Smid traded to dirty Flames, Bryzgalov signed

Hey folks.. I must keep this short, as I am still away in Vegas… but I wanted to quickly whip up a post on today’s events.

Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy to the Calgary Flames for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit. First off, I absolutely love Laurent Brossoit. Steve-O, Trogdor and I got to see a lot of him here in Edmonton for the Oil Kings, and he is a terrific goaltender. He’s currently playing in the ECHL for Alaska where he has played 2 (and a smidge) games, both of them shutouts. He played in a 3rd for 6 minutes and didn’t allow any goals, so he has currently not allowed a goal in 126 minutes. The ECHL isn’t exactly the greatest league, but it’s the success you want to hear about for a goalie in the system. He is definitely an upgrade on Roy.

Roman Horak, all I can do is read stats, for the most part. He’s a 2-way centreman. His numbers aren’t what I consider too stellar (22 years old, 82GP, 5 goals, 13 assists). I’ll have to wait and see to judge that one.

As all the media caught onto right away, this trade seemed to be a salary dump so they could make the next move, signing Ilya Bryzgalov. Now, I actually like this. Bryzgalov is a nut, but aside from in Philly, where everyone sucks in goal, Bryzgalov had been a good goaltender in his career. I am curious to know the details of the contract. Apparently Smid has to pass a physical to complete the deal before Bryzy will be officially signed. Some part of me hopes that he fails the physical and is stuck with the Oilers, because I absolutely love Smid. I like Craig MacTavish a lot as GM, but I can’t get behind turning all your blueline (nearly) into a bunch of offensive minded players that are unaware of how to take care of their own end of the rink. I guess that duty will fall to Nick Schultz and Andrew Ference.

I’m not sure just yet how much I like this deal, but I sure like it a lot more than just about any deal that involves Jordan Eberle.

Hemsky rumors abound. Bryzgalov is a nut. Smid is a Flame. Aren’t the Flames suppose to be acquiring prospects, not trading them? I guess twitter and I will be BFF’s tonight. I had a feeling players would be making the famous locker room switch in Philly.

Hate this trade; moving out one of our best stay-at-home Dmen for a career AHL centerman & an unproven rookie goaltender just to make room for a nutbar Russian goalie. Never mind Smid was one of only a handful of Oilers who played his heart out almost every game, could someone expain how depleting an already weak blueline for the sake of marginal upgrades in net helps this team win more???

Oh & congrats to MacT for making our provincial rival even better today.

This doesn’t make a ton of sense & I think this is clearly an attempt by Lowe/Mac T to keep their jobs. I think it’s a desperate act to make a trade like this with your biggest rival.

We need to gutter anyone and everyone with OBC blood. Probably Eakins too…………. I don’t think Todd Nelson was given enough consideration for the Head Coaching job. Look at the players coming up from OKC.

Not a fan of losing Smid to the Flames at all, especially just to take Bryz on a 1-year. Hoping there might be something else happening soon to explain it better. Re Bryz, hopfully he keeps his head here on earth and improves the GA and record, but for right now seems weird to reduce the defence to do that. There has to be another deal in the works?

Totally Agree with you LNOF. Seems like there should be another shoe dropping. Fake reports about Hemmer-brand shoes being moved were seriously freaking me out tonight but honestly this deal doesn’t make sense to me without another piece. We are never going to change things until we get some of the right stuff on D. And if we’re really going to fix goaltending I think we need someone consistent , which Bryz is not. I’m glad at least it’s a 1 year deal, and maybe he’ll do better than we think.
I just hope this wasn’t change for the sake of change rather than real improvement.
