PRE-GAME RANT

I won’t sugar coat it, it will take a miracle to make it into the playoffs now. The Oilers had a terrible weekend.. not just because of how they played, but because of how other teams played. The bottom teams are catching up, and the teams ahead of them are gaining some ground. It does not look good. But humoring the possibility, the famous playoff chances site – Sports Club Stats – has Edmonton at 14.7% now. An 8-2-0 record will likely do it. A 7-2-1 gives us a 68.1% chance, by their calculations. It ain’t ova till it’s ova. But it’s pretty much over. I still have a glimmer of hope though, being the sucker I am. But the Oilers are going to have to play better if they have a hope in hell of doing it. Lucky for the Oilers (I suppose?) we have 7 of the last 10 games at home. Three of the games are versus less awesome teams – the Flames, Coyotes, and Avalanche. The rest are going to be tough ones. They are against the Ducks (3 times), the Wild (twice), the Hawks, and the Canucks. It isn’t over… but it sure doesn’t look good. Their biggest hope of catching a team lies in Detroit. They also have the teams like Phoenix, and Dallas to worry about too. If those teams pace the Oilers, we’re done.

It doesn’t look good.. but it’s sure better than drafting #1 overall yet again.

Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers #Oilers lines: 4-93-14 91-89-64 94-10-28 37-52-13. Would appear that 83 is injured, at least a likely game time decision at best.

    Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers 3m #Oilers defence pairings: 5-2 15-19 6-45.
Potter is out, Fistric is in.

  2. Racki says:

    Hooray to Fistric returning, finally.

As far as Hemsky.. meh. We could use him, but not end of the world.

  3. dawgtoy says:

Injured foot will in fact keep Hemmer out. He’s been invisible as of late, so whatever. Jones takes his place with Smitty and Horc.

  4. Racki says:

Really that should be a decent line. You’d think those 3 could get stuff done together. Smytty’s been a bit of a boat anchor this year though, and not sure how much of a factor Jones’ eye has been.

But yah.. Hemsky isn’t the big factor he once was. Some nights he’s stellar.. other nights, he looks not bad, but just not getting things done. I have never thought he was a bad player though.. just way too streaky.

  5. John says:

The only thing about Hemsky being out of the lineup really is just matchup dynamics; if he’s playing the opposing team has to to respect him & cover him. Now the Quacks just have to shut down Hall, Ebs, & Schultz & bingo, they win! Just for the record I have this game pencilled in as a “must win”. Mathematically that is not the case but really, if they lose this game they would have to go on another 4-5 game win streak to get back in it & I don’t see that happening. Hoping for a 4-3 OT win from the Oil :)

  6. Alan-NottsUK says:

OT win is the perfect result, gets the ducks closer to clinching, and that should mean them resting players up for the remaining games 2 of which are against the Oilers.

  7. John says:

Well there we go, was fun while it lasted but reality looks like a bitch :( The look on Horcoffs face during the post game interview said as much. Will be interesting to see if they continue to play reasonably well or throw in the towel & coast through the string.

  8. hemmerlady says:

Eh, you never know. My vote is for “keep on truckin’”. Remember the year we knocked the Nucks out of the 8th playoff spot? A couple wins for us, a couple losses for (a lot of) the others – could be a different ball game. Yeah I know we’re probably done. :) I’m an underdog fan- remember our many game 7 miracles…
