PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers play the second game in a back-to-back set of games tonight and they face the undefeated Sharks for it. The Sharks have been steamrolling teams in part due to elevated performances by Marleau and Thornton. They are killing it with 14 points each in 6 games… and Antii Niemi has been solid in net for them posting 5 of the 6 wins so far and a sub 2.00 GAA.

The Oilers mailed it in last night, so I don’t have much faith in them tonight. The pessimist says momentum going in says they should get killed. The optimist says that teams that have bad games often have big bounce back games. We’ll see which route the Oilers go, but these Sharks have been dominant, so I’m not holding my breath for a good game tonight. The Oil can’t autopilot their way through this one, like in Phoenix.

No word on the lineup just yet that I’ve found, so for now I assume things are the same, although there is a good chance we see Khabibulin tonight for no other reason than to shelter Doobie from potential embarrassment.

EDIT: OK Lander has been called up to replace Horcoff (hurt neck after being hit from behind by Doan)… Paajarvi has been sent down (since we have to send someone down to recall Lander). Fistric might slot in as well if Petrell is out (i.e. we go with 11F 7D).

OILERS LINES (PROJECTED)

Hall – Nugent-Hopkins – Eberle
Yakupov – Gagner – Hemsky
Smyth – Belanger – Petrell
Hordichuk – Lander – Hartikainen

Smid – Petry
N. Schultz – J. Schultz
Whitney – Potter

Dubnyk
Khabibulin

Don’t be surprised if Fistric plays the wing on the 4th line, if Krueger’s interview was telling anything. Krueger mentioned that Fistric played a bit on wing in Dallas.. and despite the very short amount of opportunities, Coach K doesn’t seem to have any use for Hordichuk (although possibly since SJ has no heavy in the lineup).

This is one thing I wish we took a different stance on. We can either be the ones reacting or make the other side do the reacting. I’d dress him, play him for a few minutes early on banging some guys around a bit and see if he can get some people focusing more on him then the actual game… like teams used to do to us a lot when we went without a heavy.

I used to think we needed a heavy to combat the other team’s heavy. I have less a belief in that ideal now. Now I think it would be nice to go on the offensive in that area. Stir some shit up…. especially against a team like the Sharks that can out-hockey us in their sleep

I’m going to call this one a “road win” for the Oilers. We lost in shootout, but really I had them inked down for the loss before this game started. Back to back games… road game… playing the #1 team overall… Horcoff out… recipe for disaster, but they got it done and stole a point. Great work.

Not often I go to bed happy after a loss. Good well fought point. Concur with Racki.

Still lots of defensive zone brain farts & mad scrambles going on but overall if you would have told me 3 days ago that the Oilers were gonna go into SJ & come out of it with a point I would have been smiling!

Yup, plenty of bad giveaways, and a few too many odd man rushes. The odd man rushes you’re going to see often vs. a team like the Sharks though. As for the giveaways.. they were stupid brain farts, yes. Hopefully those are things that you won’t let yourself happen very often.
