The Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League will be featured as part of a 10-game Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) series called “AHL on CBC” during the 2010-11 season, the American Hockey League office announced today.
All 10 games in the AHL on CBC series will feature AHL teams affiliated with one of the six Canadian NHL teams. The Barons, the primary developmental affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, will be showcased October 24 when they travel to Ontario to play the Hamilton Bulldogs, top affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. (EDT). Other teams participating are the Abbotsford Heat (Calgary Flames), Manitoba Moose (Vancouver Canucks), Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Binghamton Senators (Ottawa Senators).
CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Saturday broadcasts will be followed by an AHL on CBC game on 10 Sunday afternoons, giving fans across Canada a chance to cheer on the NHL stars of tomorrow. Well, the Oilers have finally hired a GM for the Oklahoma City Barons. Feel free to shout a collective “who?”. Anyone that knows details on this guy, feel free to fill the rest of us in.
General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have appointed Bill Scott as General Manager of the Oklahoma City Barons.
Scott, who was recently the Director of Hockey Operations for the American Hockey League, will oversee the entire Barons’ hockey operations department.

The Oilers signed 29-year old center Alexandre Giroux to a one-way contract. No term/salary details are available at this point. However, the belief in the hockey world is that Giroux is a career AHLer.
Giroux was a big part of a winning culture in Hershey. He led the AHL in goals 2 years in a row (60 in 2008/09 and 50 in 2009/10). He also led the AHL in points in 2008/09 and was second in points in 2009/10 (behind teammate Keith Aucoin). All this with only 69 games played in each of the seasons. He was also a playoff performer, leading the league in goals and points in both years, and helping take Hershey to two consecutive Calder Cup wins.

Robert Daum was notified by the Edmonton Oilers organization last week that his contract as head coach of the then Falcons now Barons will not be renewed. Comments suggest that he was surprised by the decision and had no indications he would be lining up at the unemployment office.

Today, the Oklahoma City Barons hosted a live interview with Edmonton Oilers’ President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe and Oklahoma City Barons owner Bob Funk Jr in which fans could submit their questions.
