TV: SNETW – after Leafs game

So tonight will be our first chance to watch Nick Schultz in action. However, it would appear (or so is the rumor) that we will have to miss part of this game thanks to the bitches at TSN buying up “exclusivity rights” to be the only peeps showing any hockey for the span of the Maple Leafs game. Do they really think I’m going to up their ratings by watching the Leafs game while my Oilers are on? I won’t be watching any of that game. I probably wouldn’t anyways, but all this does is piss me off, rather than convince me to watch one of their games. So, a big F You goes out to TSN for this, and to the NHL for actually allowing this. Sorry Toronto, but you are not the center of the universe, despite what TSN and much of CBC tell you. I can only hope that this is a misunderstanding, or TSN changes their way and allows Sportsnet to show the game in its entirety. But seeing as how Sportsnet says they will be joining the game in progress.. it seems our only hope hangs on TSN having a change of heart / wakes the f— up.

So.. on to the game. Usual suspects are scratched, plus Sutton in favor of Schultz. I’d prefer to see Barker out, but I can only assume that they’re doing their due diligence here to fully test that this turd can’t float before jettisoning him at the end of the year.

Doobie gets the start again.

EDIT: Game on!!! TSN has lifted the doucheban… we can now watch the game in its entirety. A half-hearted apology to TSN for throwing a fan-fit. I know I’m not the only one though.

Monday Morning Standings

By , February 28, 2012 9:28 am

See The Rum Diary. It's Hunter S. Thompson + her.

Time for another MMS, this one getting closer and closer to being on time. Crazy, I know.

Also, we have the 3rd quarter review coming up soon.

Oiler News

– Tom Gilbert got traded. I’m not a fan of the deal. Others are. I can’t agree with you guys cause then we’ll both be wrong.
– That said, I’m sure I’ll like Nick Schultz. Hopefully he’ll be a good guy for us for a few years.
– Hemsky got re-signed. Fuck yeah! Won’t lie, when I got Racki and Trogdor’s texts on Friday I was grinning the whole night. Now watch him tear it up the next two years and earn a killer contract.
– Smyth looks to be re-signed soon too. I’m not really worried about this as how bad can Tambellini fuck it up?

Well, the trade deadline came and went without too much action on the Oilers front, but a big trade was made today for us… Tom Gilbert to the Wild for defenseman Nick Schultz. The stats guys are criticizing this one. Looks like Schultz’s Corsi and such isn’t the hottest. To this I say, just watch the game. Much of what Schultz bring is what his supporters say are “intangibles”. The Wild players were upset to see him go, as was Michael Russo, beat writer for the Star Tribune. Sounds like this is a trade that could benefit both sides. Really, I just suggest everyone wait this one out before deciding. Corsi has made some bad D look brilliant, and some good D look not so brilliant. It doesn’t always tell the story, although I think stats can help at times.

Have your say on our poll on the sidebar.

Tom Gilbert Traded to the Wild for Nick Schultz

By , February 27, 2012 11:05 am

Oilers have just traded Tom Gilbert for Nick Schultz

Steve-O’s initial thoughts: Terrible trade. Absolutely terrible. Although I know nothing about Schultz.

Steve-O more rational thoughts 3 hours later: I still think we gave away a better D man. At best we broke even.

Racki’s info:
Here’s what I’ve been able to dig up about Nick Schultz:
Scouting Report

Has excellent speed, mobility and grit for the blue-line position. Plays with poise and is capable of logging a lot of minutes. Always gives his all and leads by example.

Lacks the physicality to truly dominate offensive forwards. Doesn’t play with a lot of confidence in the offensive zone at the NHL level.

Career Potential

Solid defensive defenseman.

He’s 6’1, 200 lbs and shoots left (sucks losing a righty in Gilbert.. especially one that excels at moving the puck) and 29 years old.

$3.5M cap hit until end of 2013-14, so the Oilers save $500k in salary.

This is what the experts are calling a “hockey trade”. Tom Gilbert returns to his home of Minnesota.

Schultz averaged 19:35 in TOI this year so far with the Wild, with what looks like 2nd line pairing on the PP and top pairing on the PK.

The Nuge makes his return to action tonight. Not sure on the lines yet, but I’m guessing they’ll want to keep the top two lines intact since they’ve been playing well and having success with them the last two games. Maybe even easing Nuge back into the lineup on the 3rd line would be good. Tom Renney will also return to the bench tonight.

If you live in a hole, you may have missed that Ales Hemsky re-signed last night. Some love the idea, some don’t. Count me as one of the people that loves the idea. It’s actually barely any different than his last contract (which just about everyone thought was a bargain), so I don’t see the big deal, even if Madonna doesn’t like it.
