I’m assuming Racki, that you mean keep JDD, get rid of Re-Khabi, trade Dubnyk and hopefully land someone like or Craig Anderson? And I think we may see one of our goalies used as bait come draft day (most likely Dubnyk unless he goes on some crazy streak).
And I keep forgetting that and no one will be eligible to play in Springfield next year anyways.
I think they should stick it out in the CHL then play in the AHL and work them up. I could see most organizations jump-starting Hall/Seguin though. And I forgot to mention before but I think that MPS is playing another season in the SEL.
By Racki, March 8, 2010 @ 11:56 pm Racki(Quote)
I’ll be honest.. I don’t have faith in either goalie. JDD looks good at the moment, but there’s still no reason to believe he;’s worth keeping. Although Doobie has had some real stinkers this year though, granted.. so there seems to be little justification to keep him over Deslauriers. Although some of the games I’d say look worse on him than they were. But given how many games the two have received, I’d say the Oilers are already going to go with JDD (which works for me).
But anyways, the realist in me says Re-Khabi is going nowhere.
By zackman35, March 9, 2010 @ 12:04 am zackman35(Quote)
I’m no goalie expert but even if we did send Doobie back down and he wasn’t claimed, I remember Tambo going on how his days in the AHL were numbered and that this is his chance to show what he has in the big leagues. I don’t think he’s got a fair chance, like you mentioned it seems as though that the organization has already chose JDD but there’s something about Dubnyk I think we have yet to see. You’d think that being one of the top goalies in the AHL, or I think that’s the case, would transpire into the NHL. The one thing I do know about goalies though is that the development process is much longer. Hate to play the “what-if” game but I wonder where we’d be at if Dubnyk had an equal number of games behind his belt as JDD. It’s tough to say, after JDD streak through, they should throw Doobie in there a few times and experiment a little more with what we got, since we have nothing to lose.
And there is no question about it, once Khabi regains his health he will be between the pipes come the starting of the season.

