The Oilers are finding ways to win games again. It’s great to see. Also great to see is that the Oilers are clawing their way up the standings. No, they haven’t moved from 29th, but they are nearly 28th now, and could be tied for 27th after today. They sit 6 points behind a big 4-way tie for 22nd, and 3 points behind Minnesota in 26th. It’s time to put the thoughts of high draft picks well behind us and just aim for an improvement in the standings. I think this year has already been a big improvement, even though 29th place doesn’t indicate that at all. We’re the 2nd best PP, the 18th PK, and I haven’t seen any games this year (unlike previous years) where we’ve been smoked and embarrassed. This is a small improvement to cling on, and a sad state of affairs when you consider it good when we’re not getting lambasted. But hey, an improvement is an improvement. Add to that, the Oilers are 12-10-4 since the All Star Break. Not a giant feat, but that would be a 0.538 point percentage which would be good for 21st place by today’s standards if they kept that pace all year. I suppose I’m grasping at straws here, but I think we’re a team closer to being a real team and it has a lot to do with solidifying our back end more. If this team can find out how to score at even strength (i.e. get some scoring out of the likes of Hemsky and co.), we’ll be a much better team in 2012-13. But, as usual, I could be dreaming.

Anyways, no line up announced yet, so I’m just going to post last night’s line up here again. Oh, one change. Chris Vande Velde was recalled yesterday because Shawn Horcoff hurt his back on a faceoff in the last game. So I assume he’ll be in for this game this afternoon, possibly even right in Horcoff’s place. I missed that game too, due to the Oil Kings, but watched the goals and shootout. Dubnyk was pretty superb in the shootout. I assume he’ll be in today too.
EDIT: Confirmed by #NHL_Oilers tweet, Dubnyk will start.

Go Oil! Keep winning.

Above is a pic from the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The guy on the left is Erik Gudbransson of the Florida Panthers. The Oilers would probably love a Gudbransson in their line up right now. Hell, they’d even love a Taylor Hall in their line up right now. But, they will get a Theo Peckham in their line up, courtesy of an Andy Sutton healthy scratch. This paragraph sounds very Gene Principe-esque. Anyways, I think they’ve got to really play a guy like him down the stretch so they can decide whether he’s going to be part of their long term future or not. With all the talk about improving our back end, some players have to go out for new ones to come in. So Teddy could be an option.

Devan Dubnyk also draws in tonight, expectedly since this is a back-to-back.

The buzz today in the Oilogosphere is over some interview Linus Omark had. Read more here. I can’t see how the Oilers would want to hang on to Omark after those comments. I do wonder though if he’s just a guy that has no clue how to say the right things, or if he really just marches to the beat of his own drummer. Either way, I’m thinking he’ll likely be moved before July.

As for the actual game, I’ll be watching this one on the PVR (if it is deemed worthy) as tonight also happens to be the first playoff game for the Oil Kings. Tickets for these games are DIRT CHEAP, and it’s arguably the best hockey you’ll see in Rexall this year. Steve-O, Trogdor and I will be rooting the home team on at this one tonight. I’m pretty stoked, to be honest.

Enjoy the game, folks!

Tonight will be nearly the same line-up, as the Oilers face the Tampa Bay Lightning. The only difference will be in net, as Nikolai Khabibulin takes over duties. Devan Dubnyk has been pretty solid as of late, but the Oilers have a back-to-back game, as they play Florida tomorrow. So most assuredly, Dubnyk will start in tomorrow’s game.

Taylor Hall didn’t skate in today’s practice. “Bottom line it’s a concussion. He isn’t available to play tonight. I’m not sure if he’ll skate tomorrow but it’s day to day,” Renney stated on Hall.

Linus Omark will draw back in tonight, as Lennart Petrell is suffering from a groin injury and didn’t skate today.

Enjoy the game, folks!

Shane Doan Shanabanned for 3, Duncan Keith next up in the principal’s office..

Duncan Keith elbows Daniel Sedin in the chops. I won’t lie, I take a bit of sick pleasure in that.. but it will definitely result in a Shanabanning.

Also, Shane Doan got 3 games for this Elbow on Jamie Benn

That sets a bit of precedence for this Keith elbow.

Renney thinks:sigh...i gotta back up whatever this asshat says...

Renney: "sigh...i gotta back up whatever this asshat says..."

OK, So every so often we have a “Caption This!” post. Usually these are epic failures in the contributions we receive, but we hope they are still funny as hell to read with the stuff we come up with, at the very least.

Basically the idea is we throw up a picture, and you come up with some captions for it, or do something funny with the picture. Example, with the picture above.. give Renney and Tambellini some lines (i.e. what are they saying?), or draw something funny on the picture and repost it.

Here’s a few captions to help get things rolling.. feel free to contribute in the comments if you like: Continue reading 'Caption This! Steve Tambellini and Tom Renney'»
