if i dont like it i will drop it like my body does with all needless waste. (i take great joy in the fact we lit jsg up like a wild fire and he threw a tantrum at smytty and got two penalties in a row. great game. if im not mistaken, his juvenile cry fest got him kicked out of the game. ah, memories. bahahaha i got to try to youtube that. i remember laughing for a good 10 minutes at the time. laughed so much my belly hurt for hours after. too many beers and nights of studying… abs werent ready for that work out.)
i also will state that i went home many nights early because i refused to support a team that needed 40 minutes to realize they had to play. winning or losing is of no issue to me when i cheer but they got to show up and they need to play hockey the way i want to see it. if i want to watch coaching and chess ill go watch coaching videos and chess. an educated eye can tell when guys just arent putting in their effort and got paid to not show up for 2 period, just like an educated eye knows when a coach is killing the game to win. its understandable if you got beat or outsmarted or outskilled… but some things are inexcusable. luckily for me the oilers have been all effort for the last year and im not too concerned if we get blown out as long as the gas tanks are empty at nights end.
its just like i dont hate on the flames. they went to the finals in 2004, great. even though i had no hate on for them i cheered for the lightning to win in 04 because tampa played offensive hockey in the shut down snooze league.
am i a fan of the oilers or oiler hockey that i grew up on? oiler hockey that i grew up on. ill follow teams i feel are going balls out. everyone else should wear cleats
also you can be a low scoring team and be exciting. you can be beaten every night and have me thinking every game was awesome. dont bore me. i have a family and many other things i can do. if i want to be put to sleep, my humidifier makes nice white noise for just that purpose.

you know the scene in tin cup when costner keeps tsaking shot after shot on the one hole instead of taking the penalty stroke? thats the way i feel about everything. you do things your way. if you get beat you get beat. id rather win my way than risk losing not being me. coaches set systems and are a part of every facet in the game but if they dont go for it… than i dont really want part of it. my opinion on it cant be broken by temptations of success. good defense is not bad hockey but intentionally not going for it, is.

he said hes packed on 10 lbs since april. good to hear. he needs it in his trunk. i dont mind if he stays slim up top. i know iginla said he had real tough time one year because he had spent all summer building a stronger chest and then spent the whole season trying to get rid of those gains as it had affected his range of motion. if he is going to make camp the trunk needs to be priority. if he gains another 5 of muscle mass and then gets off the juice ahem, i think he can make the team. i kid about the juice. i know i gained over 15 lbs clean in 5 months …. but that was actually due to muscle memory i think since i had been at that build when i was younger. in my case i had to drop fat and gain muscle. kids doing a much harder gain, in my opinion. muscle from nothing. being paid to do it and having the worlds best trainers doesnt hurt.

most of all it shows the kids work ethic and determination. you cant put on those gains and be slacking. good to see.

  40. Racki says:

Lowetide raving about RNH today. I like the notion that he is likely a more complete player than we expected. Of course, we can’t get too excited about one game though. But it’s nice to hear/see, anyways.

  41. NorwegianOiler says:

The Nuge clearly did well. Still just against kids, though.

  42. Bostonoiler says:

Oilers twitter says Oilers news coming in the am. Probably minor, but just a heads up.

  43. Racki says:

Probably announcing the new Enoch Arena Proposal… kidding. :P

  44. hemmerlady says:

Watching Youngblood on tv right now!

  45. Racki says:

    GO, BOMBERS!!!

  46. Steve-O says:

Looks like Avery didn’t actually touch a cop.

  47. Steve-O says:

Also, not sure how many people watch NCAA football, but how crazy is this?