NHL will not suspend forward Matt Cooke. Thats a joke. Colin Campbell give you head a shake. I really hope the Bruins wake up and hit Crosby in the head, and hard. I enjoy watching Savard and the Bruins, being my home town club, are my 2nd favorite team (Even though I don’t admit that to friends lol). It needs to be an eye for an eye here. If there is a suspension for someone hitting Crosby all hell will break loose.
By NorwegianOiler, March 10, 2010 @ 3:50 pm NorwegianOiler(Quote)
As expected. Had they suspended him, it should have included a retroactive clause that would have suspended Mike Richards for the exact same amount of games – as their hits on Savard and Booth respectively were pretty much identical.
By Racki, March 10, 2010 @ 4:09 pm Racki(Quote)
Both were deserving of suspensions.. but oh well. On Sportsnet one of the Analysts mentioned predicting that saying that we likely won’t see suspensions for that until next year.
So again…. Boston and Pittsburgh play on the 18th.. circle it on your calendars. Of course the retribution will likely be suspendedable, however.
By Bostonoiler, March 10, 2010 @ 7:19 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
OH WELL??? Racki Marc Savard might NEVER play again they have been saying. I don’t get Campbell’s reasoning here. 2 mistakes don’t make a right. He should have been suspended. Players around the league are saying he should be suspended. This is why the NHL gets laughed at by people. I’m very fired up on this topic :p
By Bostonoiler, March 10, 2010 @ 7:20 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
I think they should go after Crosby. An eye for an eye am I right? If there is a Bruin suspended I will watch KHL hocke.y That would be the NHL giving Crosby the biggest BJ.
By Racki, March 10, 2010 @ 9:22 pm Racki(Quote)
Settle down
I didn’t say the guy shouldn’t be suspended.. I said he should be. I can’t do anything from the seat of my recliner, thus the “oh well”. Again, I said both Richards and Cooke should have been suspended. Elsewhere I commented in another thread about how bad the hit was and how I am tired of players not standing up for teammates (f— the instigator/suspension). You’re preaching to the converted here.
However, for me, “eye for an eye” means going after Cooke. I’m not one for intentionally attacking players that had no involvement unless its done cleanly (and I’m not talking clean as in unpenalized headshot).
By LateNightOilFan, March 10, 2010 @ 10:12 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Yup BO, the Bruins should just start methodically head hunting every star of the game. Why limit themselves to just Crosby? Why not take out Ovechkin too, that will really prove a point and will eliminate any controversy over the Rocket Richard trophy. Someone like Stamkos or even a Calder candidate rookie like Myers would be good, may as well make sure these up and coming players know you mean business. May as well take out a Vezina candidate like Miller too. Yup, targetting uninvolved high-profile players out of spite will really improve things in this league.
C’mon now. It sucks but don’t drag other players into it. Hopefully Savard will be ok.
By mrgod2u, March 11, 2010 @ 8:09 am mrgod2u(Quote)
The league specifically added this rule so that they can punish these plays in the future with no question about the validity of the call. The way the rules were set up before the Matt Cooke hit was “clean”. The league can’t punish players for breaking rules that don’t exist. The fact that it took events like this to finally get this rule made is the ridiculous thing. This has been an issue for years, and expecting the players to police themselves is silly. Realistically this was the only way for a no-talent like Cooke to aid his team, so he does it. I doubt his coach said anything bad to him about it.
Now that the league has specifically outlawed them it will target them in game and out. The first person caught in one of these will get a big suspension just to make a point, and the ref’s will be instructed to call them all.
Keep in mind that a lot of these hits that we are shaking our fingers at here are the same ones we used to cheer for when it was Torres laying them on our opponents.
By Oilersman, March 11, 2010 @ 8:19 am Oilersman(Quote)
Sad to say this is a definite soft point of the NHL, and the fact not much has been said/done about the head shot topic is even worse. If players really want to protect themselves they should get together as a group (NHLPA) and actually do something. Go on strike demanding changes? That’s what normal unions do when shit hits the fan… I dunno, somethings got to give. Perhaps if the players strike and viewer ratings go down Bettman will be forced to step in and do something since he’s losing “money”…. what a joke… take out the instigator rule so goons can get what they deserved, like when I grew up playing AA/AAA… speculate anyone?
By mrgod2u, March 11, 2010 @ 9:02 am mrgod2u(Quote)
Actually the NHLPA would come out on the other side of the head-shot rule. They represent the players doing the hits as well as the ones taking them. They are often the ones squawking the loudest when players are suspended on a grey area of a rule.
The instigator rule is bogus for sure. My problem with it is that it sends the message “Leave the punishments to us…” But then the officials miss ton’s of crap on the ice. Most time they only see the retaliation, not the act that provoked it.
I think that there should also be a challenge rule (where an unsuccessful challenge blows a timeout), a ref in the sky (watching live feed only, and limited to blowing a play dead within a certain number of seconds), and chips in the puck to tell if they are in the net.
We have technology to make the game better, but for some reason we rely on human-error prone systems.
By Oilersman, March 11, 2010 @ 9:16 am Oilersman(Quote)
Very very good points Mrgod2u! When will we start using our technology to our advantage? As for goal judges, we got rid of them, as for refs missing calls a challenge rule would work great. If the coach wants to challenge they should video replay and be able to make calls based on what happened there, but put limits on the challenges as well. If a team makes a challenge and a ref doesn’t agree with it simply penalize that bench, and perhaps only allow 1-2 challenges so it keeps the game fair but at the same time keeps the players level headed… It could work?
I’m also glad you agree on the instigator situation… players should be able to take liberty to such situations, and then if they feel their player stepped up and did the right thing due to a “boneheaded” play, they can simply challenge and if the refs miss something on video replay like Cooke’s hit well… they shouldn’t be reffing period… but hey this all would work… simple ideas like this need to be adopted.
Remember folks, as much as we all bleed copper and blue, there has to be a limit when it comes to health… these guys have family’s just like we do! I for one take shame after watching one of our players run someone from behind/head shot or what not…
By Racki, March 11, 2010 @ 12:27 pm Racki(Quote)
Sadly, the league also punishes players/teams that police themselves.. more so than the original “crime” itself. So it’s a lose-lose situation until a real punishment for head shots is in place.
By Trogdor, March 11, 2010 @ 2:55 pm Trogdor(Quote)
I thought about doing up a post on head shots, but looks like all the discussion is already occuring in here.
Even if the rules state that Cooke did nothing wrong, I wonder if he may have got something if the Richard’s hit never took place. Hard to say.
As for the talk of challenges, I say screw that. Hockey is a fast paced back and forth game. Who doesn’t get annoyed already when a goal goes to review and the flow of the game gets destroyed? Adding challenges for other points in the game would be too much.
By mrgod2u, March 11, 2010 @ 3:31 pm mrgod2u(Quote)
I understand what you mean about the pace, and the “review time-out” can totally kill momentum for a team too. Maybe eye in the sky ref’s could remove the necessity for all the current reviews. Or take out the automatic review and allow a limited number of challenges per bench. For that matter just getting rid of the “no kicking the puck in to the net rule” would get rid of half the reviews. Depends on what you want to see on the ice.
I certainly admit to disliking the current review process. Whether anything can (or should) be done to amend it is debatable, sometimes though it would mean the difference between a win or a loss, or even a playoff exit. With the stakes at play I think adding better controls than all-too-human ref’s can only make the game more fair.
By gr8one, March 11, 2010 @ 4:23 pm gr8one(Quote)
Here’s a pretty good article on headshots, if only for the fact that it’s at least ~kind of~ a different perspective on all of the same old regurgitated reports on the subject.

