So today is NHL draft day for 2013 (1pm MST). Typically, the NHL splits up round 1 and round 2-7 into separate days, but they’re doing it all in one shot this year, because it’s going so late (it’s about a week late).
The Avalanche have made no secret that they are selecting Nathan MacKinnon first overall. Some believe this to be posturing. I don’t know. Seems like it really is what they’ll do. I can’t see them flipping picks with anyone, and as some have said.. why be secret about it if you really know who you want? If they are hard set on MacKinnon, they wouldn’t drop down and risk losing him. So I expect the first 4 picks to go: Nathan MacKinnon (COL), Seth Jones (FLA), Jonathan Drouin (TBL), Sasha Barkov (NSH). I’m hoping that the Oilers get to take either Sean Monahan or Darnell Nurse. Organization depth at centre is terrible. Monahan would help that out a bit. As or Nurse, he looks to be a pretty well-rounded D with a strong focus on defense and physicality (making him my favorite type of defenseman).
There have been a heck of a lot of rumors involving the Oilers, as of late. The latest buzz seems to be around Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn. It sounds like he may be providing a list of teams of where he’d accept a trade to… he has a limited No Trade Clause. This brings me to one point about the Oilers. No way in hell would a guy like Braydon Coburn have a NTC on the Oilers. Say what you will about the team, but that is one thing they’ve been doing right for several years, and I applaud them. I like Coburn, but I’m not sure how the heck a guy like him got a NTC.
Also said to be in play (but no involvement by Oilers, I don’t think) is Cory Schneider. Sounds like it’s been too hard to move the big @Strombone1 contract anywhere, so they are expected to move Schneider. He will garner a heck of a lot of interest around the league.
Letang re-signed with the Penguins today. I’d imagine he still gets moved. The contract is for 8 years with an average of $7.25M, and he has a limited No Trade Clause (15 teams). I can see him being dealt still, as that is a lot of money to tie up. I have hopes it is not to the Oilers, as I think that is just too much money, even though he is quite good.
Terry Jones speculates that the Oilers will have 3 new faces today that don’t come via the draft. I’d be surprised if we had even one, but one GM did say that MacTavish has his fingers in everything. He’s been extremely busy, which seems to be a stark contrast to the former GM here. It IS one thing to want a deal, however. But, at least he’s doing a lot of work. That’s all we can really ask, I suppose.
We will do a live blog here of the players selected by the Oilers, and eventually do a write up on impressions of this year’s draft and Oilers acquisitions.
12:50 – First trade done. 50th overall (2nd round) from SJ to Pittsburgh for Tyler Kennedy.
13:07 – To no one’s surprise, Gary Bettman is being booed right through his opening speech.
13:10 – #1 – COL – pick Nathan MacKinnon.. as expected
13:17 – #2 – FLA – pick Sasha Barkov.. wow.. just wow. Good player, but this is a surprise. Everyone figured Jones at #2.
13:21 – #3 – TBL – pick Jonathan Drouin. This was expected, until Talon went and left Jones on the table.
13:27 – #4 – NSH – pick Seth Jones. They don’t need D in Nashville, but you know Poile was fist pumping after this one.
13:33 – #5 – CAR – pick Elias Lindholm… this decreases the likelihood that Monahan is there at 7. I’m thinking we will get Darnell Nurse, however.
13:40 – #6 – CGY – pick Sean Monahan. Go fuck yourself, Feaster. You too Tallon, for screwing this whole thing up.
13:45 – #7 – EDM – pick Darnell Nurse. This is the safe pick. I like it. Nurse is a big kid, plays tough as nails.. brings some offensive ability. Excellent choice.
13:52 – #8 – BUF – pick Rasmus Ristolainen.
13:52 – The Wild just traded Cal Clutterbuck and #70 in draft to the Islanders for Nino Niederreiter. Disappointing that the Oilers couldn’t snag Clutterbuck. Could deal for both teams. Still think “Nintendorider” is a great player.
13:58 – Devils trade #9 pick to Canucks for Cory Schneider. Wow. Interesting. Brodeur’s replacement has arrived.
14:03 – #9 – VAN – pick Bo Horvat. Nichsushkin slowly dropping.. like most Russians do at the draft.
14:09 – #10 – DAL – pick Valeri Nichushkin.. finally.
14:15 – #11 – PHI – pick Sam Morin
14:21 – #12 – PHX – pick Max Domi, son of Tie Domi
14:24 – Bettman just announced the Clutterbuck trade finally.. just finalized. #70 pick got added to the deal.
