Setting The Facts Straight by guest speaker “Ktown”

How many times did we hear him call Oilers again?

How many times did we hear him call Oilers again?

This post is from guest writer Ktown. We’re shutting the blog down soon, but he wanted to squeak one post in before doing so…

Setting the Facts Straight

I was recently pointed in the direction of a Flames blogger who wrote about the state of their team. That in itself is likely a misleading statement, as the author wrote primarily about the state of the Oilers, under the theme of “We don’t suck as bad as them”. This opened up a lively debate with a friend of mine (as avid a Flamer as I am an Oiler). Throughout our banter, I heard more of the same “facts” spewed back at me, attempting to demonstrate the Oilers’ futility in the last few (several) years.
Now, before we get too far, I want to state clearly – this is not a defense of the Oilers, nor an attempt to say “they don’t suck that bad”. The levels of suckage, futility, insanity and pure, abject failure within the organization are beyond debate. What I am submitting now is more of a simple supplication to other fan bases (and even our own) to at least get some facts straight before engaging in any spirited debate.

Facts are important in any “informed” discussion, and so the level to which facts are misstated, misquoted, Continue reading 'Setting The Facts Straight by guest speaker “Ktown”'»

The Oilers suck. This is about as much energy as we can put into a GDT. Continue reading 'Avalanche at Oilers – Game 30 – 2013-12-05 @ 7:30 PM MST – SNET-OILERS'»

PRE-GAME RANT

A little bit of news to go along with today’s GDT. The naming rights of the yet to be built new arena have been sold off to Rogers. The deal is over 13 years and includes $700 million. That amount does not go direct to the team though, instead it’s an investment in the province of Alberta. Details are still sketchy, but it could result in $700 million’s worth of new cell towers. Who knows… so whether it be in the arena or on your own couch the Oilers will be brought to you by the Rogers megalopoly. Bow down to your new supreme leader… in sports!

Okay, game talk. Bryzgalov got his noggin knocked last game resulting in an upper body injury(‘symptoms that go with a concussion or whiplash’) so LaBarbera has been called up to back up Dubnyk tonight. Dubnyk came into the last game with Bryzgalov being injured and made some key saves to keep the team alive. Although they managed to scrub out 2 points via shootout, Eakins has shuffled the lines. There was also a heavy emphasis on the power-play at practice after going 0/6 in Dallas.

Much like Columbus the Oilers have generally had the upper hand when it comes to the Coyotes, but have lost their only meeting thus far this season.

PRE-GAME RANT

Early game today. Ilya Bryzgalov gets the start again. Boyd Gordon is out due to injury. This doesn’t bode well… not that it boded well before. Too be honest, the Oilers have taken a back seat for me the past couple of games. Just can’t watch them. I think they’ve been better, aside from the CBJ game (perhaps? I wouldn’t know..), but the season is just too far gone for me to really care. The GDT threads are clinging to a thread here…

Anhyways, now that I’ve doom and gloomed this one… enjoy the game!

PRE-GAME RANT

Aside from the first two losses then win of the season, every time the oilers had suffered a loss, it resulted in a streak of 5. Three 5 game losing streaks spread over October and November sounds ridiculous, and it is. It has the Oilers sitting dead last in the Western conference and only ahead of the Sabres league wide. After gaining a little momentum the Blackhawks stomped on our brittle confidence.

That being said the team did the unthinkable and responded with a win in Nashville last night to break the 5 game curse. It feels like we are turning a corner with this new development and the prior 3 game win streak. We’re scoring plenty, and gaining confidence in our goaltenders. Sadly we’re turning the corner when the lead teams have already finished the race. It’s been a tough quarter for damn sure. Fans and players alike have been struggling with the desire to make it to the rink. If we can even manage some .500 hockey through the season end though I think everyone would be fairly pleased. We are all but eliminated from the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean we can’t compete and play the Oil brand of hockey we’ve only seen glimpses of so far.

Bryzgalov nonchalantly tallied a shutout in his first game as an Oiler. He’s a character and has some swagger which gave the team in front of him a boost. So much so that Eakins has penciled him in to play again tonight. He must not have hydration issues like Khabibulin did…

As for the rest of the crew, nothing is changing there either. Grebeshkov, Arcobello and Jones are all playing again tonight and lines remain the same.

Since embarrassing the Blue Jackets in Edmonton, they in turn embarrassed the Leafs. No one likes a route so expect a more competitive squad tonight with a little more grit. We have traditionally owned them, but they’ll be looking to reclaim some of that pride we kicked repeatedly.
