Wow, what a big win for the Penguins. They picked up Jarome Iginla and lost no current roster pieces and still have the cupboards stocked well enough.
Going the other way are two forward college prospects, Ben Hanowski, Kenneth Agostino, and also the Penguins 2013 first-round pick. TSN intitially caught a sniff of a rumor that Iginla was traded to the Bruins, and this was at first what was believed to be true (reported by Aaron Ward as a done deal). Sister station RDS (as well as Sportsnet) stated adamantly that this was not true as the Bruins were denying it. Shortly after, the Flames told the media to hang around after their game, as an announcement was to be made. After a whole bunch of babble, Jay Feaster finally spilled the beans that Iginla had been traded to the Penguins.
The deal with the Penguins looks better on paper than the one they had set up with the Bruins. One of the forwards (Hanowski) is a pretty big kid and put up decent numbers with St. Cloud State (is Lando Calrissian is coach?). Agostino leads Yale University in scoring this year. Time will tell on this one, but at least it’s better for the Flames than what they’d have gotten from the Bruins.
I think the fallout of the Bruins trade sets up an Oilers/Bruins trade, so watch for that soon.