I still cannot believe Cooke was not suspended.

TSN Comment: “I guess I am showing my age, but I recall that back when only Stan Miketa wore a helmet, there was no such thing as head shots. Players had respect for each other, and if they had a score to settle, they dropped the gloves and went at it. No cheap blind sided hits that put anyone out of the game.”
What happened to that? Instigator rule?

Just a note, Eberle potted his 49th goal and has 105 pts (49g-56a) on the season as of last night. Their team got absolutely destroyed by the Wheat Kings at their last home game of the year (9-3…ouch) but Eberle has 1 game left tonight, will he break 50? Let’s go Pats!!!!!
By LateNightOilFan, March 13, 2010 @ 9:25 am LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Oiler alumni related – Dougie Weight is done for the season. His shoulder has been bad all year but he was playing through it in the hopes of a playoff race. (Edit – torn rotator cuff and labral tear in his left shoulder). Since the team is pretty much out of the race now, and there were no takers for him at the deadline, they’re shutting him down and he’s scheduled for surgery. He’s UFA at season’s end, I’m thinking this may be it for him and wouldn’t be surprised to hear a retirement announcement in the summer.
By Racki, March 13, 2010 @ 9:40 am Racki(Quote)
Yah I heard that! I hope he can hit the milestone.
Yah I think you’re right about the retirement… the end of a pretty strong career.

Thank you Mark Recci! In an interview today from montreal Mark talked about the hit on Savard. He said the thing everyone has been thinking. If it was on Crosby there would be a suspnsion. its a double standard. Hopefully the league wakes up.

Well, I believe I can actually not worry if we win any games at this point. I feel like we’ve crossed a major hurdle.

9 points to gain in 14 games… I’d say 30th is pretty safely ours.

Jordan Eberle is a 50 goal scorer, btw.. he got the lone goal tonight.
By Bostonoiler, March 13, 2010 @ 10:38 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
One thing that gets me mad is the ‘experts’ like Mike Milbury (Who i can’t stand, from personal experience i know hes a dick if you will) keep saynig the oilers have no hope for anything anytime soon when they have Eberle, Svensson, Hemsky, Penner, Hall/Seguin, Omark, Brule, Lander, Cogliano, Gagner, Whitney, Johnson, Smid, Petry, Peckham, Chorney, JDD and Khabi will take net. We got a good future ahead of us, and these ‘experts’ say there will be a long 6-10 years ahead. makes me laugh.
By Racki, March 13, 2010 @ 10:44 pm Racki(Quote)
I think the one area we are still lacking in is goal though. I hope we draft Pickard or Campbell or someone that is a decent prospect. Cause Deslauriers is inconsistent, Dubnyk is no better, and Khabibulin is an old sob with one foot in the proverbial NHL grave.
By Bostonoiler, March 13, 2010 @ 10:51 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
I can’t wait for the draft. I’m startnig to lean towards Seguin to be honest! I am looking forward to next season. I hope we are like the avs too! Also Kevin Lowe said has been saying MPS, Eberle and Hall/Seguin will be here next year. NESN said tongiht during the B’s game that they think the Oilers win a cup within the next 6 years.
By Bostonoiler, March 13, 2010 @ 10:53 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
I don’t like Campbell, but think Pickard in the 2nd round with probably the preds pick would be a really nice pickup. I like him and think he and Roy will make a nice duo here one day. I think khabi will rebound fine but thats just me.
By gr8one, March 14, 2010 @ 2:50 pm gr8one(Quote)
I think Khabi will have a good season next year as well too.
I also think the Oilers are going to be severely under rated next year as well.
I think Gagner and Brule are going to have big breakout years, I think Hemsky will be back and better than ever, I think Penner will hit new highs with a better supporting cast. I think our #1 pick will end up having a very good but unspectacular first season. Say like a Duchene, or Kane had, but not a Ovie or Crosby like rookie season. I think Eberle will contend for the Calder trophy next year.
I think our D is going to be much improved defensively and I think management will bring in another steadying defensive minded shut down guy via free agency with our new found cap room.I think Whitney will lead our D corps in points next season and start to be mentioned in the same breath with other Elite young D, and make us all say Visnovsky who?
I also think Horcoff will have a fantastic season in his proper role as a 3 line center, although he still won’t be worth his cap hit, he will still be a very good player that will be invaluable for us next season.
I think Souray and Cogs will be swapped for a very good top 6 player along the lines of a Nathan Horton.
I think the Oilers will make the playoffs next year, and I also think that they will do it without having to scratch our way into the 8th seed, probably somewhere in the 4th-7th range.
By Racki, March 14, 2010 @ 4:22 pm Racki(Quote)
Very optimistic, gr8one
But I’d love to see that all happen.
By gr8one, March 14, 2010 @ 6:18 pm gr8one(Quote)
Racki, lol…yeah…I gotta be optimistic, maybe unrealistically so, but it’s not THAT far fetched!
By mrgod2u, March 15, 2010 @ 11:16 am mrgod2u(Quote)
Personally I think we will either be terrible for another year, or be next year’s Colorado or Phoenix. There will be no pressure on the guys and with no playoffs to come back for I doubt we are rushing anyone off the IR.
If we can keep the team healthy, and pick up the free agents to fill in the gaps we have a shot at the playoffs next year. It certainly won’t hurt if we have a rookie on the team who comes out flying. Khabibulin could be a real wild card as well. With our Defense down-grading (as it stands now) we either need to score more goals or have a goalie stealing games. Khabbi can do that, and our forwards can too. I am actually fairly happy with our D as it stands once our injured players are back (Souray could be let go at the trade deadline with little effect). It is a good balance of toughness and offence/defence.
My dream draft day deal would be Souray to Boston for the TO pick. Not sure if they would go for it but oh my would that be sweet.
By MetalOil, March 15, 2010 @ 11:47 am MetalOil(Quote)
^^^ Ask yourself if you would trade our 1st round pick for a Souray type. Not a chance that happens. It would take a Hemsky + type deal to get that Boston/Tornonto pick.

