PRE-GAME RANT
Tonight the Oil face off with the Avalanche. I think they’ll be facing Varlamov in net (Giguere is doubtful for tonight after suffering a groin injury against the Canucks). That can be good because hey, he’s a pretty mediocre goaltender. That can be bad though because the Oilers always seem to stink it up against the backups if you can call him the backup. He certainly is the less skilled goalie of the two.
Anyways, it’s pretty early yet.. no word on lines or anything. I don’t think we’ll see the Nuge back yet, since he was wearing the no-contact jersey at last check.
I’d have to figure that Dubnyk would start tonight as a mercy to Oilers fans. Khabi got jeered by fans early on after letting everything go in through the five hole. But you never know here.

Let the guy do his job
Tom Renney:
It’s pretty easy to take pot shots as to what we’re doing and not doing. It’s the growth of a team that we’re worried about. Sometimes I might be protective of how I deploy those kids, when, where and how. The operative word being ‘kids’. These are going to be men in the not too distant future and I want to make sure they make it that far. I think you will see the kids start to kill penalties more. We’re working off my timetable, thank you very much, and we will continue to.
Absolutely love that quote. My suspicions on the kids have been confirmed by Renney. He IS sheltering them. The media (and some fans) have been all over Renney for giving the kids low minutes compared to Horcoff’s line.
At times this has been warranted, but I think I would actually say that generally people like to find one topic-of-the-week and harp on it to death without considering WHY this could be happening.
It’s because he’s been sheltering them from the tough minutes. I think it should be obvious that he’s been protecting them from playing in tough situations such as defensive zone starts and, at times, from playing tougher opponents.

Andy Sutton has re-signed with the Edmonton Oilers. The deal is worth $1.5M in salary, but also comes with $250K in bonuses which will be earned based on games played and the Oilers making the playoffs. I think this is a good depth signing for the team. It’s structured perfectly, giving incentive to Sutton to play more games, and also not being a very big cap hit at all (less than his current cap hit). Sutton has been a reliable player for the Oilers this year, so it makes me happy to see him back for another year.
With this signing, however, you have to wonder if one of our d-men may be moved at the deadline. The most likely candidate that we’d try to move is Cam Barker. He hasn’t really fit in too well here. He’s showed very small flashes of why he was drafted 3rd overall, but those have been brief. It is also possible that the Oilers could move a guy like Theo Peckham to open the door a bit more for some off-season signing or trade for a big-name defenseman (something the Oilers really need).

PRE-GAME RANT
Well, so much for win and you’re in… Nikolai Khabibulin plays again tonight, despite the loss on Wednesday. I didn’t think he played though, and the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch seems to figure we’re showcasing him. Sounds good to me.
Andy Sutton draws in tonight (thank god!). There are rumors flying about now that the Oilers are trying to re-sign him to a 1-year deal (also, thank God). That is definitely fine by me. I hope they manage to get that done. A 1-year deal would be perfect. I’m not sure who comes out of the line up. It sounds like he’ll be replacing Cam Barker tonight, who hasn’t looked very good at all on his return (and for me, I don’t think he’s looked all that great all year… some flashes of a good player here and there though).

Working on an extension with the Oilers..
From the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, via Twitter:
The Oilers and D Andy Sutton are discussing a one-year extension. He’s not sure he wants to be a UFA and likes Edmonton. #Oilers
I have to say I’m pretty excited about that. Despite the mystifying coaching decision to pull him out of the Oilers line up, Andy Sutton has been one of this year’s few bright spots. At his age too, a one-year deal is all that makes sense for us. For a team that has a bit of a history of giving aging players too lengthy of a contract, I’m happy to hear that a one-year deal is being worked on. Get it done, and for god sakes, don’t pull him out of the lineup anymore, Renney.
