Oilers. Jackets. Battle of two big losers again, if I can put on my Mike Cammalleri hat for a moment. The Oilers have a bad habit of disappearing against bottom feeders. Hopefully after the big 5-0 loss versus 29th place Anaheim (at least at the time), the Oilers will be motivated not to have a new asshole torn by their boss again.

Taylor Hall, Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky seem to have some magic going. Since the Nuge’s injury (which united the trio), Hall has had 4 goals, 1 assist in 6 games. Gagner has had 1 goals, 3 assists in that span. Hemsky has had 1 goal, 4 assists in that span. While those numbers aren’t superbly good, Hall has generated 27 shots, Gagner 12, and Hemsky 15 in that span. Hall is definitely giving his all to drag this team out of the depths of last place. Hemsky and Gagner have each played a pretty good game too. Between the three of them, they’ve accounted for about a third of this team’s shots in that 6 game span. I know I’d also recently in one of the games, 10 offensive chances were generated.. 6 by Hall, 4 by Hemsky. It’s obvious who is doing their part here… this team needs some other players to stand up though.

No word on lines, but I assume that Khabi will get this game tonight, since Dubnyk doesn’t seem to get consecutive games ever. He played pretty decently against the Kings though, so who knows.

Edit: Dubnyk does in fact start! No changes to the lineup at all.

The Rebuild Part 1: Introduction (by Zackman35)

The Rebuild Part 1: Introduction

Taylor Hall

“One, they’re probably going to beat you by eight goals and two, they’re going to kick that crap out of you too if you want to challenge them that way. “ – Steve Tambellini

Edmonton is a well educated hockey town and you don’t have to go very far to find out what state the Oilers are in, and for that matter what it is and what it means to be in a rebuild. What is a rebuild anyways? The dictionary defines it as:

    verb (used with object)
    1. to repair, especially to dismantle and reassemble with newparts: to rebuild an old car.
    2. to replace, restrengthen, or reinforce: to rebuild an army.
    3. to revise, reshape, or reorganize: to rebuild a shattered career.

Now of course there are varying degrees of rebuilds and every season every team in the league is sure to make at least one roster/on-ice movement which will hopefully improve or re-strengthen the on ice performance of their franchise. These degrees of “rebuilds” can vary, from more subtle movements/transactions (Detroit Red Wings) to full on scorched earth type rebuilds (Edmonton Oilers).

It is possible for teams to be successful, competing in the playoffs year after year, to still have the opportunity to rebuild their Continue reading 'The Rebuild Part 1: Introduction (by Zackman35)'»

So last game we saw Andrew Cogliano’s return… now we get to see Dustin Penner… however this isn’t his first game back to Edmonton. It is, however, his first game back since the pancake injury. If you saw the lady who was responsible for the delicious stack, you might not be so critical. I can also say that Dustin Penner’s “fat” is still in better shape than me.. so I’d never honestly be critical of the guy’s weight/shape. I just love a good laugh and glad he is taking it in stride and poking fun at himself.

Anyways, the Oilers are in a world of hurt right now, sliding down the standings… they’re running out of spots to slide down to. Currently, only the team that beat them 5-0 (Anaheim Ducks) and the Columbus Blue Jackets sit below them in the standings. The Ducks are just one point behind. Let’s be honest… when the season started, no one expected the Oilers would be near the top of the standings like they were… however this has been a monumental collapse to their season and is incredibly disappointing. There are cries for a few heads out in Oilersland from Renney to Tambellini. I’m not willing to give up on Renney, but the other fellow seems to be either still in the tear-it-down phase, or is horrible at reacting to troubled times here and plugging holes.

No word on the lineup just yet, so I’ll post the same as last game for now and modify it later.

Tonight is Andrew Cogliano’s first game back at Rexall Place as an Anaheim Duck. I liked him here, but you never know what fans will do when players return. Could be some boos in there… maybe the odd applause. But I’m betting for more of the former.

There aren’t many teams worse than the Oilers, but as luck would have it, the Ducks are one of them. That means the Oilers should play pretty awful tonight 😛 I’ll be rooting the team on live at the game tonight. Hopefully it’s a good one. The Ducks are only 3-10-6 on the road while the Oilers are 10-6-3, so it SHOULD be a good one for us. But you never know.

Nikolai Khabibulin gets the nod in net tonight. Josh Green was recalled and will play wing with Ben Eager and Ryan O’Marra (who is OK to play now, after being sick for the last game).

So, the Oilers are quite a broken bunch. So broken, that even one of their new callups is questionable for tonight. How’s that happen? That person in question is Ryan O’Marra, who is feeling under the weather. Milan Kytnar has been recalled from the ECHL. That statement alone is crazy, and I never thought I’d hear that. I figured Kytnar would disappear into the system never to be found again.. washing up in Europe at some point. But I’m glad he’s getting a shot, and hopefully he makes the best of it.

The Devils are coming off a 6-3 loss versus the Flames yesterday. Yes, back-to-back games for the Devils. If history serves, that will mean that they will be angry against the Oilers tonight and thump us. Exciting times! Johan Hedberg will get the start tonight.

Things are getting bleaker and bleaker for the Oilers, with the key injuries again, and us already sitting in a familiar spot in the standings. Oi. Sorry for the doom and gloom, folks, but I don’t see it getting any better any time soon.