So the NHL is meeting with OV about suspending hom for yesterday’s hit on Campbell. Campbell is done for the season, but it looks like he also loses an edge and its not entirly OV’s fault. People are calling for a 10 game suspenson for him. BS Cooke didn;t even meet with the league and wasn’t suspended. Of course the Penguin double standard applies for him!
By mrgod2u, March 15, 2010 @ 1:58 pm mrgod2u(Quote)
I think Ovie gets 5 games. It is consistent with other suspensions for this sort of play, and by the NHL’s own guidelines Ovie is a repeat offender. If they don’t throw the book at him then it makes them hypocrites. The Cooke hit had no clear rule (other than the match penalty one that Don Cherry pointed to) to be used as a basis. Boarding is very clear in definition and that is also clearly what he did.
Campbell may have lost an edge, but I don’t think he would have had he not been pushed especially at the speed they were going. If this were a first time offense… a slap might be warranted, but this isn’t.
By Racki, March 15, 2010 @ 2:04 pm Racki(Quote)
I like Ovi.. love how he plays on the edge.. but as a guy who played D, I hate hits from behind. Ovi gave him a good shove, and hits like that are pretty dangerous. I say give him 2 or more games. Campbell “lost an edge” because he got shoved by Ovi, in my opinion.

By LateNightOilFan, March 15, 2010 @ 3:23 pm LateNightOilFan(Quote)
Dangerous hit. They’ve all been dangerous hits and they’ve ended seasons and that sucks. Some of them the league has gotten right and some not. But I’m tired of people comparing hits and stating one should not be suspendable when the league has gotten a previous hit wrong. Richards should have been suspended, Cooke as well, but that doesn’t mean OV should not. OV needs to smarten up, that’s 3 game misconducts this season already I think, means an automatic 2 game suspension anyway so the league gave him the minimum so I’d say he got off easy. Edit – checked the rules – 3 game misconducts in a season = 1 additional game. So they gave him 2 – 1 right out of the rule book plus an additional one from the looks of it.
Downey should be suspended as well for his hit on Crosby yesterday. That was disgusting, especially if you see the front view and see the way his leg twisted and buckled – worse than Storts during that fight last season. I can’t believe Sid got up and played after that.
What’s it going to take for some of these players to smarten up? Injure a guy and you’re out for as long as he is?
By Bostonoiler, March 15, 2010 @ 4:32 pm Bostonoiler(Quote)
I love watching Crosby hurt, I truly can’t stand how he bitches and moans about everything. He asked for a dealy of game call whe nhats were thrown on the ice after ov scored a hat trick in the playoffs last season.

Not the biggest Crosby fan either, and if one chooses to have a hate-on, fair enough, but that guy is mad competitive. Whining or not, he plays without fear, drives inside whenever he sees an opening and is a gritty player.
I’d just leave it in the ‘personal preferences’ book, trying to rationalize it will likely just end up hurting your position in other arguments…