14:27 – #13 – WPG – pick Joshua Morrissey
14:35 – #14 – CBJ – pick Alexander Wennberg
14:40 – #15 – NYI – pick Ryan Pulock
14:46 – #16 – BUF – pick Nikita Zadorov
14:52 – #17 – OTT – pick Curtis Lazar. Well Oil fans, so much for that, I guess.
14:54 – Detroit trades #18 pick to San Jose for #20 and 58
14:57 – #18 – SJS – pick Mirco Mueller
15:02 – #19 – CBJ – pick Kirby Rychel
15:06 – #20 – DET – pick Anthony Mantha
15:12 – #21 – TOR – pick Frederik Gauthier
15:17 – #22 – CGY – pick Emile Poirier. Went off the board a bit here, and surprised some by not taking local boy Hunter Shinkaruk.
15:22 – #23 – WSH – pick Andre Burakovsky
15:28 – #24 – VAN – pick Hunter Shinkaruk. Some surprise that he didn’t go to Calgary.
15:33 – #25 – MTL – pick Mike McCarron
15:41 – #26 – ANA – pick Shea Theodore
15:47 – #27 – CBJ – pick Marko Dano
15:51 – #28 – CGY – pick Morgan Klimchuk with their final first round pick.
15:56 – #29 – DAL – pick Jason Dickinson
16:02 – #30 – CHI – pick local prospect Ryan Hartman with the final pick of round 1.
16:21 – Carolina trades Pick #35 and Jamie McBain to Buffalo for Andrej Sekera
16:28 – Edmonton trades pick #37 to Los Angeles for pick #57, 88 and 96. Reasoning? Well, stocking the cupboards.. but the Oilers wanted Zachary Fucale. Montreal took him right before, so they decided to shotgun blast the next pick. They have back to back picks near the end of round 2. If Jarry is there, I’m guessing they take him with one of the picks.
17:00 – MacTavish and Paul Holmgren (Philadelphia Flyers GM) have had several conversations together. Braydon Coburn deal in the works. Hopefully they get something done.
17:15 – #56 – EDM – pick Marc-Olivier Roy, right winger
17:16 – Edmonton trades #57 to St. Louis for picks #83, 94 and 113 (3rd, and 2 4ths).
17:45 – #83 – EDM – pick Bogdan Yakimov, a huge center from Russia. From Elite Prospects: “Yakimov is a large center with a terrific set of hands. Owns great playmaking ability and vision. Is very hard to knock off the puck”
17:56 – #88 – EDM – pick another big Russian, this time Anton Slepyshev (LW)
18:04 – #94 – EDM – pick Jackson Houck, a RWer with the Vancouver Giants
18:06 – #96 – EDM – pick Kyle Platzer, a smallish centre/RW with the London Knights
18:25 – #113 – EDM – pick Aidan Muir, a big centre playing in the Midwest Elite Hockey League. Ya, me neither.
18:42 – #128 – EDM – pick Evan Campbell of the BCHL, a left winger with good size. He had 66 points in 51 games with the Langley Rivermen
19:10 – #158 – EDM – pick Ben Betker, a 6’4 200+ lbs Defenseman with the Everett Silvertips.
19:42 – #188 – EDM – pick Greg Chase, a 6’0 190 lbs right shot center playing with the Calgary Hitmen.
So to summarize,
7th overall – Darnell Nurse, a hulking left-shot defenseman who played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He had 12 goals, 29 assists in 68 games last year.
56th overall – Marc-Olivier Roy, a slightly smaller center playing for the Armada of the Q’. He had 29 goals and 38 assists in 65 games last year.
83rd overall – Bogdan Yakimov, a very big center that seems to have skating issues, but is strong on the puck. Looks like a bit of a project. He played with Reaktor Nizhnekamsk if the MHL (Russian Minor Hockey League) last year.
88th overall – Anton Slepyshev, another big Russian.. this time a left winger. Doesn’t look like there is a tonne of offense in there, but who knows. He did spend some time in the KHL last year, at least.
94th overall – Jackson Houck – a right winger, 6’0, 185 lbs, who led the Vancouver Giants in scoring last year with 57 points in 69 games.
96th overall – Kyle Platzer, 5’11, 184 lbs center / right wing with the London Knights. He had 5 goals, 17 assists in 65 games last year.
113rd overall – Aidan Muir, a big center who will go the College route as of next year.
128th overall – Evan Campbell, a bigger left winger playing with the Langley Rivermen of the BCHL. He had 20 goals, 46 assists in 51 games last year.
158th overall – Ben Betker a big defenseman playing with Everett Silvertips of the WHL. He had 6 points in 68 games last year.
188th overall – Greg Chase, a 6’0 190 lbs center playing with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. He had 17 goals and 32 assists in 69 games last year. He is nephew to former NHLer Kelly Chase.
