PRE-GAME RANT

So the Oilers face the unbeaten-in-regulation-time Chicago Blackhawks. 18 games in, and their mere 3 losses came in overtime. That’s friggen amazing. They have nearly double the points as the Oilers. Their goals differential (goals for minus goals against) is a league leading +23 to Edmonton’s -6. Edmonton’s -6 really isn’t that bad. It’s bad.. but not awfully bad. They haven’t been scoring, but they’ve been keeping teams off the score sheet fairly well. Edmonton is actually 12th in goals against (12th lowest) which is actually quite phenomenal for a team near the bottom of the heap. However, they have 3 more goals for than Minnesota, who sit 30th in goals for. So that definitely is how we got here. Who in their right mind would have said that the Oilers would be a defensively sound team but provide next to no offence? What happened to the run and gun…. or at least, what happened to the gun part? We do a lot of running around.

Last year, the Oilers smoked the Blackhawks not once, but twice. This is the team that Sam Gagner scored his 8 points against. The Oilers also scored 9 against them in another game. The Oilers outscored the Blackhawks 24 – 15 in their season series last year. This is a team they CAN beat. It’s not likely they will though, especially with the Blackhawks being on such a tear. It could be an ugly loss. But hey, they play the games for a reason. I’m hoping we can be the team that ends the Blackhawks’ crazy streak.

Too early yet to figure out what the lines are, and who starts. I’m going to guess that we’ll see similar lines and a start from Dubnyk tonight. I’ll update these later.

PRE-GAME RANT

The lines I have below aren’t real, just as a heads up. I don’t know what the real lines are. For the sake of laziness, I threw Ben Eager in Hall’s place, and Jones in Eager’s place. This is possibly what can happen tonight, although I doubt it. Who knows though.

Anyways, I can’t believe how crappy this team still is this year. They can’t score for a damn, and that’s a huge problem. I am not sure this is worth putting much effort into a GDT. The Oilercoaster is at the bottom, so I’m guessing we’re due for a win any moment now to get us thinking this team is remotely better than another last place (ish) finish.

PRE-GAME RANT

Two returns tonight: the return of Tom Gilbert to Edmonton, and the “thank fucking god” return of Theodore Tiberius Peckman. I have no idea what his middle name really is… maybe Don Cherry knows. Anyways, this team is in need of some muscle, so it will be good to have him back. I suspect it will take quite a while for him to really catch up to the NHL game, having missed as much hockey as he has, in addition to playing like poop last year. I still am a believer in the skills of Theo Peckham. Sure, maybe not as good as 2010-11 made him look, but I think he’ll still be a very solid 3rd pairing guy that will bring muscle now and then. I just hope he’s completely healthy. Peckham is going to play with Mark Fistric. That will be a pretty feared pairing.. hopefully it’s the other team that fears them though, and not Krueger.

Forward lines are unknown since today was an optional skate. Absentees: Hall, Gagner, Yakupov, Hartikainen, Belanger, J. Schultz and N. Schultz. Criticize away.

“Fat guy in a little coat” gets the nod in net tonight.

PRE-GAME RANT

Lines look like the same lines as last game. Only difference is Khabibulin will start this one rather than coming in part way. He’s been looking pretty damn good so far, so might as well ride this before he burns out. But I’d imagine that Dubnyk is still the #1 here.

So for those with short memories, the last time we played the Kings was the shit show in Edmonton. The game was memorable for a couple reasons. One, outraged fans (of which I was one of them at the game) littered the ice with drinks and whatever else they had on hand (I didn’t do that, however, but only because my angle was bad ;) ). Two, this game went to overtime courtesy of a beautiful goal in the dying seconds by Nail Yakupov who batted it into the net then booked it down the ice to do his now famous / heinous knee slide. During the game I had an official cameraman sitting behind me and he showed me the shots. The look on Nail’s face was priceless and he hopped past his teammates and then sped down ice.Darryl Sutter quote-worthy as always had this to say about the Yakupov celebration: “You score a goal you get to celebrate. I had no problem with it.”

I also recall Jonathan Quick and Mike Richards trying to intimidate Yakupov because he shot the puck into the net maybe a second after the whistle. It was pretty close and not at all a big deal, but those two got their panties all up in a bunch over it. Later in the game, Taylor Hall intentionally pulled the puck out from underneath Quick after a whistle, did a small juke then flipped it into the net. This was all intentional (unlike Yakupov’s slightly late shot) for the shit Quick gave Yakupov, and it gave me a good laugh to see him do that. I’m surprised he didn’t get an unsportsmanlike penalty though given all the other poor calls that night (that would have been deserved though).

Anyways, hopefully the Oilers come out flying and teach these assholes a lesson to put their canes away when they come into Rexall. Bitch about shit in your own building, not ours. If you don’t like it, do something about it on the scoreboard, much like the Oilers did that night. I say this often, but with the Kings struggling this year, this is a game the Oilers have to win if they want to look like a real hockey team.
