Saw a USC Trojans game while in the states, college football is awesome

Back from vacation, saw Racki get married off (he mentioned it in the comments somewhere, figure it’s safe for talking about), indulged in Vegas for a few days and then went to San Francisco for the weekend to catch a USC and 49er game. And you think Oiler fans are intense!

None the less, it appeared the Oilers had hit the bottom, and have recently attempted to make themselves respectable. Two straight wins, granted against shite quality teams, and looking at a very beatable team tomorrow. Something made me think they were not as bad as the first games have indicated, and we all know they are not as good as yesterday shows, so I’m guessing they’ll settle in around 20th place in the league by seasons end. Let’s make that my official prediction for the rest of the year.

Oiler News

Lots of Oiler news:
- Larianov bitched to the media about Yak’s icetime, which created a mini-firestorm where Yak was asked if he was happy about it and he said no. Honestly the less said about this non-item the better. I mean, come on. Dude wants to play, and it isn’t him asking for his way out.
- Smid was traded, and to the Flames no less. It seems Mac-T has put the team on notice that if things don’t get better quickly, he’ll trade all remaining defense away. I don’t like the trade, and the only way I think this becomes a win is if Brossoit becomes an actual #1 goalie which I’m not sold that he can be. But he was awesome on the Oil Kings.
- And apparently with the cap room freed up by that trade, Bryzgalov was signed to a deal to shore up the goaltending. Honestly, I didn’t think that Dubnyk would continue to shit the bed like he had been but at the price I don’t see this as an issue. If he returns to his Phoenix/Anaheim years I think he’ll help this team. Certainly a better quote.
- Mac-T had a state of the union address. I agree with pretty much all of what he said. In short (as I heard it), the team sucked but he won’t trade the good bits for a quick fix. While it sucks that the team is spending another year getting railed by real NHL teams, sending out talent in an attempt to save this year isn’t what is needed. Further, he mentioned that defense is what is needed, and while this isn’t a shock to anyone who pays attention to the team, it’s a positive to finally have Oiler management echo that sentiment.
- Arcobello has been told to apartment up. Good news for the little guy. Even though his waiver eligibility makes him the target of paper moves, he has definitely earned a spot on this team.
- All that said, the team is still in a terrible spot and I’d like to see a solid 2nd quarter of the season to show us that they are trending upwards and not just becoming the Islanders/Panthers/Thrashers of the west.

League News

- Buffalo cleaned house and turfed their GM, bringing in Pat Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalafontaine as their President of Hockey Operations (Kevin Lowe position) and Ted Nolan as their interm coach. Glad to see Nolan get another shot.
- Versteeg has been traded back to the Blackhawks, with Florida eating half of his contract (and cap hit) for the rest of his deal. I’d love it if Mac-T would start targeting cap/cash strapped teams and get players like this.
- Quick is hurt! Scrivens is playing lights out! I wonder who the Toronto goalie scout is cause seriously, with Rask, Scrivens and Reimer I’d like to see who he thinks is the next one. Or do they just draft a lot of goalies and hope for the best?
- Stamkos broke his leg. Now we can pretend we care about Tampa and what’ll happen to their season, but really, who will replace him on team Canada? I mean, that takes one hell of a triggerman away from Crosby.
- Chelios, Shanahan, Niedermayer, Shero (deceased) and Heaney were all inducted into the Hall of Fame. Still no Burns.
- East is still a joke compared to the West.
- I’m sure there’s more stuff but meh. Go Seahawks!

Anyways, on to the standings (and fight video, and Oil Kings):

Alright, the ship hasn’t been righted, but there is a blue spot in the sky amidst this storm of sorrow. It’s a very small spot, but it’s there. Coming off the heels of a victory, yes that’s right we won a game, the Oilers are playing host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Oilers last played Saturday night against the Flames and didn’t turn up the heat until late in the game for a come from behind victory. Hopefully it’s a turning point for the team’s waning confidence but it’s the Flames… A team many predicted to finish dead last this season.

The Blue Jackets are another winnable game, but it all depends on who shows up. Exciting as 3rd period comebacks are, it’s much easier to play with a lead. I’m sure the fans would love to see a home victory. It’s been a long time. Historically we have owned them though(29-10-8) so tonight could be that home win everyone is pining for.

