Lets get a defibrillator running…

Sinclair making Solo her bitch

Despite what anyone may think, we are indeed still alive and kicking in this little corner of the internerd. Unfortunately, it is the worst part of the year for hockey so there really isn’t much to say.

That said, there have been a couple items that popped up lately, so lets give them a little looksie and banter pointlessly about them in order to occupy ourselves until something real happens.

Hall and Eberle Extensions
Apparently the Oilers are looking into extending both Hall and Eberle to extensions in the near future (Omark also hasn’t signed his QO, but that’s a footnote). There was some discussion of Kane/Toews, Skinner and Tavares as comparables. Basically anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 per, over 5-6 years.

Dubnyk and Petry signed, Gagner headed to Arbitration

By , July 5, 2012 4:21 pm

As per the Oilers site (thanks Metal&Oil for the heads up in the comments):

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with goaltender Devan Dubnyk and defenceman Jeff Petry on two-year contracts.

Edit:
Also, as per Elliotte Friedman:

Salary arb filers: Bonino (ANA), McGinn (COL), Bachman/Fistric (DAL), Quincey (DET), Gagner (EDM), Versteeg (FLA), Diaz (MON)…

Wonder what he gets awarded, or do you think he signs beforehand?

Division getting tougher?

By , July 4, 2012 10:36 am

Of all the divisions….

Looks like the division just got a whole lot tougher.

As per TSN:

Free agent forward Zach Parise and defenceman Ryan Suter have both agreed to terms on contracts with the Minnesota Wild.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune both deals are 13 years in length.

Not sure about the dollars, but I imagine the cap hits won’t be terrible (I’m guessing 5/6 mil per for each). Considering the Wild had over 14mil in space, I’m sure it’ll be easy for them to work it in.

Edit: Yikes. As per TSN again: Both deals are worth $98 million over 13 years, carrying an average annual value of $7.538 million.

As for the rest of the division, looks like this year will be a doozy. With the Canucks being the perennial winner (last few years) and the Wild getting instantly better it’ll be interesting to see how the Avs, Oil and Flames end up in the standings. Hopefully the Oilers are ready to take that next step…otherwise it just got harder for them.

Next up…Matt Carle.

Best picture ever

What is quite possibly the best pic I have ever seen of a hockey player. As seen on Backhand Shelf.

Available Free Agents

I think he'd be the ideal FA pickup

Considering we just looked at the draft, I figured it couldn’t hurt to take a peek at the available (for now) free agents that are out there, and who would fit on the team.

Although we should keep in mind that Hall, Eberle, Petry and the such will be getting paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid right away, so we can’t spend too much (without getting Horcoff, Khabibulin off the books etc).

Also keep in mind, I feel that we need D and goaltending far more than forwards so that’ll be reflected in this post. Feel free to add anyone in the comments you would like the Oilers to go after.
