Alright, the ship hasn’t been righted, but there is a blue spot in the sky amidst this storm of sorrow. It’s a very small spot, but it’s there. Coming off the heels of a victory, yes that’s right we won a game, the Oilers are playing host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Oilers last played Saturday night against the Flames and didn’t turn up the heat until late in the game for a come from behind victory. Hopefully it’s a turning point for the team’s waning confidence but it’s the Flames… A team many predicted to finish dead last this season.

The Blue Jackets are another winnable game, but it all depends on who shows up. Exciting as 3rd period comebacks are, it’s much easier to play with a lead. I’m sure the fans would love to see a home victory. It’s been a long time. Historically we have owned them though(29-10-8) so tonight could be that home win everyone is pining for.

Bryzgalov will be in the lineup tonight sporting #80. He’ll have to settle for a front row seat tough, Dubnyk will get the start. Coach Eakins has been happy with his play of late and will roll with him until Dubs convinces him otherwise. Another familiar face will be back on the ice tonight. Justin Schultz is returning from a groin injury and will be paired with Belov.

LaBarbera was waived to make room for Bryzgalov and has cleared. Not much change to the lines from Saturday aside from Larsen rotating out to make room for Justin Schultz.

None of us are as strong as all of us, chop wood, carry water…

New motivational slogan painted in the Oilers dressing room. I’m guessing the chop wood was from Lowe. He was good at that. And carry water… to distract the Sharks? They love that shit!

Tonight’s XBOX achievement is to score a goal. I don’t care if we lose 7-1, just score a goal. The drought has gone too long in our own barn. It should be the opposite. Not that we’re a dominant road team, but the road losses have been more competitive at least. Sharks did play last night while the Oilers rested, but there is no advantage in that with the contrasting seasons of both teams. It’s not going to be an easy night and if the Sharks smell blood, there’s going to be a frenzy.

Some line shuffling for tonight. The holy trinity is back together and Arcobello is trading places with Klefbom. I imagine it’s a tough pill to swallow for Acrobello considering he’s been one of the few bright spots thus far. Could just be a victim of the numbers though and needing another D man on the roster. This gets Gazdic back in tonight to lay some licks and try to slow down a Shark or two. With the current talent producing so well for San Jose, taking the body frequently will be the best way to keep them off their game.

In OKC land, Bryzgalov is getting the start tonight, so it will be interesting to hear how that goes. We need some kind of glimmer of hope here. The season is ¼ in and for all intents we’re already out of the playoffs… Sounds like Justin Schultz has had a minor setback in his recovery as well.

So… Let’s see what’s been happening as of late. We traded away a reliable stay at home D-man and a goaltending prospect for a better prospect and a unproven center so we could sign a somewhat unstable Russian. Maybe he’s the one who’s been whispering into Yakupov’s ear about passive aggressively requesting more ice time. Another heart and soul guy will be back on the ice, except this time he’ll be playing on the opposing team. Be kind Oil Country. You rode him out of town, don’t be classless and boo him on his return. Maybe we can pick something up from his work ethic.

At the very least the team has started putting the puck in the net again, coincidentally timed with Taylor Hall’s return. The PP numbers are up, but the GAA is still steady. The D still need to solidify and that’s team wide. If Bryz can recapture some of his greatness, it will take some pressure off, but he’s still in conditioning with Dubnyk starting tonight.

Should be a fairly open game with a lot of speed so hopefully Dubnyk plays like he doesn’t want to give up the starting role.

Line ups are a little less frightening tonight but Justin Schultz is still injured.

Gagner makes his triumphant return to the line up tonight. Don’t expect an immediate impact as he’s been sidelined for quite some time due to Kassian’s reckless stick in the pre-season. Ideally it will provide a team wide lift though.

Tonight is their first home game in awhile aside from the Caps game, but this one has the potential to feel like a road game. Someone turned off the lights and the cockroaches are coming out decorated in Leafs apparel and attempting to take over Rexall. Much like any original 6 team being in town. Getting early momentum is key.

Bachman will be tending the net tonight and hopefully won’t have to turn away near as many shots as he did last game in a 47 save performance losing eventually in a shootout to the Kings. The Leafs don’t shoot as often, but when they do, they’ve been making the best of it with what is currently 3rd ranking in league shooting percentage behind St. Louis and Tampa Bay.

With Gagner back on the ice, the Oilers top line gets shuffled once more. He’ll be centering Yakupov and Eberle. Yakupov finally capitalized on his first goal of the season one timing a tough angled rebound behind Quick. Ideally it’s the first step to restoring his mojo. He also played a good team game so he might finally be coming around to Eakins system.

The Oilers had some terribly timed penalties last game so looking for a more disciplined performance. The Leafs being a high percentage team, there’s no need to make things easier on them.

As the Oilers longest road trip of the season continues they have a layover in Edmonton so why not squeeze a game in.  The Washington Capitals just so happen to be in town.  Perfect.  Quick stop at home before hitting the road for 2 more games.  The Oilers and Caps played one another just 10 days ago so they should be fresh in each other’s minds.  Time for the coaching battle to take over and see who can outduel the other.  The Capitals won at home 4-2 so the Oilers will be looking exact a little vengeance and take the win streak to 3.

Ovechkin is the man to stop tonight.  Through his first 9 games he has 9 goals which is only his second best start in a season.  Slacker…  Oilers have their own secret weapon.  Arcobello!  Who dat?  Just the Oilers leading scorer thus far in the season.  The rookie has tallied 10 assists so far.  Time for a goal or two!

The Oilers will need some secondary goal support for the next little while with Hall on the sidelines.  For Steve-O’s sake we’ll say that Hemsky isn’t a secondary scorer, but last game Smid, Petry and Jones all tallied so we’ll need more of the same.

TSN tells me that Dubnyk has gone from “who’s cold” to “who’s hot”, so hopefully he can stay there for awhile.