Bryzgalov will be in the lineup tonight sporting #80. He’ll have to settle for a front row seat tough, Dubnyk will get the start. Coach Eakins has been happy with his play of late and will roll with him until Dubs convinces him otherwise. Another familiar face will be back on the ice tonight. Justin Schultz is returning from a groin injury and will be paired with Belov.

LaBarbera was waived to make room for Bryzgalov and has cleared. Not much change to the lines from Saturday aside from Larsen rotating out to make room for Justin Schultz.

So we didn’t get to see Klefbom last night, but we should tonight. Arcobello was “sent down” (on paper) to make room, but he’s been told by the coach to find himself a place to stay. In plain english, that means he’s made the team. This is good news. In reality, he should be ahead of Sam Gagner. He should be the 2nd line center… at least the way Gagner has been playing. I’m sure Gagner’s slowed down by the broken jaw. He isn’t going to go in the dirty areas like he needs to for him and this team to be successful. So, for now at least, Gagner needs to be moved down the lineup, and Arco up the lineup. But that won’t happen tonight.

Bryzgalov played for the Barons yesterday. Looks like he got shell-shocked in a 5-4 loss. According to Jonathan Willis, though, only one goal was possibly his fault. So that isn’t as bad as it sounds.

Sad moment.. this marks the first time the team will see Ladislav Smid in another uniform. I still hate this trade. Urgh.

The team needs a miracle tonight. They are playing an equally crappy team in Calgary. Calgary is all work, with little skill to show… the Oilers are all skill… with some heart from many players, but with a great lack in common sense and tactics. Something’s gotta give here. Both teams are struggling. 2-1 SO win for someone? The Oilers are slump-busters for most teams… but the Oilers also spanked the Flames 8-2 the last time these two teams met in Calgary. So who knows.

In other, non-hockey news, tonight is another George St-Pierre UFC fight. Not sure what time that starts, but I’m really interested in that too. I think Johny Hendricks will be a tough opponent for him. I will likely attempt to watch both tonight. Hopefully the Oilers don’t let me know…. GSP? He never lets me down.

None of us are as strong as all of us, chop wood, carry water…

New motivational slogan painted in the Oilers dressing room. I’m guessing the chop wood was from Lowe. He was good at that. And carry water… to distract the Sharks? They love that shit!

Tonight’s XBOX achievement is to score a goal. I don’t care if we lose 7-1, just score a goal. The drought has gone too long in our own barn. It should be the opposite. Not that we’re a dominant road team, but the road losses have been more competitive at least. Sharks did play last night while the Oilers rested, but there is no advantage in that with the contrasting seasons of both teams. It’s not going to be an easy night and if the Sharks smell blood, there’s going to be a frenzy.

Some line shuffling for tonight. The holy trinity is back together and Arcobello is trading places with Klefbom. I imagine it’s a tough pill to swallow for Acrobello considering he’s been one of the few bright spots thus far. Could just be a victim of the numbers though and needing another D man on the roster. This gets Gazdic back in tonight to lay some licks and try to slow down a Shark or two. With the current talent producing so well for San Jose, taking the body frequently will be the best way to keep them off their game.

In OKC land, Bryzgalov is getting the start tonight, so it will be interesting to hear how that goes. We need some kind of glimmer of hope here. The season is ¼ in and for all intents we’re already out of the playoffs… Sounds like Justin Schultz has had a minor setback in his recovery as well.

So… Let’s see what’s been happening as of late. We traded away a reliable stay at home D-man and a goaltending prospect for a better prospect and a unproven center so we could sign a somewhat unstable Russian. Maybe he’s the one who’s been whispering into Yakupov’s ear about passive aggressively requesting more ice time. Another heart and soul guy will be back on the ice, except this time he’ll be playing on the opposing team. Be kind Oil Country. You rode him out of town, don’t be classless and boo him on his return. Maybe we can pick something up from his work ethic.

At the very least the team has started putting the puck in the net again, coincidentally timed with Taylor Hall’s return. The PP numbers are up, but the GAA is still steady. The D still need to solidify and that’s team wide. If Bryz can recapture some of his greatness, it will take some pressure off, but he’s still in conditioning with Dubnyk starting tonight.

Should be a fairly open game with a lot of speed so hopefully Dubnyk plays like he doesn’t want to give up the starting role.

Line ups are a little less frightening tonight but Justin Schultz is still injured.
